Authenticity And Architecture: A Contemporary Stamp Of Incompleteness, Eric Richard Rivera

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis engages a discussion of authenticity and its relationship to architecture, and utilizes the design process to understand the result of employing authenticity as a conceptual approach. The city of study is Memphis, Tennessee. To establish solid grounding, the project utilizes an abandoned building and examines its historical record to understand the site context and history. This project’s typology (primarily housing) aims to promote an active zone, known as a “micro-neighborhood,” for the public to engage socially to reinforce collective gathering and community ownership. This is accomplished through an adaptive urban renewal process that includes economic, environmental, and social …

The Power Of Acoustical Architecture: Understanding How Acoustics Encourage The Participation Of Communal Singing Through The Making Of A Sacred Space, Emily Sinden-Redding May 2018

The Power Of Acoustical Architecture: Understanding How Acoustics Encourage The Participation Of Communal Singing Through The Making Of A Sacred Space, Emily Sinden-Redding

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will explore the way architectural acoustic designs can encourage congregational participation and singing, to touch people emotionally and spiritually, and inspire community, to better enhance the worship experience. Human interactions, behaviors, and emotional responses are influenced by sound and the acoustics of a space, but too often architecture ignores and disregards the acoustical aspects of design. Architecture must be designed to respond to acoustics, to create a more successful, holistic design, and an enriching experience for the users. Architectural acoustics play an especially essential role in sacred spaces; these spaces have unique acoustical challenges as both leaders and …

Many people living in the Memphis Metropolitan Statistical Area(MSA) rely on private passenger automobiles as the primary meansof transportation. Analysis Of A Middle Mississippi Structure At The Denmark Site (40md85), Christian Elaine Roesler Apr 2016

Analysis Of A Middle Mississippi Structure At The Denmark Site (40md85), Christian Elaine Roesler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Originally thought to be a vacant ceremonial center, magnetometer surveys and subsequent excavations have demonstrated that the Denmark site in Madison County, Tennessee is a town-size settlement. Targeted excavation based upon this magnetometry data revealed what is now referred to as Structure . After analyzing function, construction, and location, Structure 1 has been hypothesized to be a residence, one building within a cluster of buildings, possibly representing ane xtended family compound. Excavations confirm that Structure 1 is of wall trench construction, however determining its above ground architecture has been problematic. Structure 1 has also been found to be similar to …

Finding Awareness Through Process: The Restoration Of The Flaneur, Ashley Marilyn Skrabut Apr 2016

Finding Awareness Through Process: The Restoration Of The Flaneur, Ashley Marilyn Skrabut

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a loss of individuality found within our culture today that is primarily due to the overload of hyperreality presented via the media. We have created a labeling system; immediately judging a person on their appearance rather than taking the time to get to know them. The highest level of this can be found in the fashion industry where models lose themselves in order to become blank canvases on which designers display their work. They are intended to fade away in order to better display the collection. This thesis is an exploration of process, finding an understanding and awareness …

Rebuilding Community Through The Use Of Archetypes, Karrar Ihsan Ali Al Jassani Apr 2016

Rebuilding Community Through The Use Of Archetypes, Karrar Ihsan Ali Al Jassani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to a lack of emotional and visual character, many examples of current architecture are identity-deicient, failing to communicate their communities’ values. Identity loss is an issue for all humans, as places are remembered based on their distinctions, creating memory and recalling memory later in a solitary space. Heritage is coded in symbols. Some of these symbols are created consciously yet have unconscious effects. Most of symbols are forms, shapes, and colors that generate speciic reactions in the psyche, unconsciously, in the form of habits and beliefs. All these patterns of experiencing are layers of history, shared with all of …

Design Thinking: Expanding The Role Of The Architect, Jeremy Scott Dollar Apr 2016

Design Thinking: Expanding The Role Of The Architect, Jeremy Scott Dollar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A place is not made from a building alone; it is made from that which takes place in the building, and the people who inhabit the building. Therefore, architects must begin to apply their creative and analytical thinking skills to all facets that make up a place. Architects can begin interconnecting systems in the world to make it a better place. This type of Design Thinking will lead architects to produce more than buildings. It will open opportunities in other fields that desire creative minds to better their organizations. The use of Design Thinking and Systems Thinking theories, is described …

An Urban Cemetery: Weaving An Architectural Thread Between The Sacred And The City, Anthea J. Selkirk Apr 2014

An Urban Cemetery: Weaving An Architectural Thread Between The Sacred And The City, Anthea J. Selkirk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Death is a taboo subject in our society and our cemeteries are a reflection of our collective repression of the idea of death. Contemporary culture has desacralized our built enviroment by moving our sacred cemeteries from the center of the city, to the outskirts where they are forgotten about. Is there still a place for the cemetery in everyday life? If so, how does one create a place that speaks equally to the aspects of life and death? This thesis is based on the conviction that burial grounds can be integrated into everyday life, and that there should be a …

Experience And Activity, Architecture Is Attraction: Using Phenomenological Architecture And Activity Based Planning To Ignite The Urban Community, Jesse Benjamin Webb Apr 2013

Experience And Activity, Architecture Is Attraction: Using Phenomenological Architecture And Activity Based Planning To Ignite The Urban Community, Jesse Benjamin Webb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the notion that “architecture is attraction”. Architecture exerts an attractive force, compelling human interaction and habitation. Insight is sought as to what compels this “attraction”. People value architecture through two primary assessments: their visceral experiences, and the activities performed at a given place. A “perpetually attractive site” is designed for these attributes through phenomenological devices, and activity based planning. This methodology is executed in a statement building, impacting the urban fabric. The project culmination is the “Steel City Hotel & Venue Complex” in downtown Youngstown, Ohio. Youngstown was a once booming steel town stifled by outsourcing. Recently …

A Third Place For The Third Sex: How Architecture Can Influence A Change Of Perception In Marginalized Populations, Robert Allen Paulus Apr 2013

A Third Place For The Third Sex: How Architecture Can Influence A Change Of Perception In Marginalized Populations, Robert Allen Paulus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Marginalized populations are often under represented in the built environment as architecture finds itself bound by the desires of those who employ its services. Individuals, developers, planners, and local governments push for designs which are influenced by and designed for the status quo giving little thought to the full range of users which may inhabit the space. This thesis seeks to answer: how can architecture inspire change in the perception of marginalized populations? It will establish a framework for understanding the psychology of marginalized populations; define a specific marginalized population, the LGBTQ community, outline their use of space, resulting in …

Hail: Human Auto Integrated Lifestyle, Theodore John Risch Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to address the issues that are faced in the built environment in regards to the way that cities are shaped by dependence on the automobile. When a city is developed with the primary concern of automobile accessibility; human accessibility and experience become neglected. Using statistical data on public transportation ridership and auto dependency trends, the design will find a solution to the lack of human experience in urban landscapes that have been designed for the automobile. Therefore, the design solution puts forth the human experience, and strategically plans for changes in automobile density and …
