The Mediating Effect Of Homework Between Self-Regulated Learning And Science Achievement., Matthew D. Kingsley 1968- Dec 2013

The Mediating Effect Of Homework Between Self-Regulated Learning And Science Achievement., Matthew D. Kingsley 1968-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Homework has been shown to have a significant, positive effect on student achievement and grades, particularly at the secondary level (Cooper, Robinson, & Patall, 2006). However, homework completion and its effect on grades is controlled within the realm of the student and its success as a learning strategy depends on many things including the students’ interest in the subject, their confidence, the time they have to complete it, gender and other factors within the home such as parent education level and parent involvement (Trautwein & Ludtke, 2007; J. Xu, 2007; J. Xu, Corno, Lyn, 2006). Through the work of Eccles …

Post-Mortem Analysis Of Cortical Thickness And Neuronal Morphometry In Autism., Shweta Sunil Kamat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a group of conditions characterized by a broad spectrum of deficiencies related to social communication, both verbal and non-verbal, as well as repetitive behaviors such as rocking back and forth, or arm flapping. This devastating group of disorders affects millions of people regardless of their socioeconomic, ethnic and racial backgrounds. Among other issues such as migraines, sensory deficits and intense aggression, epilepsy is a major neurological disorder very highly associated with ASD; roughly one third of all ASD patients are diagnosed with epilepsy, and a much higher proportion suffer from at least one seizure in …

Predictors Of Hiv Risk Behaviors Among Older Adults : A Multilevel Analysis., Laneshia Rae' Mccord Dec 2013

Predictors Of Hiv Risk Behaviors Among Older Adults : A Multilevel Analysis., Laneshia Rae' Mccord

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the past thirty years, HIV has become a worldwide epidemic. Given the surge in the rate of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV, this sheds light as a new worry for sexually active older adults, raising questions about risk behaviors among this group. The issues facing older adults are three-fold in that they are 1) not identifying themselves as being at risk; 2) not identifying risk behaviors; and 3) are not largely being identified in the public realm as participating in risk behaviors. For these reasons, understanding both environmental and individual factors and their unique influences on HIV risk behaviors …

Resilience In Late-Life Bereavement : Disentangling The Relationship Between Resilience And Cumulative Lifetime Loss., Shruti N. Shah Dec 2013

Resilience In Late-Life Bereavement : Disentangling The Relationship Between Resilience And Cumulative Lifetime Loss., Shruti N. Shah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Though much of the recent focus in bereavement literature has been examining the nature and correlates of complicated grief, it is important to recognize that many older adults endure bereavements without major disruptions in emotional and daily functioning, despite the likelihood of having experienced numerous losses over a lifetime. This suggests an adaptive or resilient coping style within the context of late-life bereavement. However, much less is known about the underlying mechanisms and correlates that contribute to different bereavement outcomes. Broadly, the aim of this project was to expand our current knowledge of varying bereavement-related outcomes in an effort to …

These assessments are used to determine if a student is ready for credit-bearing courses at a university. The study addressed the following four research questions: (1) What mathematical prerequisite knowledge do state universities consider necessary to be college ready? Specifically 1a) What content domains do the state universities emphasize in their remediation courses?; 1b) Is there consistency across the state public universities with regard to the content domains?; and (2) How well do …

Southern Honor, Confederate Warfare : Southern Antebellum Cultural Values In Confederate Military Operations, 1861-1865., Matthew D. Goldberg Dec 2013

Southern Honor, Confederate Warfare : Southern Antebellum Cultural Values In Confederate Military Operations, 1861-1865., Matthew D. Goldberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the role antebellum southern cultural paradigms played in Confederate military operations during the American Civil War. The prewar honor culture of the white southern male elite was intensely focused on chivalric values of courage, masculinity, piety, pride, contempt for cowardice, and loyalty. When war broke out between the United States and Confederacy, the southern elite moved from their prewar position as economic, political, and social leaders to military commanders. The violent and militaristic culture that characterized the prewar southern elite guided their actions as the military leadership of the Confederacy. Using the written record of the Confederate …

An Inter-Domain Supervision Framework For Collaborative Clustering Of Data With Mixed Types., Artur Abdullin Dec 2013

An Inter-Domain Supervision Framework For Collaborative Clustering Of Data With Mixed Types., Artur Abdullin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We propose an Inter-Domain Supervision (IDS) clustering framework to discover clusters within diverse data formats, mixed-type attributes and different sources of data. This approach can be used for combined clustering of diverse representations of the data, in particular where data comes from different sources, some of which may be unreliable or uncertain, or for exploiting optional external concept set labels to guide the clustering of the main data set in its original domain. We additionally take into account possible incompatibilities in the data via an automated inter-domain compatibility analysis. Our results in clustering real data sets with mixed numerical, categorical, …

