A Lasting Impression? A Study Of Middle Kingdom Seal Impressions From Elephantine Island, Katherine Margaret Consola Apr 2021

A Lasting Impression? A Study Of Middle Kingdom Seal Impressions From Elephantine Island, Katherine Margaret Consola

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sealing as a practice in ancient Egypt has been attested by thousands of exemplars recovered from archaeological sites. Seals have been found in cemeteries, settlements, and military forts, which suggests they had a multifaceted use as administrative tools and religious amulets. Preserved mud sealings are equally informative, since complete sealings hold the negative impression of the seal inscription and the surface they were adhered to, such as fabric, wood, or papyrus. The present study analyzes a corpus of 423 seal impressions from a Middle Kingdom settlement site on Elephantine Island excavated by the Realities of Life project from the German …

Investigating Intra-Site Variability In The Use Of Buildings During The Mississippian Period At The Ames Town Site (40fy7) In Western Tennesee, Krista F. Menietto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates a series of overlapping structures in unit F1-U25 at Ames (40FY7), an Early to Middle Mississippian period (ca. AD 1050 - 1300) site in Fayette County, Tennessee. Ames is comprised of a town, plaza, and four mounds all surrounded by a palisade wall. Approximately 220 meters east of the palisade wall, unit F1-U25 revealed a series of superimposed structures. The two primary goals of this thesis include determining the temporal relationship between the superimposed structures and the town site; and determining the function of the structures. A multi-staged research design including geophysical prospection, soil analysis, excavation, artifact …

Assessing The Use Of Soil Phosphate Analysis As An Archaeological Prospection Tool At The Ames Site (40fy7), Fayette County Tennessee, Kathryn Rose Proctor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Archaeologists are increasingly integrating multiple survey techniques to reduce errors and biases in attempts to locate archaeological deposits and to gain a better understanding of people's use of space. This study assesses the utility of soil phosphate analysis as an archaeological prospecting tool in western Tennessee through soil analyses at the Ames site (40FY7) in Fayette County, Tennessee. The spatial distribution of available phosphorus and percent loss on ignition are compared to mapped magnetometry data over two areas with confirmed archaeological deposits. The loss on ignition results did not visually correspond with areas of archaeological activity; however, the spatial distribution …

A Diachronic Analysis Of Settlement Patterns And Drought In The Central Mississippi River Valley, Shelby Hobbs Nov 2017

A Diachronic Analysis Of Settlement Patterns And Drought In The Central Mississippi River Valley, Shelby Hobbs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to study the settlement distributions of the Central Mississippi River Valley (CMV) during the Mississippian Period from A.D. 900-1600. Using radiocarbon dates and site locations, a Geographic Information System model was developed to visualize the spatio-temporal shifts in settlement patterns. This technique revealed a consistent cycle of aggregation and dispersion throughout the Early, Middle, and Late Mississippian Periods. Shifts in settlement patterns were then compared against paleoclimate data from the North American Drought Atlas to see if there was a relationship between site distributions and drought. This analysis found a multitude of decadal drought …

Characterizing The Mortuary Practices In Highland Ancash, Perú: Analysis Of Funerary Contexts At Hualcayán, Elizabeth Katherine Cruzado Carranza Apr 2016

Characterizing The Mortuary Practices In Highland Ancash, Perú: Analysis Of Funerary Contexts At Hualcayán, Elizabeth Katherine Cruzado Carranza

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is the study of the characteristics of mortuary practices at the archeological site of Hualcayán, in highland Ancash, Perú, during A.D.. 1 to 1000. Hualcayán is a complex site with nearly 4000 years of occupation in an area of 4 square kilometers. In order to define the characteristics of mortuary practices at this site, I developed three research questions to examine the multiple lines of evidence for variation and significance of the burials. These are the questions: which burial pattern variations occurred in Hualcayán during A.D.. 1 to 1000, what are the burial pattern variations between funerary structure …

Analysis Of A Middle Mississippi Structure At The Denmark Site (40md85), Christian Elaine Roesler Apr 2016

Analysis Of A Middle Mississippi Structure At The Denmark Site (40md85), Christian Elaine Roesler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Originally thought to be a vacant ceremonial center, magnetometer surveys and subsequent excavations have demonstrated that the Denmark site in Madison County, Tennessee is a town-size settlement. Targeted excavation based upon this magnetometry data revealed what is now referred to as Structure . After analyzing function, construction, and location, Structure 1 has been hypothesized to be a residence, one building within a cluster of buildings, possibly representing ane xtended family compound. Excavations confirm that Structure 1 is of wall trench construction, however determining its above ground architecture has been problematic. Structure 1 has also been found to be similar to …

Analyzing The Use Of Intra- And Inter-Structure Space At Ames, A Mississippian Town In Fayette County, Tennessee, Benjamin James Cross Apr 2016

Analyzing The Use Of Intra- And Inter-Structure Space At Ames, A Mississippian Town In Fayette County, Tennessee, Benjamin James Cross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ames (40FY7) is an Early-Middle Mississippian period town (A.D. 1050-1300) with two dozen structures, four mounds, and plazas enclosed within a palisade located in Fayette County, Tennessee. Very little research has been done on Early-Middle Mississippian settlements in West Tennessee; this has resulted in little being known about the social life history of these sites. Previous investigations at Ames have refuted that the mound site was a Vacant Ceremonial Center, and have shown a planned community layout that changed over time. This study utilizes multiple lines of evidence such as magnetometry data, surface collections, and excavation to determine the function …

A Stylistic Analysis Of Protohistoric Polychrome Ceramics From The Lower Mississippi Valley, Karla Oesch Apr 2016

A Stylistic Analysis Of Protohistoric Polychrome Ceramics From The Lower Mississippi Valley, Karla Oesch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The unique nature of ceramics from the Lower Mississippi Valley provides an important basis for detailed ceramic studies that aid researchers in understanding processes of social change. These ceramic assemblages, especially those dating to the Protohistoric period, will be the focus of this research. Ceramic vessels from Coahoma, Lee, and Phillips Counties, will be used to compile a database of design motifs, in addition to other ceramic characteristics. Using the available radiocarbon dates from these sites, my research will help to better understand the chronological placement of specific ceramic characteristics. Furthermore, my research will not only supplement ceramic chronologies, but …

Ceramics As An Ethnic Identifier: Libyans In The Nile Delta During The Third Intermediate Period, Rachel Jana Mittelman Jul 2014

Ceramics As An Ethnic Identifier: Libyans In The Nile Delta During The Third Intermediate Period, Rachel Jana Mittelman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates whether or not ceramics can be used to determine ethnicity, demographics, and settlement patterns of Libyans living in Lower Egypt during the Third Intermediate Period (Dynasties 21-24, ca. 1100-713 BCE). As few Libyan ceramics have been found and collated, the ceramic corpora from Mendes, Tanis, and Sais - attested Egyptian centers of Libyan habitation - were compared to the assemblages from Memphis, a city which housed both Libyans and Egyptians, and Tell El-Retaba, a city with no known Libyan settlement. This study first aimed to define a distinct Libyan identity based on textual evidence from Egyptian and …
