Charecterizing Modern Russian Subversive Tactics In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Madeleine Dotson Dec 2023

Charecterizing Modern Russian Subversive Tactics In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Madeleine Dotson

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Although often overlooked, Bosnia and Herzegovina presents a relevant case study of how Russian subversive tactics, particularly disinformation campaigns, can influence domestic politics. Of the variety of subversive tactics used in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russia’s social media and disinformation campaigns have remained the most effective and reflect a broader, global trend. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, social media use increased worldwide. Thus, Russia took advantage of that rise in social media usage and the rise in far-right conspiracy theories to increase its foothold in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Russia has played on local concerns about EU ascension by questioning the EU’s true …

Walking The Line: Evaluating Saudi Arabia's Nuclear Actions And Looking To The Future, Sarah "Winn" Philpott Dec 2023

Walking The Line: Evaluating Saudi Arabia's Nuclear Actions And Looking To The Future, Sarah "Winn" Philpott

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Although it has been decades since the end of the Cold War, nuclear proliferation is an ever-pertinent matter for the international political system–one that concerns the security of each nation. Unfortunately, much international attention has turned away from nuclear concerns, despite multiple countries having the means and interests to pursue nuclear weapons. Saudi Arabia poses a particularly interesting threat of proliferation for a number of reasons, including: regional tensions with nuclear activity, existing nuclear infrastructure, and expressed interest in pursuing a nuclear weapons program. Like any country, Saudi Arabia’s pursuit of nuclear weapons would drastically change international dynamics. However, they …

At The Intersection Of Functionality And Beauty: A Study Of The Carrara Herbal, Anna Grace Robinson Dec 2023

At The Intersection Of Functionality And Beauty: A Study Of The Carrara Herbal, Anna Grace Robinson

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

The Carrara Herbal is a manuscript that sits at the cusp between medieval and early Renaissance work in Padua, Italy. With medical “simples,” or singular ingredients to be combined, as its primary focus, the Herbal is heavily illustrated and illuminated (the process of decorating a manuscript with color and even precious metals like gold), demonstrating the commissioner’s intentions and establishing him as a leader in the field of botanical medical knowledge. However, the intent and practical use seem to be at odds in the case of the Carrara Herbal. As six centuries passed, the manuscript was actively used and revised …

Laudato Si' And The Christian Ethic, Brandon Kriplean Dec 2023

Laudato Si' And The Christian Ethic, Brandon Kriplean

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Christianity, specifically Catholicism, is an inherently anthropocentric religion, with humans having the most dignity of all mortal creatures due to their divine image. However, what does such a lofty view of humanity mean for the current environmental crises? Are Christianity and environmental stewardship mutually exclusive paradigms? Pope Francis has sought to maintain human dignity while at the same time encouraging the Church to recognize that the environment, as God’s creation, is not to be exploited. In other words, an anthropocentric perspective does not equal a disregard for other aspects of creation. His 2015 landmark encyclical, Laudato Si’, sought to highlight …

Soul Food And Soul Searching: How The Relationship Between Food In Black Culture And Racialized Beauty Standards Can Lead To Disordered Eating Symptoms In Black Women, Sydni Davis Jun 2022

Soul Food And Soul Searching: How The Relationship Between Food In Black Culture And Racialized Beauty Standards Can Lead To Disordered Eating Symptoms In Black Women, Sydni Davis

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Food is an important part of Black culture, expression, and history, but it is often underrepresented in research on eating disorders. Previous research has shown that Black women experience eating disorders comparable to White women when measured using the Questionnaire for Eating Disorder Diagnoses. In light of this, I wanted to know the stories behind women that might exhibit eating disorder symptoms. I used oral histories gathered from three women in my family and autoethnography to amplify the voices of Black women. I found that of my small sample size, 50% felt that they had an unhealthy relationship with food …

Vengeance Is Mine How Religious Southern White Supremacy Shaped The Prison Industrial Complex, Kristen Davis Jun 2022

Vengeance Is Mine How Religious Southern White Supremacy Shaped The Prison Industrial Complex, Kristen Davis

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

White supremacy and the prison industrial complex have a long history of reinforcing one and other. Throughout this history Southern white religious groups have co-opted Christianity to inform their beliefs on crime and punishment. As a result, social, political, and economic efforts to maintain religious white supremacist ideals have bled into and shaped the criminal justice system. This research explores the evolution of these groups’ impact starting with American slavery and ending with the present day by assessing the strategic integration of Christianity, white supremacy, and the politics of crime. This chronological analysis reveals historical foundations as well as modern …

