Dynamics Of Seeking Information From Local Tourism Offices In The Event Of A Crisis Among African American Tourists, Ignatius Cahyanto, Lori Pennington-Gray

Travel and Tourism Research Association: Advancing Tourism Research Globally

The study examined African American tourists to determine the dynamics of turning to local tourism organizations in the event of a crisis. This study was framed by three interrelated research questions: the influence of the perception of risk occurring during a trip, the influence of age as well as the types of social media outlets and the user involvement level. The study found that there were significant relationships among physical accidents, weather, cultural barriers, age and the use of Facebook on the likelihood of turning to local tourism organizations in the event of a crisis. Further implications are discussed.

Of late, tipping has become a topic of great debate. This pilot study attempted to capture tipping perceptions and practices in a largely minority population. The study found that respondents perceived the need to tip restaurant servers more regularly than other hospitality service providers such guest service employees and shuttle drivers. The study indicated that the respondents were inconsistent with their perceptions regarding the importance of tipping and practices for two out of the three service providers (guest service employees and hotel shuttle drivers) regarding tipping in the restaurant establishments.
