A Floristic Study And Grouse Production In The Mille Lacs Wildlife Area, Michael J. Scanlan Jan 1972

A Floristic Study And Grouse Production In The Mille Lacs Wildlife Area, Michael J. Scanlan

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The upland vegetation in four stands was analyzed for differences in conditions important for ruffed grouse production. The structure of the control stand suggests that Acer saccharum and other shade-tolerant tree species will replace the dominants Quercus borealis and Populus tremuloides. The Acer saccharum would not be useful to grouse. In an adjacent stand in which forest litter had been burned, there was a tremendous amount of reproduction of trembling aspen and much less sugar maple reproduction, compared with the control stand. Differences in the understory beneficial to grouse also were found.

Influence Of Soil Acidity On The Occurrence Of Athiorhodaceae, Eville Gorham, Douglas C. Pratt Jan 1972

Influence Of Soil Acidity On The Occurrence Of Athiorhodaceae, Eville Gorham, Douglas C. Pratt

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Enrichment cultures from strongly acid Sphagnum bog peats and moderately acid to circumneutral fen peats revealed Athiorhodaceae to be present in almost all suitably wet samples above pH 5.3 and absent from almost all samples below pH 4.7. These bacteria were recorded in only one of fifty cultures from acid humus layers in a jack pine forest, and in none of thirty cultures from moderately acid humus layers in a mixed woodland. They were also absent from old-field surface soils, which often contained considerable amounts of organic litter.

Mouth Brooding Behavior In The Substrate Spawning Cichlid, Tilapia Sparrmani, Hollie L. Collins Jan 1972

Mouth Brooding Behavior In The Substrate Spawning Cichlid, Tilapia Sparrmani, Hollie L. Collins

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Tilapia sparrmani has long been considered a substrate spawning fish but a considerable number of oral brooding tactics hove been observed. Two "experiments" where foreign species young were nurtured orally suggest rather strong oral brooding tendencies for this species.

Toward An Energy Policy, Dean E. Abrahamson Jan 1972

Toward An Energy Policy, Dean E. Abrahamson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The lack of a national policy on fuels and energy at a time of concern about the future supply and demand for energy and the environmental effects of creating energy is examined. Alternatives to present practices in generating and utilizing power are considered along with suggestions for measuring the "energy cost" of technological progress.

Blood Chemistry Values For Some Fishes Of The Upper Mississippi River, Joseph B. Hunn Jan 1972

Blood Chemistry Values For Some Fishes Of The Upper Mississippi River, Joseph B. Hunn

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Plasma concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, inorganic phosphate, glucose, lactic acid and total carbon dioxide and whole blood pH and hematocrit were determined for nine species of fish from the Upper Mississippi River area. Most of the values obtained fall within the range of values published for other freshwater fishes, except that the plasma concentrations of potassium and chloride in sexually mature walleye pike were low. The chloride was compensated for by a high plasma total carbon dioxide. Further studies should establish whether these blood chemistry values may be considered of normal range. counties.

Scirpus Validus And S. Acutus: A Question Of Distinctness, Marlyn Miller, E. O. Beal Jan 1972

Scirpus Validus And S. Acutus: A Question Of Distinctness, Marlyn Miller, E. O. Beal

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

An analysis of 32 populations of bulrushes in the Scirpus validus-acutus complex growing in Itasca State Park and prairie ponds to the west indicates that most of the populations are referable to neither S. validus nor S. acutus but, rather, are intermediate in morphology. Further, the supposedly characteristic features by which the two nomenclatural species have been identified are erratically correlated.

A Computer Analysis Of Relationships Between Orders Of Chrysophyta, David P. Olds Jan 1972

A Computer Analysis Of Relationships Between Orders Of Chrysophyta, David P. Olds

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The division Chrysophyta has previously been formulated to include three diverse groups. A computer analysis was made of the individual orders within the division to determine the "naturalness" of this grouping and also to show how computer techniques may be used for this purpose. The computer methods are described, and a possible system of classification of the division based on the computer analysis is presented.

