"Our Kind Of Communication": Rhetorical Discoveries Of A Resonant Communicative Philosophy On Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, Olivia Marilee Warfield May 2020

"Our Kind Of Communication": Rhetorical Discoveries Of A Resonant Communicative Philosophy On Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, Olivia Marilee Warfield

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project investigates what Mr. Fred Rogers referred to as "our kind of communication" in a 1969 Senate testimony wherein he was awarded twenty million dollars to fund continuation of his children's educational television program Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. I ask how "our kind of communication" manifests throughout the series' thirty-three year run and then contextualize the communicative mode's significance in the present day. I position this study as a communicative, philosophical inquiry which connects issues of pedagogy, rhetoric, epistemology, and ontology. First, I ground the study in relevant literature regarding mass media and (public) television, rhetorical televisual framing, an amended …

The Effects Of Diet And Food Deprivation On The Sexual And Exploratory Behaviors Of Meadow Voles, Microtus Pennsylvanicus, Lyndsey Marie Pierson Jan 2018

The Effects Of Diet And Food Deprivation On The Sexual And Exploratory Behaviors Of Meadow Voles, Microtus Pennsylvanicus, Lyndsey Marie Pierson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) is a small herbivorous rodent inhabiting grassy fields throughout the Northern United States and Canada. Meadow voles are promiscuous, with males and females taking multiple mates during a single breeding season. Female meadow voles are territorial while males occupy large home ranges that encompass the territories of multiple females. My research focused on how changes in diet or food availability influenced the sexual and exploratory behaviors of meadow voles. In Chapters 1 and 2, I assessed the influence of phytoestrogens on the sexual behavior of meadow voles. Phytoestrogens are nonsteroidal compounds produced by plants that …

Kenneth Burke's Adolescence, 1915-1920: An Archival Study Of Influence, William Ernest Schraufnagel Apr 2017

Kenneth Burke's Adolescence, 1915-1920: An Archival Study Of Influence, William Ernest Schraufnagel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation applies the method of influence studies to the archive of communication theorist Kenneth Burke (1897-1993) between the years 1915-1920. During this time, Burke was influenced by British and French aesthetic writers along with some philosophy and the writings of Cicero. As he was not conventionally trained in an academic discipline, this study shows how Burke’s theory of communication began to emerge from these disparate strands. The strongest influence on Burke during this time was the novel Marius the Epicurean by Walter Pater. As Harold Bloom’s theory of influence teaches, strong writers such as Burke “misread,” or willfully distort, their …

A Mixed-Methods Examination Of The Relationship Between Parent-Professional Interactions And Parental Grief After Their Child Dies Of Cancer, Carlos Torres Jan 2017

A Mixed-Methods Examination Of The Relationship Between Parent-Professional Interactions And Parental Grief After Their Child Dies Of Cancer, Carlos Torres

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine how bereaved parents interactions with their deceased childs pediatric oncology professional care team have impacted their grief symptoms. Thirty participants whose children died of cancer one to three years ago completed an in-depth interview and surveys measuring meaning-making, depression, and grief symptoms. Correlational analyses of the measures found that an increase in meaning making was associated with lower depressive and grief symptoms. A content analysis of the interviews found that many participants regarded staff like family, had on-going relationships with staff after their child died, and described various ways staff interactions …

Ditka Wears Prada: Inclusion, Competition And Resistance Through Fantasy Football, Caroline Sawyer Jul 2016

Ditka Wears Prada: Inclusion, Competition And Resistance Through Fantasy Football, Caroline Sawyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sports & sports fandom, especially football, is a "historically male cutural practice" and has recently experiences an increase in women's participation (Gosling, 2007, p. 250), with 45% of NFL fans identified as women (Jessop, 2012). However, even with the recent increase in participation, women remain marginalized. Further, women are traditionally restricted to their roles as mothers and wives due to the hegemonic masculinity ideologies of sport. In addition, this marginalization causes women's sport fandon to be called into question based on the simple fact that they are women.Although women are denied membership in the group of "sports fans" (Markovits & …

The Effect Of Contextual Variables On Intraspecific Interactions And Space-Use In Meadow Voles, Microtus Pennsylvanicus, Christian Thomas Vlautin Apr 2013