The Marriage Effect : An Intergenerational Analysis Of Marijuana Desistance., Rachel Coonce 1983- Dec 2013

The Marriage Effect : An Intergenerational Analysis Of Marijuana Desistance., Rachel Coonce 1983-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis takes a gendered look at the criminological age-graded theory of informal social control, which posits that social bonds are strongly influential in curbing crime and deviance over the course of an individual's life. However, the theory was based on an all-male sample and is therefore not as applicable to women. It is likely that social bonds for men and women have evolved differently over the course of the last century and it is therefore the goal of this study to analyze how these changes are operating within this informal social control theory. Specifically, this paper analyzes marriage and …

Sistahs With Voices : Influences That Affected The College Choice Of High-Achieving African American Women Who Chose To Attend A Predominantly White Institution Instead Of An Historically Black College Or University., Angela Denise Duncan Dec 2013

Sistahs With Voices : Influences That Affected The College Choice Of High-Achieving African American Women Who Chose To Attend A Predominantly White Institution Instead Of An Historically Black College Or University., Angela Denise Duncan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite a long struggle to gain access, African Americans have always highly valued education. Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) were established specifically to educate this group, but the integration of predominately White institutions (PWI) in the 1960s led to decreased HBCU enrollments and, thus, challenges to their continued relevance. The numerous options for higher education add to the complexities of college choice, especially for students who have various intersecting identities to consider (e.g., African American women). The purpose of this study was to discover what influenced eight high-achieving African American women who chose to attend a PWI instead of …

Testing Location Memory For Threatening And Nonthreatening Stimuli : Implications For Evolutionary Psychological Theorizing., Ryan Patrick Hacklander Dec 2013

Testing Location Memory For Threatening And Nonthreatening Stimuli : Implications For Evolutionary Psychological Theorizing., Ryan Patrick Hacklander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Humans respond to the presence of threatening stimuli more rapidly than nonthreatening stimuli, a trait that some authors believe humans have been selected for. Based on this finding, it has been proposed that humans should also have superior location memory for threatening stimuli, possibly depending on whether stimuli have ancestral (e.g., snakes) or modern (e.g., guns) ecological relevance. This is herein called the Superior Location Memory for Threatening Stimuli (SLMTS) hypothesis. Some authors believe that humans possess a domain-specific adaptation that gives rise to the hypothesized memory advantage for threatening stimuli. The primary aim of this dissertation is to test …

Fighting For Success : The Use Of Resources By Ngos In The Anti-Human Trafficking Social Movement., Lisa Stapleton 1978- Dec 2013

Fighting For Success : The Use Of Resources By Ngos In The Anti-Human Trafficking Social Movement., Lisa Stapleton 1978-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an archival document analysis that will illustrate the importance of effective use of resources on the overall success of an anti-human trafficking organization. While there are multiple studies on resource mobilization and movements in general, little work has emerged regarding successful mobilization strategies in the anti-human trafficking movement. With my research, I pay particular attention to two groups and consider how their interactions with various resources influence their success. Comparing a more successful organization to a less successful organization provides the best assessment of a social movement and the process by which it meets its objectives. Results …

Territoriality And Landscape Of Aggression., Piyumika Sureshni Suriyampola Dec 2013

Territoriality And Landscape Of Aggression., Piyumika Sureshni Suriyampola

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Behavioral adjustments in response to the presence of landmarks can exert strong effects on population dynamics of territorial species as well as the evolution of behavior and social systems. Hence, an understanding of the role of landmarks in animal contests provides a link between behavioral decision-making and population dynamics, which has been viewed as a major goal in ecology. This dissertation investigates the effects of landmarks on territory defense, focusing on how landmarks affect differences in sex roles, the landscape of aggression and fundamental territory properties. To investigate these ideas, I used three different cichlid fish species as model systems. …

Knitting As Art., Deborah Levine Dec 2013

Knitting As Art., Deborah Levine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hand knitting is my chosen technique for making art. Because knitting is traditionally thought of as craft, my work must overcome several obstacles in order to be valued as art. First, objects made using craft techniques and materials are often functional; even when it is not, we view them as such and value them less than art. Second, the materials and techniques used for knitting are not traditional fine art materials. This has changed; process and materials are what much contemporary art is about. Yet the bias against craft techniques and materials persists. Finally, knitting is viewed as woman's work …

Success On Their Own Terms : Youths' Perspectives On What It Means To Be Successful In Foster Care., Justin Miller Dec 2013