Described is a first course in education at the University of Minnesota for prospective science teachers which combines educational psychology, science content and micro-leaching experiences. The methods used and logistical problems related to such a course also are described. Students in the course kept daily logs of their reactions lo curricular materials, teaching techniques, and the micro-teaching experience to provide positive feedback to the instructors. In an examination covering the psychology aspects, all students in the combined course scored above the median for students from other sections. This experimental course has been adopted as the pattern for all science education …

Size-Structure Correlation In Developing Roots Of Cissus And Syngonium, David L. Berquam Jan 1972

Size-Structure Correlation In Developing Roots Of Cissus And Syngonium, David L. Berquam

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The development of conducting tissues in relation to root size is examined in Cissus sicyoides L. and Syngonium podophyllum Engl. Evidence is presented that such relationships arise earlier in development than has hitherto been described. Their early appearance calls into question the hypothesis that such relationships reflect a solution to problems of water economy in mature tissues. While pattern determination in Syngonium is similar to that anticipated on the basis of published investigations, a new 'kind of size-structure correlation is identified in Cissus. In light of this fact, a need to broaden the philosophical bases for an interpretation of form …

Pine Reproduction In Itasca State Park: Analysis In Moisture-Nutrient Coordinates, Vilis Kurmis, Henry L. Hansen Jan 1972

Pine Reproduction In Itasca State Park: Analysis In Moisture-Nutrient Coordinates, Vilis Kurmis, Henry L. Hansen

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Natural pine reproduction was studied in 36 forest communities representing the range of ecological variability of the upland forest in Itasca Park, Minnesota. The method of synecological coordinates was used to evaluate reproduction in relation to stand and site conditions. In the absence of fire, predominantly medium to nutrient-rich forest soils favor the growth of herbs, shrubs, and hardwoods under the open canopies of pine and aspen stands. There are very few red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) seedlings under these conditions, and growth of white pine (Pinus strobus L.) seedlings is severely restricted.

Handling And Distribution Considerations In World Grain Food Supply, Richard W. Fulmer Jan 1972

Handling And Distribution Considerations In World Grain Food Supply, Richard W. Fulmer

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This paper, which was presented at the 64th annual meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers November 29, 1971, examines the magnitude of loss of basic food groins due to inadequate, non-existent, or inefficient storage and distribution systems. The apparent shortage of nutritional commodities in a hungry world is called needless; and the significance of organized marketing in helping to reduce losses is emphasized.

Aquatic Stages Of Stratiomys Normula Unilimbata Loew. (Diptera: Stratiomyiidae), Blanchard O. Krogstad Jan 1972

Aquatic Stages Of Stratiomys Normula Unilimbata Loew. (Diptera: Stratiomyiidae), Blanchard O. Krogstad

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A study of the life cycle and behavior of the Stratiomys normula unilimbata Loew. in a pond in Itasca State Pork, Minnesota, showed that larvae overwinter in the bottom of the shallow pond and emerge in July. Some of the mortality factors are suggested, including the ichneumonid parasite, Ceratophygadeuon sp., reared from the larva and drowning of the pupa following a sudden increase in water level. Drastic reduction of the water level would also result in larval mortality.

Migration And Mortality Of Banded Mourning Doves, Lawrence L. Thomforde Jan 1972

Migration And Mortality Of Banded Mourning Doves, Lawrence L. Thomforde

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Banding data gathered over a three-year period at Savage, Minnesota, were analyzed to determine migration patterns and mortality rates of 2,218 mourning doves. The age ratio among trapped doves was 1.19 immatures per 1 adult and the sex ratio 3.84 males per 1 female. The weighted mean annual mortality rate for immature doves was 58.5 percent. For adult doves, the weighted annual mortality was 28.2 percent. The total weighted recovery rate was 1.24 immatures to 1 adult. The data show that immatures are 75 percent more vulnerable than adults to being shot; although no difference was found in direct recovery …

A Finnish Riihi In Minnesota, Matti Kaups Jan 1972

A Finnish Riihi In Minnesota, Matti Kaups

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A Finnish riihi in Minnesota is described and analyzed from the perspectives of form and function. The riihi or the combination grain drying, threshing, and winnowing barn, is one of the several folk architectural forms that immigrants from rural Finland built and used in settling sections of Minnesota. Since most of the log structures erected by the Finns are in a state of decay or already have vanished, it seems pertinent to preserve examples of the transplanted folk heritage in writing, and hopefully, in material form as well.
