Scaffolding Strategic Planning And Reflection Within Software Engineering Student Team, Murshida Rahman Mouree Dec 2022

Scaffolding Strategic Planning And Reflection Within Software Engineering Student Team, Murshida Rahman Mouree

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Strategic planning is essential for a student software engineering team to successfully accomplish a project. Often student software teams struggle with planning, because it is hard for novices to distribute work among teammates, identify tasks, prioritize development tasks, and know how much time they should invest in each task. In other words, students struggle to self-regulate their learning. Prior work in this area typically focuses on an individual, and does not promote iterative reflection and feedback on a collaboratively created plan. In this paper, we introduce Software Engineering Team Strategic Planning (SETS Planning), a novel strategic planning and reflection technique …

The Influence Of Self- And Other-Oriented Persuasive Messages On The Intention To Engage In Health-Oriented Behavior Change, Kierstynn Arielle Hunter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although there is research investigating the influence of self- and other-oriented persuasive messages on health-oriented behavior change, little exists on the influence of these messages on mask-wearing behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, much of the research on persuasive health messages uses advertisements and other textual presentations of these persuasive messages, and little research exists on vocal presentations. This study examined how the vocal presentation of these self- and other-oriented persuasive messages can influence an individual’s self-reported likelihood of engaging in mask-wearing. Analyses showed that hearing a self-oriented persuasive message led participants to give reasons to wear a mask that …

Question Modifiers In Vqa: Evaluating Model Sensitivity, William Johnstone Britton Dec 2022

Question Modifiers In Vqa: Evaluating Model Sensitivity, William Johnstone Britton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Visual Question Answering (VQA) is a challenge problem that can advance AI by integrating several important sub-disciplines including natural language understanding and computer vision. Large VQA datasets that are publicly available for training and evaluation have driven the growth of VQA models that have obtained increasingly larger accuracy scores. However, it is also important to understand how much a model understands the details that are provided in a question. For example, studies in psychology have shown that syntactic complexity places a larger cognitive load on humans. Analogously, we want to understand if models have the perceptual capability to handle modifications …

The Relationship Of Dichotic Listening Abilities And Sound Sensitivity For Older Adults, Rachel Huber Dec 2022

The Relationship Of Dichotic Listening Abilities And Sound Sensitivity For Older Adults, Rachel Huber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT While amplification is the most prevalent treatment for mild to moderately severe hearing loss, many individuals with hearing loss report discomfort with amplified sounds. Despite attempts to resolve these issues with digital sound processing, adverse effects continue to be reported. It is possible these adverse effects are due to sound sensitivity rather than over amplification. Sound sensitivity has been found to relate to personality traits, emotionality, anxiety, depression, and self-reported hearing disability. One way to evaluate sound sensitivities is to explore how individuals accept sound. Sound acceptability is a holistic construct that attempts to evaluate a sound’s aversiveness, pleasantness, …

Dopaminergic Modulation Of Discounting Of Delayed Punishment, Grace L. Minnes Dec 2022

Dopaminergic Modulation Of Discounting Of Delayed Punishment, Grace L. Minnes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Effective decision-making involves careful consideration of all potential positive and negative outcomes. Importantly, negative outcomes often occur later in time, leading to underestimation, or “discounting,” of these consequences. The Delayed Punishment Decision-making Task (DPDT) was developed to study sensitivity to delayed vs immediate punishment during cost/benefit decision-making in rats. Rats choose between two levers, one resulting in a small, single-pellet reward with no foot shock punishment, and the other resulting in a larger, three-pellet reward followed by a mild foot shock punishment. This punishment is preceded by a systematically increasing delay as the blocks progress (0, 4, 8, 12, 16 …

Benchmarking And Developing Novel Methods For G Protein-Coupled Receptor Ligand Discovery, Gregory Leon Szwabowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) are integral membrane proteins mediating responses from extracellular effectors that regulate a diverse set of physiological functions. Consequently, GPCR are the targets of ~34% of current FDA-approved drugs.3 Although it is clear that GPCR are therapeutically significant, discovery of novel drugs for these receptors is often impeded by a lack of known ligands and/or experimentally determined structures for potential drug targets. However, computational techniques have provided paths to overcome these obstacles. As such, this work discusses the development and application of novel computational methods and workflows for GPCR ligand discovery. Chapter 1 provides an overview of …

The Impact Of Switching Schools On College-Going, Anne Walton Garrison Nov 2022

The Impact Of Switching Schools On College-Going, Anne Walton Garrison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Large urban school districts, especially those with high concentrations of minority and economically disadvantaged students, have high rates of nonstructural student mobility (nonpromotional school-switching). The students in these school districts tend to be the very ones who stand to benefit the most from college attainment. However, the extent to which nonstructural student mobility impacts students’ likelihood of going to college is not fully known. This quasi-experimental study of a class of high school graduates in one urban district fills a gap in the literature by both examining the effects of switching schools in grades 3–12 on college-going and establishing causality …

Contribution Of The Orbitofrontal Cortex To Delayed Punishment Discounting, Anna E. Liley Nov 2022

Contribution Of The Orbitofrontal Cortex To Delayed Punishment Discounting, Anna E. Liley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability to accumulate rewards while minimizing negative consequences is a valuable survival skill. Importantly, many psychiatric diseases such as substance use disorder (SUD; Bechara, 2005; Gowin et al., 2013), attention deficit hyperactivity (Magnus et al., 2021), anxiety (Hartley and Phelps, 2012), major depressive, bipolar, and schizophrenia disorders (Whitton et al., 2015) involve impaired decision-making that can lead to detrimental outcomes. One factor that causes maladaptive decision-making is insensitivity to negative consequences, especially those that occur later in time (Murphy et al., 2001; Bechara and Dolan, 2002; Field et al., 2019). These studies were among the first to investigate how …
