Portrayals Of Mental Illness And Physical Disability In 21st Century Children's Animation., Amy Sue Marie Miller

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

The objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of mental and physical disability in children's animation, and to understand image of mental or physical disability the animation portrayed. Three animated movies and one 61 episode animated series were coded for verbal references to mental illness and physical disability. Visual images and thematic elements portraying disability were also examined. All of the animations contained verbal as well as visual references to disability. Verbal references appeared with an average of 13.2 references per hour of animation. The connotations of these references often went against negative stereotypes of disability. These findings …

Is It The Thought That Counts? : Investigating Children's Understanding Of Helpfulness, Effort, And Utility., Danielle Mccarty Dec 2014

Is It The Thought That Counts? : Investigating Children's Understanding Of Helpfulness, Effort, And Utility., Danielle Mccarty

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

How do children consider helpfulness, specifically effort and utility, when evaluating potential informants? We tested preschoolers on three conditions, asking them to choose between a character high in both effort and utility and a character who acted with either 1) low effort and high utility, 2) high effort and low utility, or 3) low effort and no utility (removed from social contexts). The opposing characters provided conflicting information when labeling novel objects, and participants were asked which label they endorsed. They were then asked to choose which character was the more helpful, which worked harder, and which was nicer. We …

Comparative Analysis Of Varying Theoretical Frameworks In Argentine Music Therapy., Talia Girton Dec 2014

Comparative Analysis Of Varying Theoretical Frameworks In Argentine Music Therapy., Talia Girton

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

One of the most shocking cultural phenomena that American visitors to Argentina experience is the prevalence of psychoanalytic theory, thought, and practice. It is so embedded into the Argentine way of life that its terminology is sprinkled throughout their daily speech and the cost of regular therapy sessions is factored into the monthly budget along with food, rent, and clothing. The widespread use of psychoanalysis is especially confounding to those of us in the mental health care field in the United States, as the enthusiasm for psychoanalysis and Freudian theory has receded among the intellectual community largely because it is …

Building Reconciliation In Bosnia And Herzegovina : The Effects Of Ingroup Identification, Outgroup Trust, And Intergroup Forgiveness On Intergroup Contact Quantity., Branka Damjanovic

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

After the violent breakup of Yugoslavia, it was necessary to find a way for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s three main ethnic groups to live together again. The Dayton Peace Agreement was thought to be the answer. Signed in 1995, it provided a new framework for the country, establishing the Republika Srpska for the Serbs, the Brcko District as an autonomous region, and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was further divided into cantons between the Bosnian Croats and the Bosniaks. With such a political structure, it was of interest to survey the quantity of intergroup contact between the groups today, …

Sovereign Democracy : Russia's Response To The Color Revolutions., Sarah Fisher May 2014

Sovereign Democracy : Russia's Response To The Color Revolutions., Sarah Fisher

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

The Russian Federation developed very different ideologies on the concept of democracy. In 2006, Vladislav Surkov, the First Deputy of the Chief of the Russian Presidential Administration, coined the term “sovereign democracy”. This gave a name to the Russian form of “managed” democracy and introduced a Russian alternative to Western liberal democracy: Sovereign Democracy. It asserts that Russia is a democracy and this fact must never be questioned by any state or such action will be viewed by the Kremlin as unwanted intervention in its domestic affairs. The Kremlin reacted to the recent Color Revolutions in the former Soviet Bloc …

Kentucky Politics : Where Are All The Women?, Carrie Mattingly May 2014

Kentucky Politics : Where Are All The Women?, Carrie Mattingly

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

This paper seeks to uncover the reasons for the underrepresentation of women in politics, with a geographical emphasis on the state of Kentucky. The research question explored is, “Why do so few women run for political office?” Surveys of women currently enrolled in college and phone interviews with women serving in the Kentucky state legislature are used to investigate this question by testing two hypotheses. First, the tendency of women to avoid running for office in the first place may be attributed to either weak recruitment of women or lack of political ambition among women. Second, a female tendency to …

