Couple-Based Stress Management Intervention And Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Cfs) Biopsychological Processes, Sara F. Milrad Apr 2018

Couple-Based Stress Management Intervention And Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Cfs) Biopsychological Processes, Sara F. Milrad

Open Access Dissertations

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a debilitating illness that is characterized by heterogeneous, systemic symptoms that impact patients’ and their caregiving partners’ quality of life. Extant literature has found hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and neuroimmune biomarkers associated with the disorder, but the impact of relationship satisfaction and patients’ communication satisfaction about symptoms on these CFS-relevant biological markers and on CFS patients’ CFS symptom severity has not been examined. Like others suffering from incapacitating chronic illnesses, CFS patients are often homebound, on disability, and/or face unemployment; however, people suffering from CFS report significantly less social support and more stigma from society, as …

Relationship Between Disengagement Coping During Primary Treatment For Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer And Long-Term Depressive Symptoms: The Role Of Pain And Fatigue Interference, Hannah M. Fisher Aug 2017

Relationship Between Disengagement Coping During Primary Treatment For Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer And Long-Term Depressive Symptoms: The Role Of Pain And Fatigue Interference, Hannah M. Fisher

Open Access Theses

Breast cancer survivors experience significant symptom burden during active treatment and survivorship. Psychosocial factors, such as coping, may influence the course of treatment-related physical and psychological symptomatology. Disengagement coping in particular, may be relevant to breast cancer survivors’ symptom experience. Yet, classification of individual coping responses to comprise a higher order category of disengagement coping remains ambiguous, and research investigating the role of disengagement coping on the trajectory of physical and psychological symptoms in breast cancer survivors has yielded inconsistent findings. This study aimed to test a mediation model elucidating the longitudinal relationship between a latent construct of disengagement coping …

Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (Frcm) Composites As A Repair System For Transportation Infrastructure, Vanessa A. Pino Aug 2016

Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (Frcm) Composites As A Repair System For Transportation Infrastructure, Vanessa A. Pino

Open Access Dissertations

The use of composite materials in the strengthening, rehabilitation, and repair industry has been gaining popularity due to their ability to promote the safety and sustainability of civil infrastructure. Fabric reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) systems have recently emerged as a viable repair alternative for restoring the integrity of damaged or structurally deficient reinforced concrete (RC) short of replacing it. The success of FRCM has been driven by its proven structural performance, inherent heat resistance and excellent compatibility with the concrete substrate. Due to the novelty of FRCM technology, the full potential of FRCM has yet to be experimentally validated and …

Effects Of Telephone-Delivered Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management Intervention On Fatigue Interference And Neuroimmune Function In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Daniel Lee Hall Aug 2016

Effects Of Telephone-Delivered Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management Intervention On Fatigue Interference And Neuroimmune Function In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Daniel Lee Hall

Open Access Dissertations

The perceived impact of chronic fatigue on daily living (i.e., fatigue interference) is particularly relevant for patients diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME), a medically unexplained illness associated with neuroendocrine and immune abnormalities. Literature suggests that fatigue interference is higher among women with CFS/ME than with other women facing chronic fatigue concerns, such as cancer survivors. To date, these comparisons have been primarily qualitative, limiting the ability to statistically control for related factors such as fatigue severity. Furthermore, greater fatigue interference in CFS/ME may relate to a suppressed cortisol awakening response (CAR) and heightened levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine …

Unified Cohesive Zone Model For Damage Modeling Due To Cyclic Loading, Derek G. Schesser May 2015

Unified Cohesive Zone Model For Damage Modeling Due To Cyclic Loading, Derek G. Schesser

Open Access Dissertations

In this dissertation a non-Paris law based unified fatigue cohesive zone model (CZM) capable of predicting both fatigue crack initiation and propagation of delamination cracks in composites with or without starter cracks or stress concentrators has been formulated and validated. The fatigue CZM incorporates normal and shear degradation mechanisms for pre-crack-initiation strength degradation, and simple power-laws for post-crack-initiation fatigue damage accumulation with damage rates computed directly from the in situ cohesive traction-separation history. A unique procedure to determine the in situ loading profiles and an efficient cycle jump strategy have also been developed. It has been demonstrated, through direct comparisons …

Benefits Of Physical Activity On Depression And Functional Quality Of Life During Treatment For Breast Cancer: Psychosocial Mechanisms., Jamie M. Stagl Aug 2011

Benefits Of Physical Activity On Depression And Functional Quality Of Life During Treatment For Breast Cancer: Psychosocial Mechanisms., Jamie M. Stagl

Open Access Theses

Women who are post surgery for breast cancer (BCa) experience distressing side effects that negatively influence Quality of Life (QoL). Physical activity (PA) following a BCa diagnosis is associated with decreased mortality, reduced recurrence, increased functional capacity, less fatigue, and may improve depression and QoL. Furthermore, evidence suggests that a combined PA and psychotherapy intervention may reduce physically and emotionally distressing side effects associated with diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of the study is to examine relationships among PA, fatigue, clinician-rated depression, depressed mood, and QoL in women after undergoing surgery for BCa and to assess the continuity of these …
