Factors Associated With Urban High School Graduation Rates In Tennessee, Keith Hembree

This study aimed to investigate the relationships, if any, between Ready to Graduate indicator, average ACT scores, chronic absenteeism rates, and school counselor to student ratios in Tennessee's four urban counties surrounding Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville, Tennessee. Only eight of Tennessee's 95 counties have a population that is at least 75% urban, according to the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations 2016 Report. The existence of segregated schools inside urban regions and the opportunity gap suggests that more research and data about Tennessee's urban communities are needed, especially in relation to graduation rates. Research has shown that social determinants of health, healthcare disparities, and historical trauma have contributed to inferior health outcomes for minority groups in the United States compared to their white counterparts. This qualitative research explores how healthcare providers perceive their own unconscious or implicit biases, which could potentially impact patient treatment outcomes. Bias is defined as a lack of objectivity combined with a preference for a particular person, group, or item. Data were collected using a multidisciplinary sample of healthcare treatment providers who participated in semi-structured individual interviews with the researcher. An estimated 2.3 million people are currently incarcerated in the United States (Sawyer and Wagner, 2020). As a result, mass incarceration has created job opportunities managing and overseeing facilities that house justice involved individuals. Given the high prevalence of aggressive and violent behavior, exposure to trauma is inevitable in correctional settings. In addition to traumatic exposure and response symptoms, correctional security staff report experiencing job-related burnout at high rates, resulting in quick turnover. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has generated significant interest due to its potential to augment human intelligence. However, user attitudes towards AI are diverse, with some individuals embracing it enthusiastically while others harbor concerns and actively avoid its use. This two essays' dissertation explores the reasons behind user aversion to AI. In the first essay, I develop a concise research model to explain users' AI aversion based on the theory of effective use and the adaptive structuration theory. Managing pain is a demanding task among elderly people as almost one third of them are experiencing chronic pain. Opioids are commonly prescribed to relieve pain symptoms, but there were no significant benefits compared with non-opioid medications. Guidelines from government agencies have dramatically changed the practice of opioid prescriptions in the community. However, for some legitimate reasons, many elderly people still need opioid medications to manage their pain. In American society, the African American male population is often misinterpreted and misunderstood. The media has played a pivotal role in creating, as well as maintaining, negative and unbalanced perceptions of African American males. Dropping out of school is often viewed as a self-sabotaging event at any age or grade level. From afar, dropping out of school looks as if the decision was impulsive and unintentional. However, for students, the action of dropping out is not a casual decision. This study examines how power and discourse affect the schooling experience of Black students. Using Foucauldian Discourse Analysis this study seeks to highlight how students reclaim their agency by leaning on the historical knowledge of the Black community and its rich moments of resistance. Justice-involved persons, especially people of color and those convicted of a sexual offense, experience bias and other barriers when seeking employment. However, there is no research on the synergistic effects of race and sexual criminal offense on employment-related outcomes. This study examined whether a hypothetical job applicant’s race (Black vs. White) and/or sexual criminal offense history (sexual, non-sexual, or no history) impacted hiring decisions and related employment-related outcomes among 476 volunteers recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk.