Epidemiology And Virulence Of Clostridium Difficile : An Evolutionary Perspective., Lindsey E. Hastings May 2014

Epidemiology And Virulence Of Clostridium Difficile : An Evolutionary Perspective., Lindsey E. Hastings

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

The emergence of virulent, antibiotic-resistant Clostridium difficile ribotypes over the past thirty years has greatly concerned both the medical and research communities. As of 2010, C. difficile has surpassed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) as a cause of nosocomial infections and is now found in both healthcare settings and outside communities in the United States. Attendant-borne transmission in hospitals has been associated with the evolution of increased virulence in other nosocomial pathogens, but evolutionary theory has yet to be applied to the epidemiology and virulence of C. difficile. Differences between nosocomial C. difficile infections (CDI) and community-associated CDI (CA-CDI) mortality and …

Examining The Effects Of Saccade Execution And Handedness On Proactive Interference., Montgomery A. Kroger May 2014

Examining The Effects Of Saccade Execution And Handedness On Proactive Interference., Montgomery A. Kroger

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

Proactive interference is the phenomenon by which previously-learned information impairs recall of more recently-learned information. The present experiment was conducted to investigate two factors that may affect the occurrence of proactive interference. The first of these factors is saccade execution. Saccade execution has been shown in numerous studies to improve performance on a wide range of memory tasks. The second factor was people’s consistency of handedness, a term referring to the strength of people’s tendency to use one hand (right or left) over the other. Although the results of the primary analyses were inconclusive, further exploration of the data led …

A Retrospective Study On The Effect Of Immunotherapy Treatment On Nasal Polyposis., Johanna Haejean Yun May 2014

A Retrospective Study On The Effect Of Immunotherapy Treatment On Nasal Polyposis., Johanna Haejean Yun

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

Inside the paranasal sinuses, multiple saclike masses protrude from the lining, blocking one’s sense of taste and smell, clogging one’s nose with nasal congestion, and causing a continuous runny nose with postnasal drip. This is a common case of nasal polyposis. Nasal polyposis affects up to four percent of the general population, making it one of the most common chronic diseases of the upper respiratory tract (Settipane 1996). Moreover, in cadaveric studies, the prevalence has been as high as 40% (Larson et al 1994). Nasal polyps commonly occur in adults over the age of 40, predominantly in males—with a 2:1 …

Interactions Between Human Neutrophils And Mycobacterium Smegmatis : A Comparative General Analysis., Irina Miralda May 2014

Interactions Between Human Neutrophils And Mycobacterium Smegmatis : A Comparative General Analysis., Irina Miralda

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

Mycobacteria smegmatis is an abundant soil and water inhabitant with which humans are continuously in contact. Despite the fact that it is typically considered non-‐pathogenic, a few rare cases of M. smegmatis-‐caused infections have been reported and it has been shown that M. smegmatis is able to modulate inflammatory responses in macrophages. Neutrophils are the innate immune system’s first line of centralized defense against invading microbes, especially the frequently encountered M. smegmatis. However, very little information is known of the mechanism by which neutrophils eliminate environmental bacteria. In this study, the hypothesis that M. smegmatis regulates neutrophil functional responses, and …

Women's Activism And Social Networks In Post-Genocide Rwanda., Michelle Cecelia Marie Fox May 2014

Women's Activism And Social Networks In Post-Genocide Rwanda., Michelle Cecelia Marie Fox

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

Following the 1994 genocide the social networks of many Rwandan women changed. The loss of kin, particularly men, left many women needing new sources of social and material support. Beginning in the early 1990s the international development and aid community recognized the need to integrate gender analysis in their work and began to focus on women’s activism and efforts to improve the position of women in the supposed developing world. Using social network data and structured interview data gathered in Rwanda in June and July 2013 from 30 women, this study attempts to answer the question: Do women who were …