Save, Gamble, Or Both? The Relationship Between Premium Bond Sales And Lottery Sales In The United Kingdom, Kaden Seth Grace Jun 2022

Save, Gamble, Or Both? The Relationship Between Premium Bond Sales And Lottery Sales In The United Kingdom, Kaden Seth Grace

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Four out of every ten Americans are unable to pay for an unexpected $400 bill out of their savings accounts. To ameliorate this problem, one policy to incentivize saving is a Prize-Linked Savings Account (PLSA). Unlike a traditional savings account that pays out a consistent rate of return, a PLSA pools the interest on all deposits and distributes the returns in randomly drawn prizes (similar to a lottery). However, PLSAs remain illegal in many areas due to a concern that the introduction of a private or public PLSA could cannibalize revenue from an existing state-sponsored lottery, thus restricting the state’s …

How Much Further Can Southern Resilience Go?, Abbie-Noel Pittman Jun 2022

How Much Further Can Southern Resilience Go?, Abbie-Noel Pittman

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Climate change affects everyone. However, the Southeastern United States is at a higher risk of negative effects. The South is especially vulnerable to climate change not because mitigation will drain resources, but because those resources were never available in the first place. This paper describes the geographic disadvantages of the Southeastern United States and explains how prior institutional inequality will exacerbate those disadvantages for marginalized groups and communities. The South depends on agriculture and tourism economically, both of which are heavily climate dependent. For southerners who already lack resources, the destruction of two main job industries would be detrimental. This …

Closing The Gap: Documenting Black Women's Involvement In The Integration Of The University Of Mississippi, Brittany Ellis Jun 2022

Closing The Gap: Documenting Black Women's Involvement In The Integration Of The University Of Mississippi, Brittany Ellis

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper explores the lack of documentation around the first Black woman to racially integrate the University of Mississippi—Verna Ann Bailey—and the rest of her cohort of the first Black female graduating class of 1968. In doing so, I recount how Black women were consistently and directly involved in political activism and student protests at UM in the years from 1965-1970. The narrative of integration at UM is oftentimes viewed as a singular event that started and ended in 1963—not a fluid and long-lasting effort made possible by the sacrifices and determination of a long list of pioneers.

Burl Cain, Angola, And Parchman: The National Institution Of Slavery, Cameron Dougherty Jun 2022

Burl Cain, Angola, And Parchman: The National Institution Of Slavery, Cameron Dougherty

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Former warden of the Louisiana State Penitentiary and current commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Corrections Burl Cain’s career has drawn national attention for his supposed heraldry of penal reform. Having declared himself to be fulfilling a divinely mandated mission, Cain has frequently cited his criteria of a “good prison: good playing, good praying, good food and good medicine.”1 This article seeks to critically examine these criteria as they relate to Cain’s tenures in both Louisiana and Mississippi while answering the following question: what is the human impact of Burl Cain’s approach to wardency? Despite his focus on the provision …

Queer Politics In Pre And Post Independence Cameroon Through The Lens Of Weberian Political Authority, Logan Baggett Jun 2022

Queer Politics In Pre And Post Independence Cameroon Through The Lens Of Weberian Political Authority, Logan Baggett

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Policy in Cameroon, and on the African continent more generally, is often summarily referred to as the result of neopatrimonial authority. This paper rejects the framework of neopatrimonial authority in Cameroon, applying Weberian notions of charismatic authority to trace the development of queer policy from the pre-colonial period to the present. This paper first analyzes the impact of European colonialism on legal language and then investigates the rhetorical defense of this legal language following independence. Since statehood, the presidencies of Ahmadou Ahidjo (1960 - 1982) and Paul Biya (1982 - ) have implemented selective enforcement of inherited legalisms through near …

The Effect Of Music On The Memory Of Individuals With Alzheimer's Disease, Elizabeth Johns Jun 2022

The Effect Of Music On The Memory Of Individuals With Alzheimer's Disease, Elizabeth Johns

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative cognitive condition. Recent research has explored nonpharmaceutical treatments such as music therapy for those affected by this illness. This paper aims to consolidate current knowledge related to music therapy and aspects of memory (long-term, shortterm, and mnemonic) in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. This paper also highlights some shortcomings in current research, as there is much work to be done before music therapy can be used as a viable treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.