Success On Their Own Terms : Youths' Perspectives On What It Means To Be Successful In Foster Care., Justin Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Foster care is a fundamental component of the child welfare system. Traditionally, foster care has been viewed as the primary mechanism for caring for children placed outside of their home, and is considered one of the central intervention strategies for child welfare practitioners. Foster care services are regularly recommended for children who are abused and neglected. In 2011, there were an estimated 401,000 youths in foster care and approximately 646,000 youth were served by the foster care system. Yet, despite the importance of foster care to child welfare, social work literature in general, and child welfare literature specifically, is devoid …

Face Recognition Using Statistical Adapted Local Binary Patterns., Abdallah Abd-Elghafar Mohamed Dec 2013

Face Recognition Using Statistical Adapted Local Binary Patterns., Abdallah Abd-Elghafar Mohamed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biometrics is the study of methods of recognizing humans based on their behavioral and physical characteristics or traits. Face recognition is one of the biometric modalities that received a great amount of attention from many researchers during the past few decades because of its potential applications in a variety of security domains. Face recognition however is not only concerned with recognizing human faces, but also with recognizing faces of non-biological entities or avatars. Fortunately, the need for secure and affordable virtual worlds is attracting the attention of many researchers who seek to find fast, automatic and reliable ways to identify …

Discursive Affordances : Police, Transfer, And The Performance Of Identity., Robert John Terry Dec 2013

Discursive Affordances : Police, Transfer, And The Performance Of Identity., Robert John Terry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an analysis of how the performance of identity affects the possibilities for the transfer of writing strategies. It begins with a literature review of the existing research on transfer within the field of composition and posits that an undertheorized understanding of identity may be leading to misunderstandings related to the transfer of knowledge. It then provides a framework for understanding the performance of identity developed through James Paul Gee's Discourse theory and provides a framework for understanding and identifying Discourse conflicts related to the performance of identity. After providing an overview of the research site, the Administrative …

In this dissertation, I adopt a praxical theory of rhetorical space to identify and examine how members of The Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality draw on or invoke rhetorical spatiality in their research published in the Journal of Sex Research. My specific research questions were: (1) What types of rhetorical spaces do sexologists create? and, (2) What rhetorical strategies do sexologists use to create rhetorical spaces? The dissertation is divided into five chapters that present different investigations of the production of rhetorical space in The Journal of Sex Research. Chapter One introduces the theoretical and methodological foundation for …

Neighborhoods, Social Capital And Economic Success., Sean M. Payne Dec 2013

Neighborhoods, Social Capital And Economic Success., Sean M. Payne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between neighborhoods, social capital and economic success. In the model developed in this research, social capital mediates the relationship between neighborhoods and economic success. Social capital represents social networks with their associated norms and resources and increases economic success by facilitating cooperation and by lowering transaction costs. Neighborhoods affect social capital through local interactions, network exclusion, social learning and social identity processes. An understudied part of these relationships is the existence of endogeneity among the key variables. Using data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods, this study uses structural equation modeling to …

The Evolution Of Healthcare For Louisville's African American Community, 1865-1990., Angela Calloway Aug 2013

The Evolution Of Healthcare For Louisville's African American Community, 1865-1990., Angela Calloway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is well documented that inequality in the delivery of health care exists within the U.S. (Smedley, Stith & Nelson, 2003; Trivedi, Zaslavsky, Schneider, & Ayanian, 2006). Historically, our health care system was a segregated one in which white Americans enjoyed one system of health care—a more privileged one-- while black Americans experienced another, supported by law and custom. Laws changed after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 but disparate practices lingered. Although there have been studies about the historical picture of segregated health care available to black Americans (Byrd & Clayton, 2000; Savitt, 2007), there is a lack of …

Introduction: The traditional Hawley retainer has been replaced in many orthodontic offices by vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs). There has yet to be a study that investigates preferences and reasons for noncompliance between Hawley and vacuum-formed retainers by allowing each to be worn within the same patient. Specific Aim: To determine differences in compliance and reasons for noncompliance between Hawley and VFRs. Hypothesis: There will be increased compliance with VFRs due to better esthetics, speech, and comfort. Methods: In consecutive months but in a different order, two treatment groups received a set of Hawleys and VFRs following comprehensive treatment. All patients were …

A Hybrid Method For Generating Objectives., Elizabeth Gentry Aug 2013

A Hybrid Method For Generating Objectives., Elizabeth Gentry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Decision making occurs frequently in a person’s life whether it is personal life decisions or business decisions. When one decision is made, it will affect a network of decisions. Each decision made has an impact on a person’s life. Problem structuring describes and organizes the decision problem and is a key element in making better decisions. Generating objectives is a key aspect of problem structuring because objectives show what the decision maker cares about/wants to achieve when making a decision. Of the objectives generated, it is important that the problem structuring method generates quality objectives; objectives that have a significant …

