Social Media Interaction And Self-Perception In Adolescents And Young Adults With Cancer, Sarah Daniels Jan 2021

Social Media Interaction And Self-Perception In Adolescents And Young Adults With Cancer, Sarah Daniels

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The unique psychosocial needs of adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer are often overlooked or left unmet during treatment (Zebrack, 2011). Self-development is an important task for all AYA, and it is often informed by social interaction (Goffman, 1959). Given that social interaction among AYA occurs in offline and online spaces, the role of social interaction on social media for self-development is curious (Calvin, 2020). But examining this relationship also requires thoughtful attention by researchers to adequately describe the population being studied (Davis et al., 2020). As such, this exploratory sequential mixed methods research study sought to address the …

Essays On Health, Labor And Public Economics, Ahmad Reshad Osmani Jan 2019

Essays On Health, Labor And Public Economics, Ahmad Reshad Osmani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This Dissertation consists of three essays on health, labor, and public economics. The first essay investigates how gender-specific cancers affect the labor market outcomes of cancer survivors. Using a theoretical construct of labor supply and health capital, this essay exploits a nationally representative dataset, the 20082015 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), for estimating the correlated random effects (CRE) and over-dispersion empirical models to capture the job market effects for cancer survivors. After addressing the potential endogeneity of cancer and controlling for the number of years after cancer diagnoses, the estimated CRE model detect substantial male-female differences in the labor market …

Implications Of Functional Limitations In Older Cancer Survivors A Medicare Beneficiary Survey, Prachi Chavan Jan 2019

Implications Of Functional Limitations In Older Cancer Survivors A Medicare Beneficiary Survey, Prachi Chavan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate the impact of physical and functional limitations among older cancer survivors and its effect on healthcare utilization and mortality among them. The Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) is nationally representative longitudinal study of older Medicare beneficiaries. Physical Limitations (PL), Activities of Daily Living (ADL), and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) were measured on a five-point scale. MCBS data from 2005 to 2013 were used in this study. Propensity score weighting was developed using logistic regressions. Design-based descriptive analysis and logistic models with adjusted survey weights were performed. Logistic and Poisson regression …

Effective Disorder Strength And Fractal Dimension Of Biologically Relevant Systems, Ethan Ross Avery Jan 2018

Effective Disorder Strength And Fractal Dimension Of Biologically Relevant Systems, Ethan Ross Avery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, therefore, in order to properly relate the competition between fractal dimension of a system to its optical scattering properties, and to find the fractal dimension for which maximum scattering occurs, we have performed a systematic characterization of the disorder properties of fractal biological samples with a wide range of fractal dimensions. As cells/tissues are dielectric media, we have indirectly characterize the effective disorder of the fractal media based on their eigenvalues/eigenfunction in a closed-boundary condition using optical waves. We observed a non-monotonous behavior due to the competition between decreases in fractality verses increasing scattering centers.

Nanotechnology-Based Cancer Phototherapy And Circulating Tumor Cell Analysis, Ryan Timothy O'Connor Jan 2018

Nanotechnology-Based Cancer Phototherapy And Circulating Tumor Cell Analysis, Ryan Timothy O'Connor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gold and hybrid gold nanotechnology are uniquely poised to improve the fields of cancer diagnosis and therapy. Modifying gold nanoparticles with biological proteins has been widely used for decades, however, the common carbodiimide technique requires steps that reduce sensitivity and effectiveness in some spectroscopic techniques. We have developed an antibody conjugation protocol which conducts linking first, and then covalently adheres the antibody-linker complex to the nanoparticle surface. The linking polymer N-hydroxysuccinimide-polyethylene glycol-thiol (NHS-PEG-SH) was incubated with a protein overnight and purified by centrifuge filtration before modifying the surface of gold nanoparticles by slow mixing. The method was transferred to antibody …

Characteristics Of Smoking Oncology Patients In A Community Cancer Center: A Study Of Individual Differences, Amy Susan Farrell Jan 2018

