Validation Of The Social Communication Questionnaire (Scq) In A Hispanic Sample: Understanding The Impact Of Expressed Emotion, Vanessa Gonzalez Apr 2008

Validation Of The Social Communication Questionnaire (Scq) In A Hispanic Sample: Understanding The Impact Of Expressed Emotion, Vanessa Gonzalez

Open Access Dissertations

The SCQ is a popular screener for ASDs derived from the gold-standard diagnostic interview. This study examined the validity of the SCQ in a Hispanic sample. Additionally, the mother's expressed emotion toward her child with ASD was examined. Participants included 217 Hispanic and non-Hispanic white mothers of children with and without ASDs ages 4-10. The actual diagnostic status of all children was determined using a historical review of records. ROC curve analysis yielded much lower sensitivity and specificity than the original validation study, with very little difference found between the 15 and 22 cutoffs. A cutoff score of 12 performed …

Face Processing: The N170 Erp Component In Autism, Camilla M. Hileman Jan 2008

Face Processing: The N170 Erp Component In Autism, Camilla M. Hileman

Open Access Theses

Face processing deficits appear early in autism and greatly impact subsequent development. In this paper, the N170 component, an event-related brain potential sensitive to face processing, is examined in children with autism and typical development. The N170 amplitude was sensitive to group differences, as children with typical development showed greater differentiation to upright vs. inverted stimuli and faces vs. vehicles than children with autism. The N170 was also delayed in children with autism. The N170 was not a sensitive marker of individual differences in social behavior and autistic symptomology, but the proceeding positive peak, the P1, was a sensitive marker …

Attention In The Infant Siblings Of Children With An Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lisa Victoria Ibanez Jan 2008

Attention In The Infant Siblings Of Children With An Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lisa Victoria Ibanez

Open Access Theses

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are impaired in visually disengaging attention in both social and non-social contexts, impairments that may, in subtler form, also affect the infant siblings of children with an ASD (ASD-sibs). I investigated patterns of visual attention (gazing) in six-month-old ASD-sibs (n = 17) and the siblings of typically developing children (COMP-sibs; n =17) during the Face-to-Face/Still-Face Protocol (FFSF). Also, I examined joint attention through the Early Social Communication Scales (ESCS) when ASD-sibs and COMP-sibs were eight months of age. The relationship between gazing and later joint attention was examined. Throughout the FFSF protocol, ASD-sibs shifted …
