A History Of The Council Of Social Agencies Of Louisville, Kentucky., Mary Trueheart Williamson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Community social planning has recently received the spotlight of attention under the impacts of war and its related demands for a united nation and community. But to those who have had a more intimate contact with the field of social work this is not a new development. For more than twenty years there has been in urban areas a steady growth of organizations known as councils of social agencies, welfare councils, or community councils whose job it has been to coordinate and plan the social welfare programs for the communities of which they are a part. As in other cities, …
Convalescent Care In Louisville, Kentucky., Grace B. Caswell
Convalescent Care In Louisville, Kentucky., Grace B. Caswell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is undertaken to survey and evaluate the adequacy of convalescent facilities available for indigent persons who have been under the care of the surgical service at the Louisville General Hospital. The adequacy of convalescent care will be measured first, in relation to its scope, second, in relation to its help to the patients, and third, in its interaction with other community agencies. The study is prompted by the recognition of the fact that convalescence is a sadly neglected field of medical care. Convalescence will be defined for the purposes of this study as the more or less gradual …

A Study Of Day Care Particularly In Reference To Louisville, Kentucky., Nancy Lee Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A problem of great concern to many communities in the United States is that of day care of children of working mothers. Since the beginning of the defense program and particularly after the United States entered the war, wide publicity has been given to the problem of children left without supervision while their mothers worked. Communities that were affected by increases in population began to establish committees to cope with the situation. Numerous surveys were conducted in an attempt to measure the adequacy of existing facilities and the extent of the need for additional day care centers. Congressional action made …

A Study Of Twenty-Eight Working Mothers And Their Problems., Marianna E. Lawson
A Study Of Twenty-Eight Working Mothers And Their Problems., Marianna E. Lawson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
What are the problems of working mothers was the question that was uppermost in our minds when we began our study of twenty-eight working mothers and their families. We felt that through examining data regarding ages, occupation, education, marital status, number of dependents, et cetera that we would be able to ascertain at once some of the difficulties these mothers were facing. We wanted to know how much of the financial burden the mother carried and whether she was showing any signs of strain because of her double duties of wage earner and housekeeper. What help did she have from …
The Policies Of Presidents Buchanan And Lincoln In The Fort Sumter Crisis., W. L. Dennis
The Policies Of Presidents Buchanan And Lincoln In The Fort Sumter Crisis., W. L. Dennis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to review the period between the election of Lincoln and the beginning of the Civil War, especially in regard to the influence Fort Sumter was to play in the actual commencement of hostilities. Even in the colonial days there had been a reluctance to enter into a strong central Union, although such a Union had been required by the strongest necessity of self-interest and self-preservation. The old Articles of Confederation had demonstrated the reluctance on the part of the States to yield their sovereignty to a central Government. Although the new Constitution of 1789 …
The Incidence Of Human Infestation With Trichinella Spiralis As Revealed By The Examination Of 570 Diaphragms At The Louisville General Hospital, Louisville, Kentucky., Letitia S. Kimsey
The Incidence Of Human Infestation With Trichinella Spiralis As Revealed By The Examination Of 570 Diaphragms At The Louisville General Hospital, Louisville, Kentucky., Letitia S. Kimsey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the advent of improved methods of examination of muscle tissue for the presence of Trichinella spiralis and the detection of trichinosis by the skin and precipitin tests, there has been an awakening of interest in the disease which has resulted in a greatly increased volume of statistical data. The present survey was undertaken with the thought in mind that it might be of statistical interest to determine the incidence of infestation with Trichinella spiralis in patients coming to autopsy at the Louisville General Hospital. This incidence was determined by the examination of the diaphragms of these patients.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
"Kentucky owed most of her remarkable intellectual development at an early age in her history, to the fact that at the close of the Revolutionary War in 1781 many of the most intellectual and cultivated of officers and soldiers in that war from the states of Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland - being unsettled in their homes and business by its great duration privations and calamities - sought new homes in the then richest land in the known world. Thus, the times and the country itself, the very life of hardship, self-denial, and self-dependence, combined to make a race …

History Of Public Secondary Education In Louisville., Harold S. Keeling
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The development of secondary education in Louisville is significant because this city (together with the City of Covington) took the lead in establishing high schools in Kentucky. Although the state legislature from early days encouraged county seminaries and private academies, it gave practically no attention to high schools until 1908. After the Civil War various cities established high schools. There were few county high schools until the last decade of the century (1890-1900). Fifty-nine Kentucky high schools were accredited by the State University in 1908, but there 1 were perhaps as many unaccredited (with two or three year curricula). The …
