Screening For Severe Mental Illness In A Correctional Setting Using The Brief Jail Mental Health Screening Tool, Stephanie Kohl Jan 2022

Screening For Severe Mental Illness In A Correctional Setting Using The Brief Jail Mental Health Screening Tool, Stephanie Kohl

DNP Projects

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Prisoners who are detained in jails and detention centers have higher rates of Severe Mental Illness (SMI) compared to the general population. However, SMI is often unidentified in this population, largely due to lack of assessment using effective SMI screening tools and lack of knowledge among prison staff about the prevalence of SMI and the importance of identification in the correctional setting. Prisoners with SMI often act out violently against others and themselves. Current standard practice for SMI screening varies significantly across jails. Many jails use standard medical questionnaires which help obtain a brief medical history but often …

Lee Ware, Tamara Belcher, Franceska Mehmeti, Eric B. Higgins, Robert Sprang, Cody Williams, Jamie L. Studts, Christina R. Studts

Ophthalmology and Visual Science Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Recommended annual diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening for people with diabetes has low rates in the USA, especially in underserved populations. Telemedicine DR screening (TDRS) in primary care clinics could expand access and increase adherence. Despite this potential, studies have observed high variability in TDRS rates among clinics and over time, highlighting the need for implementation supports. Previous studies of determinants of TDRS focus on patients' perspectives, with few studies targeting upstream multi-level barriers and facilitators. Addressing this gap, this qualitative study aimed to identify and evaluate multi-level perceived determinants of TDRS in Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), to inform …

Rates Of Diabetes Screening In Kentucky Before And After Implementation Of The Affordable Care Act (Aca), Cory Reinert Jan 2021

Rates Of Diabetes Screening In Kentucky Before And After Implementation Of The Affordable Care Act (Aca), Cory Reinert

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as “diabetes”, is currently at epidemic proportions in the United States as its prevalence has drastically increased over the past several decades. The percentage of Americans with diagnosed diabetes has risen from 0.93 percent of the population in 1958 to 10.5 percent in 2018 (ADA, 2021). Diabetes also impacts record numbers of Kentucky residents.

Regular screening for those considered at-risk can encourage patients to implement lifestyle modifications, pharmacological therapy, or other interventions earlier in the course of disease. This can help prevent or delay onset of T2D and can reduce diabetes-related complications in those who …

Monitoring Opioid Use In Cancer Survivors: Implementation Of Screening, Brief Intervention, And Referral To Treatment (Sbirt) In A Clinical Setting, Jennifer M. Dolly Prothro

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Kentucky is a disparate state, ranking as one of the top states in incidence, prevalence, and mortality for both opioid use disorders (OUD) and cancer. Due to the high volume of both diseases in the state, there is a rising concern about the overlap of these two populations. Cancer and its’ treatment are known to cause chronic pain, defined as daily pain lasting 3 months or longer. Generally, chronic pain patients of any type are known to experience higher rates of opioid misuse (21-28%) and opioid dependence (8-12%) than the general population (4.1%, 0.9% respectively). The risk of OUD must …

Evaluation Of Depression Screening By Providers For Adult Patients With Type 2 Diabetes In Primary Care, Kristy M. Bryant

DNP Projects

BACKGROUND: Depression in adults with type 2 diabetes can lead to non-adherence to self-management behaviors and treatment recommendations, and ultimately worse health outcomes. Currently, only 50% of adult patients with type 2 diabetes treated in the primary care setting are screened for depression. Without screening for depression, a diagnosis of depression and subsequent treatment is likely to be missed and the patient is more likely to experience worse health outcomes and worse quality of life.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate impact of provider education on improving screening rates for depression in adult patients with type 2 …

Effects Of The Affordable Care Act On Health Behaviors After Three Years, Charles J. Courtemanche, James Marton, Benjamin Ukert, Aaron Yelowitz, Daniela Zapata Apr 2018

Effects Of The Affordable Care Act On Health Behaviors After Three Years, Charles J. Courtemanche, James Marton, Benjamin Ukert, Aaron Yelowitz, Daniela Zapata

Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers

This paper examines the impacts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) – which substantially increased insurance coverage through regulations, mandates, subsidies, and Medicaid expansions – on behaviors related to future health risks after three years. Using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and an identification strategy that leverages variation in pre-ACA uninsured rates and state Medicaid expansion decisions, we show that the ACA increased preventive care utilization along several dimensions, but also increased risky drinking. These results are driven by the private portions of the law, as opposed to the Medicaid expansion. We also conduct subsample analyses by …