Olanzapine-Induced Liver Injury : Direct Metabolic Effects, Exacerbation By High-Fat Diet, And Protection With Sulforaphane., Robin H. Schmidt 1984- Aug 2013

Olanzapine-Induced Liver Injury : Direct Metabolic Effects, Exacerbation By High-Fat Diet, And Protection With Sulforaphane., Robin H. Schmidt 1984-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Olanzapine (OLZ) is an effective first-line treatment for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The benefits of OLZ are countermanded by side effects such as weight gain, glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia, and liver injury. These effects impact not only antipsychotic medication compliance, but also increase the health risks to patients. Most studies to date have focused on potential effects of OLZ on the central nervous system (e.g., hypothalamic regulation of satiety); however, peripheral changes in key metabolic organs such as the liver may also play a critical role. The obesity rates in the US are now at epidemic levels and obesity-induced liver disease …

Sustainability And Collegiate Recreational Sports Facilities., Thomas Bradley Stinnett Aug 2013

Sustainability And Collegiate Recreational Sports Facilities., Thomas Bradley Stinnett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sustainability is a hot topic in higher education. Buzz words such as green and renewable have helped brand modern environmentalism. A greater emphasis on facility planning, development, and management is contributing to sustainability efforts. Collegiate recreational sports programs often include facilities that pose a challenge to the green movement, due to their size and operational requirements. To identify efforts within the collegiate recreational sports industry, this dissertation focuses on assessing the state of facility sustainability. The purpose of this study was to assess levels of personnel familiarity and institutional level of adoption related to sustainable initiatives at collegiate recreational sports …

The New Paradigm Of Rehabilitation : A Meta-Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Incarceration-Based Rehabilitation In Regards To Recidivism Reduction., Shaun Andrew Dixon 1985- Aug 2013

The New Paradigm Of Rehabilitation : A Meta-Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Incarceration-Based Rehabilitation In Regards To Recidivism Reduction., Shaun Andrew Dixon 1985-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study is a meta-analytic examination of incarceration-based rehabilitation and its ability to reduce recidivism. Substance abuse is a large problem within our convict population; many times it is a substance related conviction that is the cause of the inmates’ incarceration. Claims have been made for decades that if society can effectively rehabilitate these convicts, recidivism rates will be reduced, ultimately lowering incarceration rates. By creating a stringent criterion of inclusion, this study makes an “apples-to-apples” analysis of prior studies on the topic, examining twelve studies of incarceration-based rehabilitation and their outcome variables. The data was synthesized through meta-analytic techniques …

Data for the present study were collected for 186 incoming residents from 6 nursing homes over the course of 1 year. Fifty-six participants were interviewed at the earliest possible time point following admission and rest-activity data were collected via actigraphy for 1 week, after which participants were interviewed a second time. Newly admitted residents in this sample were functionally dependent, highly medicated, and diagnosed with many conditions associated with sleep and/or …

Modeling Risk For The Development Of Child Anxiety : The Role Of Parent Emotion Socialization Practices, Children's Emotional Competence, And Physiological Responsiveness., Sarah Ramsey Williams Aug 2013

Modeling Risk For The Development Of Child Anxiety : The Role Of Parent Emotion Socialization Practices, Children's Emotional Competence, And Physiological Responsiveness., Sarah Ramsey Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The prevalence of child anxiety is high and anxiety disorders are often left untreated throughout childhood and adolescence. Many studies have focused on the role of parenting in understanding the development of anxiety during childhood. Given the importance of the parent-child relationship in a child's development of emotional competence, the role of the parent in facilitating their child's emotional development was proposed here to provide a more specific method of assessing the impact of parenting on risk for developing anxiety. Specifically, the current study hypothesized that parent emotion socialization would predict child emotional development. Further, the study sought to build …

Predicting Mental Well-Being In Assisted Living Communities : The Roles Of Social Capital And The Built Environment., Sarah Elizabeth Walsh Aug 2013

Predicting Mental Well-Being In Assisted Living Communities : The Roles Of Social Capital And The Built Environment., Sarah Elizabeth Walsh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Along the continuum of poor to good health, mental well-being refers to the positive state of being. Mental well-being connotes the ability to manage stress, maintain independence, and is indicative of happiness and improved quality of life. Mental well-being is critical to overall health throughout the lifespan, but it is of particular importance in the context of healthy aging since older adults are more likely to experience compromised mental health. Existing research has identified factors that reduce the risk of poor mental health outcomes: the built environment and individual and community social capital are associated with overall health status and …
