Relations Between Veterans' Coping Strategies And Symptoms Of Ptsd And Depression, Nichole Noel Mazzulo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mental health problems, especially posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression are significant concerns for veterans. Coping strategies may compound or alleviate mental health problems. Prior research shows maladaptive coping strategies are used by people with more severe PTSD and depression, while adaptive strategies are used by people who are more resilient. This study investigated how coping strategies contribute to symptoms of PTSD and depression in two samples of veterans: 55 veterans recruited from a Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) (12 women, 43 men; Mage = 36.58; 43.6% White, 45.5% Black), 71 student veterans enrolled at a university (22 women, 49 …

Spirituality As A Predictor Of Guilt And Shame Among Lesbian And Gay Adults, Jonie Yvette Snipes Oliver Jul 2016

Spirituality As A Predictor Of Guilt And Shame Among Lesbian And Gay Adults, Jonie Yvette Snipes Oliver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship among constructs related to spirituality (religious/spiritual practice, religious/spiritual belief, sense of purpose/connection, and sense of hope/control) and reported degree of likelihood to feel guilt and shame among individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer. If clear relationships can be identified between the components of spirituality that predict lower levels of proneness to feel guilt and shame, counselors can use this information to provide interventions to clients who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer. Furthermore, the current study attempted to identify relationships that counselor educators can use when training students …

Protective Factors In The Relationship Between Urgency And Bulimic Behavior, Eugenia Suzanne Hatchett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Negative urgency, a trait marked by the tendency to react impulsively when experiencing negative affect, has recently been identified as a risk factor for bulimia. Although multiple studies have established a link between urgency and bulimia, few studies have focused on factors that might moderate this relationship. The purpose of the current study was to examine the ability of problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping, social support, and self-efficacy for regulating negative affect (SERN) to moderate the relationship between negative urgency and bulimic behavior. Web-based assessments of negative urgency, bulimic symptoms, coping, social support, and SERN were completed by 280 female college …

The Relation Between Resilience And Coping Style In An Active-Duty Navy Sample, Dennis Mcelyea

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Amidst the efforts to understand the impact of occupational stress on military personnel, researchers have turned their attention to resilience. In a sample of active-duty Navy personnel, positive and negative coping strategies were explored as predictors of two resilience dichotomies (resilient vs. non-resilient).Positive coping strategies were expected to predict resilience, and negative coping strategies were expected to predict non-resilience.The results from two hierarchical binary logistic regression analyses demonstrated that seeking command support, praying/meditating, and arguing demonstrated statistically significant associations with resilience that were consistent with the hypotheses. Other coping strategies of interest, however, failed to demonstrate statistically significant associations with …

The Effects Of Personal Grief On Organizational Outcomes: A Qualitative Investigation, Charlotte Ann Davis Nov 2012

The Effects Of Personal Grief On Organizational Outcomes: A Qualitative Investigation, Charlotte Ann Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Most individuals experience considerable emotional pain and grief due to the death of someone near and dear to them in their lifetimes. These painful experiences have the potential to affect individually-valued and organizationally-valued outcomes. In most organizations, employees are provided with a very limited amount of time for coping with the grieving process before they are expected to perform the normal duties and responsibilities associated with their work roles. Even though we know that the process of grief associated with the loss of a loved one can have traumatic consequences for the employee, there is little in the research literature, …

Coping And Drinking Motives In A Veteran Sample, Jordan A. Fields Dec 2010

Coping And Drinking Motives In A Veteran Sample, Jordan A. Fields

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

PTSD is highly comorbid with alcohol abuse and veterans appear to be a population at high risk for developing these problems. Maladaptive coping behaviors have been linked to the development of PTSD and alcohol abuse. Additionally, understanding more about the way one copes and why they report consuming alcohol may be important to understanding this relationship. This study examined coping style and drinking motives as mediators of PTSD-AUD (Alcohol Use Disorder) problems in 60 Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans. PTSD did not predict alcohol consumption variables. The PTSD group scored higher on drinking consequences, and drinking to cope. The …
