Reinventing National Identity In A World Of Globalized Soccer: The Case Of The Uruguayan National Team, Maia Cotelo May 2016

Reinventing National Identity In A World Of Globalized Soccer: The Case Of The Uruguayan National Team, Maia Cotelo

Honors Theses

Soccer played a central role in Uruguay’s national identity throughout the 20th century. The national team’s triumphs in the first half of the century were seen as proof that the small nation could perform on a world stage. The mutually reinforcing relationship between soccer success and national identity weakened after 1950 when the national team stopped winning and when it entered into profound crisis in the 1990s as Uruguayan star players began leaving the country to play in better leagues abroad. The national team no longer provided the country with glory and the players were no longer mirrors of Uruguayan …

The Theoretical Argument For Disproving Asymptotic Upper-Bounds On The Accuracy Of Part-Of-Speech Tagging Algorithms: Adopting A Linguistics, Rule-Based Approach, William Foley

Honors Theses

This paper takes a deep dive into a particular area of the interdisciplinary domain of Computational Linguistics, Part-of-Speech Tagging algorithms. The author relies primarily on scholarly Computer Science and Linguistics papers to describe previous approaches to this task and the often-hypothesized existence of the asymptotic accuracy rate of around 98%, by which this task is allegedly bound. However, after doing more research into why the accuracy of previous algorithms have behaved in this asymptotic manner, the author identifies valid and empirically-backed reasons why the accuracy of previous approaches do not necessarily reflect any sort of general asymptotic bound on the …

Eliminating Magnetic Forces From The Surface Tension Measurement Of Magnetic Surfactants, Emily Koehler Jan 2016

Eliminating Magnetic Forces From The Surface Tension Measurement Of Magnetic Surfactants, Emily Koehler

Honors Theses

Surfactants have many applications due to their ability to reduce the surface tension between two phases. Magnetic surfactants, a relatively new form of surfactants, offer the possibility of further controlling a surfactant system by using an external magnetic field to induce alignment on the molecular level. One method of studying a magnetic field's effect on the magnetic surfactant system involves analyzing the change in surface tension at varied solution concentrations both in and outside a magnetic field. The pendent drop method uses the downward gravitational force on a droplet suspended from a needle to find the surface tension based on …

Identification Of Inhibitors Of Fxii, Alexandra C. Bensel Jan 2016

Identification Of Inhibitors Of Fxii, Alexandra C. Bensel

Honors Theses

Hereditary angioedema is characterized by recurrent swelling of the extremities, larynx, and gastrointestinal tract. While type I and type II hereditary angioedema result from a C1-inhibitor deficiency, a new variant of the disease, type III hereditary angioedema, was recently discovered in individuals with functioning levels of the C1-inhibitor. Ongoing research has postulated that increased activity of factor XII is responsible for this new form of hereditary angioedema because it causes overproduction of bradykinin. The purpose of the experiment was to identify inhibitors of factor XII. One hundred and seventy six molecules were screened through a dose response using Human Factor …

Exogenous Barriers To The Incorporation Of The Second Generation North Africans In France, Amber Malone Jan 2016

Exogenous Barriers To The Incorporation Of The Second Generation North Africans In France, Amber Malone

Honors Theses

Immigration is a polemic subject in French society today. The 2005 riots in the banlieue and the government's response to the outraged and discontented immigrant populations brought forth a topic left out of public discourse for years before the heavily televised protests. At the forefront of this public debate surrounding identity and incorporation was one of France's largest immigrant populations, North Africans. Marginalization of a particular group often appears in the terms of social and cultural conflict. While this is true, incorporation of the culture of migrants and their representation in French society are not the only exogenous factors that …

Dillon's Rule Versus Home Rule: A Comprehensive, Comparative Review Of The Impacts, Joseph R. Latham Jan 2016

Dillon's Rule Versus Home Rule: A Comprehensive, Comparative Review Of The Impacts, Joseph R. Latham

Honors Theses

There are two primary configurations of the American state-local relationship. The status quo configuration, pure Dillon's Rule, is a top-down organizational structure in which the state, primarily through its legislature, exercises close-to-complete oversight over decision-making at the local level — in municipalities, counties, towns, etc. An alternative configuration may be brought about by the institution of home rule, a constitutionally or legislatively conferred devolution of powers to substate governments that allows, at least nominally, for greater autonomy at the local level. This study utilizes institutional theory and a systematic review of the current body of literature concerning the tangible impacts …

Hormonal And Social Factors Influencing Alternative Mating Tactic Decisions In Male Green Treefrogs, Hyla Cinerea, Brooks Pratt Jan 2016

Hormonal And Social Factors Influencing Alternative Mating Tactic Decisions In Male Green Treefrogs, Hyla Cinerea, Brooks Pratt

Honors Theses

In many anuran species (frogs and toads), males alternate between calling and a non-calling satellite mating tactic. Satellite males characteristically associate with calling males and attempt to intercept females that are attracted to the vocalizations of the calling host male. The prevailing hypothesis is that the decision to adopt a calling or satellite mating tactic is based on relative attractiveness — males are predicted to adopt a satellite mating tactic when the vocalizations of nearby males are more attractive than their own. In support of this hypothesis, previous studies have shown that satellite males can be induced to call by …

In this work, a portable low cost sensor system is designed for the extraction of walking signatures in humans using the principle of Ultrasonic Doppler Sonar (UDS). UDS involves the use of two ultrasonic transducers acting as a transmitter-receiver pair. The transmitter produces a continuous ultrasonic signal at a specific frequency to be broadcasted onto a moving target, while the receiver will perform a frequency shift on the reflected signal in relation to the movement of the target. The sensor system used in this work is comprised of a frequency generator that drives the transducer with a 40 kHz sine …

Economic Enchantment In Eudora Welty's A Curtain Of Green, Elizabeth Moore Jan 2016

Economic Enchantment In Eudora Welty's A Curtain Of Green, Elizabeth Moore

Honors Theses

This thesis analyzes Eudora Welty's short story collection, A Curtain of Green, and the interactions between its characters and the Mississippi economy. The paper takes into account Eudora Welty's work with the WPA during the Great Depression and her experiences photographing Mississippians throughout the state. Additionally, this thesis uses Welty's terminology when describing her experience of shopping as a child, specifically the enchantment of goods. This material is used to argue that Eudora Welty does address economic elements in her early short stories. Furthermore, this collection demonstrates a difference between gender participation in the economy, particularly among salesmen and female …
