New Input And Output Risk Management Strategies For Livestock Producers, Brian K. Coffey Jan 2001

New Input And Output Risk Management Strategies For Livestock Producers, Brian K. Coffey

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Backgounding beef cattle is an inherently risky venture. Producers faceproduction risks as well as marketing risks. If a backgrounding operation is to be viable, these risks should be addressed and effectively managed. While some effective riskmanagement tools are currently available to livestock producers, some other potentiallyuseful risk management tools, for various reasons, have been previously unavailable. Two such tools which could help livestock producers achieve the overall goal ofmanaging net income risk are a program for managing feed ingredient nutrient and pricevariability in the selection of minimum cost feed rations and government subsidizedlivestock price insurance.Due to lack of data and limited computational …

Modeling And Fabrication Of Lightweight, Deformable Mirrors Subjected To Discrete Loading, Michael E. Roche Jan 2001

Modeling And Fabrication Of Lightweight, Deformable Mirrors Subjected To Discrete Loading, Michael E. Roche

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The push towards larger diameter space telescope mirrors has caused the space industry to look at lightweight, deformable alternatives to the traditional monolithic mirror. One possible solution to the dilemma is to use the piezoelectric properties of certain materials to create a lightweight, deformable mirror. Current piezoelectric deformable mirror designs use individual actuators, creating an immensely complex system as the mirrors increase in size. The objective of this thesis is to aid in the design and development of lightweight, deformable mirrors for use in space based telescopes. Two topics are considered to aid this development. A doubly curved, lightweight, bimorph …

Impact Of Season And Heat Stress On Somatic Cell Counts, Brent A. Broaddus Jan 2001

Impact Of Season And Heat Stress On Somatic Cell Counts, Brent A. Broaddus

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Infection data were obtained monthly from June, 1999 to September, 2000 at the University ofKentucky dairy. Quarter foremilk samples were collected for bacteriological determination andsomatic cell counts (SCC). The Livestock Stress Index (LSI) estimated heat stress and is calculatedby combination of temperature and humidity. For uninfected quarters the geometric mean SCC was29,000 cells/ml. For infected quarters the geometric mean SCC was 213,000 cells/ml. Coagulasenegativestaphylococci (CNS) infections comprised 61 percent of the total infected quarters with ageometric mean SCC of 155,000 cells/ml. Staphylococcus aureus infected quarters had a geometricmean SCC of 680,000 cells/ml. There were no significant correlations between log SCC …

Diversity In Hunter-Gatherer Landscapes In The North American Midcontinent, Victor Dominic Thompson Jan 2001

Diversity In Hunter-Gatherer Landscapes In The North American Midcontinent, Victor Dominic Thompson

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The thesis examines changes in hunter-gatherer land-use along lower Cypress Creek, atributary of the Green River located in west-central Kentucky. Presented, are the results of the firstthree years of site survey and museum work conducted by the Cypress Creek Archaeological Project.Analysis of site location and hafted bifaces suggests that, throughout the Holocene, increasingemphasis was placed on certain locations and areas of the landscape. Comparison of the CypressCreek study area with other areas of Archaic research indicate that land-use was highly variable inboth space and time across the North American midcontinent.

Cyberspace Invades The First Amendment: Where Do We Go From Here?, Dollie Deaton Jan 2001

Cyberspace Invades The First Amendment: Where Do We Go From Here?, Dollie Deaton

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Long before our nation was created, European Countries acknowledged the importance of freespeech. Despite this, Great Britain later denied this right to the New England Colonies. Over thelast two centuries many battles have been fought to make freedom of speech an inalienable right tobe shared by all. A good portion of these battles have been fought in courtrooms. Judge andSupreme Court justices have dealt with issues ranging from what is a public figure to what isindecent speech. Many of these issues are not found in the original text of the Constitution. This hasforced the judges to devise tests to determine …

Automatic Image To Model Alignment For Photo-Realistic Urban Model Reconstruction, Mike Partington Jan 2001

Automatic Image To Model Alignment For Photo-Realistic Urban Model Reconstruction, Mike Partington

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

We introduce a hybrid approach in which images of an urban scene are automatically alignedwith a base geometry of the scene to determine model-relative external camera parameters. Thealgorithm takes as input a model of the scene and images with approximate external cameraparameters and aligns the images to the model by extracting the facades from the images andaligning the facades with the model by minimizing over a multivariate objective function. Theresulting image-pose pairs can be used to render photo-realistic views of the model via texturemapping.Several natural extensions to the base hybrid reconstruction technique are also introduced. Theseextensions, which include vanishing point …

Implementation Costs Of Kentucky's Erosion Control Best Management Practices For Skid Trails, Bennett Scott Shouse Jan 2001