Characteristics Of Smoking Oncology Patients In A Community Cancer Center: A Study Of Individual Differences, Amy Susan Farrell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cigarette smoking can seriously impede cancer treatment and leads to poorer treatment response. Fortunately, even when patients have cancer, smoking cessation has significant benefits. However, there have not been many successful well-controlled studies assessing smoking cessation interventions in oncology settings. The present study aimed to expand upon the current literature by exploring sample characteristics and individual differences in this understudied population. Data were collected from 649 adult participants at a mid-South community-based cancer center. Three measures were developed and subjected to factor analysis to assess level of health literacy, perceived stigma, and oncology-related triggers in this sample. These variables were …

Deconstructing The Diagnosis: Making The Case For A New Discourse On Childhood Cancer, Jessika Carmen Boles Jul 2016

Deconstructing The Diagnosis: Making The Case For A New Discourse On Childhood Cancer, Jessika Carmen Boles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Childhood cancer is both a medical ailment and a cultural phenomenon created within dominant discursive notions of childhood/adulthood, health/illness, and life/death binaries. Research to date on the learning and development of children with cancer has primarily focused on quantifying the knowledge they possess about their illness and treatment and recommendations for medical staff based on the child's assumed capabilities and limitations. Little is known about how children with cancer actively negotiate discursive beliefs in this context. Therefore, the purpose of this Foucauldian (1970) post-structural case study research was to deconstruct the ways in which children with cancer learn about their …

Investigating Parent Reactions To Children's Distress In The Context Of Stressful Life Events And Childhood Cancer: A Person-Centered Approach, Katianne Marie Howard Sharp Jul 2016

Investigating Parent Reactions To Children's Distress In The Context Of Stressful Life Events And Childhood Cancer: A Person-Centered Approach, Katianne Marie Howard Sharp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined children’s perceptions of how caregivers reacted to their expression of distress resulting from their self-identified most stressful life event. Perceptions of parental reactions were first categorized according to children’s cancer history (cancer group versus healthy comparison group) and type of event (cancer- versus non-cancer-related event) before identifying profiles of perceived caregiver reactions. Participants included 159 children and adolescents with a history of cancer and 45 children and adolescents without history of serious illness (8-17 years of age). Children reported on their perception of their caregivers’ reaction to their stressful event-related distress, as well as their cumulative stressful …

Youth's Adjustment To Cancer: Examination Of Patterns Of Adjustment And The Role Of Peers, Rachel N. Tillery May 2016

Youth's Adjustment To Cancer: Examination Of Patterns Of Adjustment And The Role Of Peers, Rachel N. Tillery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Little research has examined the heterogeneity of patterns of emotional adjustment for a pediatric oncology population, nor is the nature of peer relations for youth’s adjustment to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer well understood. To address these gaps in the literature the adjustment of 279 youth (cancer group, n = 156, control group, n = 123), each with one parent, and one teacher, was evaluated. Youth completed measures of posttraumatic stress, depression, anxiety, posttraumatic growth, and perceived positive changes. Youth, parents, and teachers reported on youth’s peer relations. Latent profile analysis revealed three profiles. The majority of youth (42.1%) …

Validity Of The Tanita Bia In Measuring Body Composition In Pediatric Patients With Chronic Disease, Ayesha Ghani Dec 2015

Validity Of The Tanita Bia In Measuring Body Composition In Pediatric Patients With Chronic Disease, Ayesha Ghani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Body composition is negatively affected in pediatric patients with chronic disease such as HIV, Sickle Cell Disease, and Cancer due to the effect of disease itself on the body and the various treatment regiments these children must be on. Monitoring the changing body composition in these children may help clinicians’ better address these effects in a timely manner in order to promote better growth and development and improve survival rate. The Tanita® BIA is an inexpensive and portable tool that can be used to access body composition. However, few studies have been conducted to determine its accuracy in measuring …

Gold And Magnetic-Optical Nanoparticles For The Capture, Detection, And Combinatorial Treatment Of Cancer, Saheel Dilip Bhana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cancer is a major health problem worldwide and is the second cause of death in the United States. Improved methods to fight cancer are greatly needed. The early detection of cancer is vital to help stop the spread of cancer. Circulating tumor cells are a hallmark of this invasive behavior of cancer. Sensitive and specific detection of CTCs can help in early detection of cancer preventing metastasis. CTC detection is extremely challenging because the number of CTCs in the blood of cancer patients is extremely low. Here, we report a new assay for high sensitivity detection of rare epithelial cancer …