Microgenomic Approaches To Identify Clinically Relevant Gene Signatures That Discriminate Histologic Types Of Breast Carcinomas., Sean Thomas Butterbaugh May 2014

Microgenomic Approaches To Identify Clinically Relevant Gene Signatures That Discriminate Histologic Types Of Breast Carcinomas., Sean Thomas Butterbaugh

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

Background: Breast cancer presents itself in a variety of histologic types, and the two most common types are invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) and invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC). Based on comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) analyses, ILC is more closely related to low grade IDC than it is to intermediate and high grade IDC. Results from the BIG 1-98 trial demonstrate that post-menopausal women who are affected with estrogen receptor positive (ER+) ILC or luminal B (high grade) IDC experience a greater magnitude of benefit when they are treated with the aromatase inhibitor (AI) letrozole compared to treatment with the antiestrogen tamoxifen. …

The Human Immune Response To The Flagellins Of Burkholderia Dolosa., Molly Mcdonald May 2014

The Human Immune Response To The Flagellins Of Burkholderia Dolosa., Molly Mcdonald

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most commonly inherited lethal disorder in Caucasian populations. Chronic bacterial infection both decreases lung function and lowers the quality of the CF patient’s life. In one of the most recent CF epidemics, Burkholderia dolosa, an organism previously uncharacterized as an epidemic strain, infected over forty patients and led to the death of over seven patients at Children’s Hospital Boston. Preliminary research revealed that this strain of B. dolosa possesses genes for two distinct types of flagella, which is uncommon in bacterial pathogens. In this study we examine the interaction of human cells and B. dolosa, …

Graphic Design In The United States Targeting Hispanic Consumers., Chelsea Vaal May 2014

Graphic Design In The United States Targeting Hispanic Consumers., Chelsea Vaal

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

One in six United States citizens (almost seventeen percent of the population) identifies themselves as Hispanic.1 As this demographic continues to grow in numbers and expand its influence on the country, it is worth exploring how to better target this audience. Many advertising and design agencies are already reaching out to U.S. Latinos, but are they doing so effectively? Although more companies are attempting to reach out to this demographic, their attempts may be unsuccessful. Understanding what makes these advertisements successful or unsuccessful can be extremely effective in determining how to better target the Hispanic market. An analysis of Hispanic …

Developing A Cardiomyocyte Proliferation Probe Utilizing Non-Degradable Ckap2., Suraj Kannan May 2014

Developing A Cardiomyocyte Proliferation Probe Utilizing Non-Degradable Ckap2., Suraj Kannan

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

Currently, one of the biggest controversies in the field of cardiac regenerative medicine revolves around the ability of cardiomyocytes to proliferate. In contrast to the long-held hypothesis that the heart is terminally differentiated, post-mitotic organ, some studies have suggested that the heart is capable of undergoing limited regeneration following injury. Others have reported induction of cardiomyocyte proliferation following various treatments, mostly in vitro. Conventional tools such as BrdU labeling fail to distinguish between mitotic events and other phenomena such as endoreduplication or poly-nucleation, thus making it difficult to assess cardiomyocyte proliferation. The present study presents a novel and innovative way …

Infall As A Function Of Position And Molecular Tracer In Dense Cores., Jared Alan Keown May 2014

Infall As A Function Of Position And Molecular Tracer In Dense Cores., Jared Alan Keown

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

The standard model of prestellar core collapse suggests that this process works from the inside and moves outwards, with the fastest motions at the center. The relative abundances of many molecules also vary within cores, with certain molecules found only in specific regions characterized by narrow ranges of temperature and density. These characteristics lead to the hypothesis that the observed infall speeds in starless cores depend on both the position of the observations and the molecular tracer chosen. By measuring line emission at multiple positions across a core using an array of tracer molecules, one can determine whether these theoretical …