Implementation Costs Of Kentucky's Erosion Control Best Management Practices For Skid Trails, Bennett Scott Shouse

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This paper describes a study designed to determine average labor and machine times required to implement erosion control and revegetation best management practices (BMPs) for skid trails in Kentucky. Labor and machine activities were recorded for 14,400 feet of skid trail on 10 nonindustrial private logging sites. Water bar construction and reshaping activities such as filling ruts and berm removal were filmed continuously with a video camera and then analyzed using time-motion study techniques. Labor activities for revegetation such as seeding and application of fertilizer were also timed. The average total machine time for retirement activities per 1000 feet was …

Piv Measurements Of Channel Flow With Multiple Rib Arrangements, Harald Roclawski Jan 2001

Piv Measurements Of Channel Flow With Multiple Rib Arrangements, Harald Roclawski

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

A model of a gas turbine blade cooling channel equipped with turbulators and a backward facing step geometry was examined. Up to four turbulators oriented cross-stream and inclined 45° to the flow direction were mounted in the channel. The blockage ratio b/H of the turbulators and the height h/H of the backward facing step was 0:125 and 0:14 respectively. The number of turbulators as well as their size was varied. In a preliminary investigation, hot-wire and pressure measurements were taken for three different Reynolds numbers (5,000, 12,000, 18,000)in the center plane of the test section. Subsequently, particle image …

St. Mary Of Egypt In Bl Ms Cotton Otho B. X: New Textual Evidence For An Old English Saint's Life, Linda M. Cantara Jan 2001

St. Mary Of Egypt In Bl Ms Cotton Otho B. X: New Textual Evidence For An Old English Saint's Life, Linda M. Cantara

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Scholarship of the anonymous Old English prose Life of St. Mary of Egypt ranges from source studies and linguistic analyses to explorations of Anglo-Saxon female sexuality and comparisons to saints' lives translated by the monk Ælfric, but all of these studies have been based on either the text extant in BL MS Cotton Julius E. vii or on W. W. Skeat's edition of the Julius manuscript, Ælfric's Lives of Saints (1881-1900). There is, however, an as yet unedited fragmentary copy of the Old English Mary of Egypt in BL MS Cotton Otho B. x, a manuscript severely damaged by fire …

Shadow Generation Based On Re Loops And Their Angular Representations, Khageshwar Thakur Jan 2001

Shadow Generation Based On Re Loops And Their Angular Representations, Khageshwar Thakur

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The initial attempt was to find efficient technique to identify shadow plylgons in the shadow-volume based shadow generation algorithm. It was observed that shadows correspond to loops of ridge edges (REs). By identifying all the non-overlapping RE loops of a 3D object, one finds all the shadow polygons and, consequently, all the shadows it generates on other objects as well as shadows it generates on itself. This, however, requires extensive edge-edge intersection tests. It was subsequently realized that by storing the angular representations of the RE looks in a look up table, one can avoid the need of decomposing RE loops …

The analyses focus on form, instrumentation, texture and harmony, melody, tonality, and rhythm. Each piece is examined on its own and their significant features are compared.

A Farm-Level Analysis Of Specialty Crop Production In Kentucky, Daniel C. Green Jan 2001

A Farm-Level Analysis Of Specialty Crop Production In Kentucky, Daniel C. Green

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Special purpose crops are those with traits designed to meet the specificdemands of an end user. A mean-variance (E-V) mathematical programming modeland sensitivity analysis are used to quantify and discuss the potential net returns andrisk associated with the adoption of special purpose crops at the farm level.Furthermore, a spreadsheet-based decision aid is developed to assist farmers in thedecision of whether or not to produce high-oil corn on their operation. Results from this study indicate that the profitability of high-oil corn is verymarginal, dependent upon the ability of the crop to yield as well as conventional corn, and gain significant premiums. The potential …

From Cambodia To The United States: The Disassembly, Reconstruction, And Redefinition Of Khmer Identity, Denise Clark Lewis

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

In this thesis I describe Khmers' negotiations of circumstances surroundingthe disassembly, reconstruction, and redefinition of Khmer identity fromtheir homeland in Cambodia to a traditional Khmer village recreated in theUnited States. Using a framework derived from a constructivist perspective,I have placed processes of negotiation and identity transformation withinthe lived context of Khmers' lives. Thus, a holistic understanding of theinterrelatedness of multiple changes in Khmerness is made possible.Ethnographic data collected between 1997 and 1999, through participantobservationand interviews, inform this study. Findings from this studyreveal three levels of identity transformation as told by members of a smallKhmer village established along the U. S. …
