Refugee Women And Employment: A Grounded Theory Study, Miryam Haarlammert Apr 2019

Refugee Women And Employment: A Grounded Theory Study, Miryam Haarlammert

Open Access Dissertations

This grounded theory project focused on developing an initial understanding about the experiences of refugee women who are currently or who have in the past received employment services when making employment decisions once resettled in the United States. Interviews with 11 refugee women from Latin American countries living in Miami, Florida and one refugee resettlement service provider revealed that before women engaged in formal job-seeking activities that they were already “doing the work” of learning how to live life in a new country while taking care of themselves and of their families. The women focused on finding housing, dealing with …

Wildlife Policy And Conservation: An Interdisciplinary Historical Perspective, Catherine C. Macdonald Dec 2017

Wildlife Policy And Conservation: An Interdisciplinary Historical Perspective, Catherine C. Macdonald

Open Access Dissertations

It is widely recognized that historical data about human interactions with the natural world is critical to understanding anthropogenic environmental change over time (McNeill, 2001). However, the potential contribution of interdisciplinary historical perspectives to wildlife conservation problems remains largely unexplored. Human-wildlife interactions are informed by a variety of factors, including the scientific and ecological literacy of human populations, human values, the availability of habitat and resources for human and animal populations, and the types of resource conflicts taking place (or likely to take place) (Treves et al., 2006). The role of historical interactions in shaping present attitudes and conflicts can …

Compliance With An Evidence-Based Policy For Improving Youth Mental Health Services, Vanesa A. Ringle Aug 2016

Compliance With An Evidence-Based Policy For Improving Youth Mental Health Services, Vanesa A. Ringle

Open Access Theses

Little is known about rates and patterns of compliance with state policies aimed at improving the quality of mental health services youth receive in community settings. Under the policy, clinics were allowed to override the recommended service package, in recognition that following the practice guidelines would not always be feasible. To examine the implications of these overrides, medical records were extracted for 727 child and adolescent clients who received mental health treatment at one of 4 …

Farming In The Commons, Fishing In The Congress, And U.S. Aquaculture In The 21st Century, Aaron Welch Aug 2015

Farming In The Commons, Fishing In The Congress, And U.S. Aquaculture In The 21st Century, Aaron Welch

Open Access Dissertations

Fisheries and aquaculture policy in the United States exhibits a peculiar duality. Commercial fishing is functionally open-access, heavily subsidized, and regulated by a federal bureaucracy staffed in part by fishing industry representatives. Marine aquaculture, in contrast, is effectively forbidden. Today there are no functioning fish farms anywhere in the federal waters of the United States, largely due to a regulatory environment that discourages applications for aquaculture permits. This bifurcated policy does not seem to be dependent on any specific environmental or economic rationale. Instead, this policy appears to be the product of a series of individual assumptions and policy choices …