By Her Hands: An Analysis Of The Hidden Labor Of Black Women At The Hugh Craft House Site In Holly Springs, Mykayla Williamson

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

This project considers the gap in theorizing the hidden labor of Black women in the seldom-researched setting of urban slavery. The project unearths the hidden labor of Black women by analyzing architectural, primary, and secondary documentary evidence surrounding the urban antebellum Hugh Craft House site in Holly Springs, Mississippi. It draws on household and Black feminist archaeology theories to uncover the hidden labor in the domestic spheres that the enslaved women were actively shaping. Research methods included reviewing archival footage; site visits; examining primary sources; and consulting secondary sources on antebellum households, household archaeology, and Black feminist archaeology. This research …

Watering The Desert: Azraq, Public Opinion, And Environmental Post-Materialism, Wesley A. Gerard May 2019

Watering The Desert: Azraq, Public Opinion, And Environmental Post-Materialism, Wesley A. Gerard

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

This article focuses on physical, socioeconomic, and political changes in the community of Azraq, Jordan. Azraq, a small town in northeastern Jordan, sits atop a large aquifer that has been heavily pumped by the government for several decades in response to an increasing nationwide demand for water. This has led to large-scale transformations in not only the physical landscape surrounding the aquifer, but also in the daily lives, economic statuses, and political opinions of the people living there. My research thus fits the case of Azraq into larger academic discourse on groundwater governance, resource access, and environmentalism. I use a …

The Gender Differences In Perceived Obscenity Of Vulgar, Profane And Derogatory - Language Usage Among U.S. University Students, Jacqueline Knirnschild

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

With the Access Hollywood video of Donald Trump and the “This Pussy Fights Back” response by women, societal standards toward gender-specific language and appropriate conversation topics have become center-stage in our society. The concept that “boys will be boys” normalize vulgar conversations between men, whereas women who “swear like sailors” are seen by society as unprofessional, to have bad manners, limited vocabulary and to be seeking attention or “trying to be like one of the boys”. Such stigmas, although aim to make the perspectives of so-called “unladylike” women obsolete and invisible, may actually end up doing the complete opposite by …

How Moisture Content Levels And Packing Density In Soil Affect Crude Oil Spreads, Shaylin N. Williams May 2019

How Moisture Content Levels And Packing Density In Soil Affect Crude Oil Spreads, Shaylin N. Williams

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Crude oil spills are one of the most destructive disasters that can occur, and they are extremely difficult to recover from. Many studies focus on what can be done to clean these crude oil spills, but more research should be focused on means of prevention. Currently, very little is known about how the moisture content levels and the packing efficiency of soil can affect an oil spill. These two factors alone can offer a variety of information to environmental agencies, manufacturers, and refineries. Through utilization of a chemical engineering lab, a recording mechanism, and ImagePro software, data was collected and …

Elemental Analysis Of Edible Clay From The Copperbelt Province Of Zambia, Amelia M. Craze, Mina L. Brandon

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Trace elements in three edible clay samples from an open-air market in Kitwe, Zambia were analyzed for heavy metals using a scanning electron microscope coupled with an energy-dispersive spectrometer. The ingestion of clays has been observed throughout history but persists in many rural countries that lack sufficient access to proper medical care. In many African countries, women have been observed eating clay during pregnancy to reduce nausea or meet their recommended intake of iron. Similar studies identified harmful heavy metals in the makeup of the edible clays, however, the results of this analysis elemental analysis coupled with the SEM for …

Syrian Crisis Representation In The Media: The Cnn Effect, Framing, And Tone, Savannah S. Day

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Over the past seven years of the Syrian Civil War, Syrian refugees have been painted in a negative light by news media outlets around the world. History of media coverage regarding global humanitarian crises shows that with various tools and processes, media can shape public opinion and policy in whichever direction it desires, and oftentimes policymakers and the public are quick, as well as emotional, to react. In this paper, my objectives are to analyze specific examples of this CNN Effect phenomena within news coverage of the Syrian refugee crisis, as well as generally explain the negatively correlating relationship between …

The Case For Contraceptives: The Legislative History Of The Aca’S Birth Control Mandate, Julia Grant May 2019

The Case For Contraceptives: The Legislative History Of The Aca’S Birth Control Mandate, Julia Grant

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper seeks to outline the legislative and judicial history of the Affordable Care Act’s contraception coverage mandate. It begins by explaining the justifications and specifications of the provision. It then highlights the three phases of litigation that have surrounded the mandate: closely held, for-profit companies; religious nonprofit organizations; and state attorney generals. This paper provides context for the litigation by describing the opposing stances towards the mandate of the Obama and Trump Administrations and the different modifications to the provision made under each administration. In the wake of last week’s finalization of the controversial rules the Trump Administration issued, …