The Effect Of Contextual Variables On Intraspecific Interactions And Space-Use In Meadow Voles, Microtus Pennsylvanicus, Christian Thomas Vlautin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The outcomes of social interactions may depend on the circumstances of the encounter. Using a variety of social and environmental cues, I tested the hypothesis that the responses of meadow voles to conspecifics would be affected by the context in which that encounter occurred. Chapter two describes experiments showing that unlike long-photoperiod (LP) voles, which prefer the top-scent donor to the bottom-scent donor of an over-mark, only some short-photoperiod (SP) males showed such preferences, and no SP females preferred the top-scent donor to the bottom-scent donor of an over-mark. Chapter three details experiments demonstrating that periods of food deprivation did …

The Rhetorical Situation Of Facebook, Justin L. Suiter Jul 2012

The Rhetorical Situation Of Facebook, Justin L. Suiter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The online social network Facebook is a site of ocnsiderable rhetorical activity. Because it exists at the frontier of Web 2.0 or "new media" technology, this rhetorical activity has certain novel features that require an expansion of the concept of rhetorical situation. I apply Lloyd Bitzer's original theory of rhetorical situation to the context of Facebook in order to highlight the ways in which technological advances and shifts in theory necessitate a broader understanding of rhetorical situations. I argue that two of Bitzer's three essential elements, constraints and audience, are applicable to Facebook but must be adapted to suit its …

Condition-Dependent Effects On Proceptive Behaviors In Meadow Voles, Nicholas James Hobbs Apr 2012

Condition-Dependent Effects On Proceptive Behaviors In Meadow Voles, Nicholas James Hobbs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, live in transitional grasslands where food is available in patches of uneven quality. As such, voles may differ in their access to quality and sufficient forage. It is hypothesized that voles that have access to better quality and more abundant forage will be more likely to signal their interest in opposite-sex conspecfics and be more likely to secure mates compared to voles that do not have such access. This and related hypotheses were tested. The expression of the behaviors used to indicate interest in a potential mate varied with the nutritional status of the actor and …

The Use Of Verbal And Nonverbal Cues In Computer-Mediated Communication: When And Why?, Monica Ann Schepers Riordan Mar 2011

The Use Of Verbal And Nonverbal Cues In Computer-Mediated Communication: When And Why?, Monica Ann Schepers Riordan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research in face-to-face communication indicates that nonverbal cues such as facial expression, prosody, and gesture are significant for interpreting the emotional content of a message. The lack of these nonverbal cues in computer-mediated communication (CMC) suggests a high possibility of miscommunication. However, recent research shows that interlocutors using CMC adapt to the lack of visual and vocal cues in the channel and are able to express themselves with the use of text-based nonverbal cues and word choice. Yet the manner in which many nonverbal cues are used in computer-mediated communication is still unknown, as is the relationship between nonverbal and …

Engaging Rural Community Members As Problem Solvers: Application Of Health Communication To Improve The Quality Of Health Care In Southwest Uganda, Tesfa N. Alexander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using communication theories and anthropological models, I analyze the narratives of community members who are caretakers of children ages 5 and under in Southwest Uganda to situate rural community members as problem solvers whose insights can be used to inform sustainable and effective public health strategies that can lead to improved health outcomes. Throughout my analysis, I uncover themes and concepts from community members' narratives that demonstrate that health-seeking behaviors of rural community members are largely shaped by perceptions of interpersonal and social trust in local health care practitioners. Additionally, an analysis of discourse from patient-provider interactions in biomedical and …

America's P.R.I.D.E.: Entertainment Education As A Health Communication Intervention Strategy For Middle School And High School Students, Elizabeth Stephens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation research was to study the ways that members of the P.R.I.D.E. club at Houston High School in Germantown, Tennessee used entertainment-education communication strategies in their presentations and the interpersonal persuasive strategies members used when talking with peers about substance abuse. Participants in this study were members of the P.R.I.D.E. club and ranged in age from 14-years-old to 18-years-old. My research questions examined how P.R.I.D.E. incorporated constructs of entertainment-education (emotional involvement, identification with characters, self-efficacy, perceived realism, and fear appeals) into their presentations to persuade peers to abstain from using alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, and examined …

The Closed Cohort Learning Model: Enabling Innovation And Organizational Success, Frederick D. Ellrich Apr 2010

The Closed Cohort Learning Model: Enabling Innovation And Organizational Success, Frederick D. Ellrich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

AbstractThis study examines the development of trust, communication, and collaboration in a closed cohort academic community. The closed cohort has gained in popularity in recent years and is now common at the graduate level, especially in the colleges of business and education. A closed cohort is a group of students who begin and end together, and proceed in lock step through a sequence of courses. The research is a case study of a master’s program in leadership at a university in the mid-south area of the United States. The research approach is phenomenological in that the researcher was an instructor …
