Perceptions And Outcomes Of Older Adults Following A Cancer Prevention Educational Seminar, Lori Boright, Sara Arena, Christopher M. Wilson, Andrew Boardman, Kevin Chen, Marcel Soleimani, Hannah Wickersham
Oncology Rehabilitation in Practice
Introduction: 19.9 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million cancer deaths occurred globally in 2023. 90-95% of cancers originate from environment and lifestyle choices. Age is a prominent non-modifiable risk factor for cancer development, so it is essential that older adults are informed on lifestyle factors affecting their cancer risk. Physical therapists (PTs) play a major role in educating and advocating for healthy cancer preventive behaviors. The purpose of this study was to describe outcomes of an educational intervention relating to cancer prevention in community-dwelling older adults.
Methods: Investigators developed and delivered a cancer prevention educational seminar relevant to exercise, …
Avoiding Stereotypes: Utilizing A Flipped Framework Of Hofstede’S Cultural Dimensions For Teacher-Student Intercultural Awareness, Maha Azzazi
Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
Cultural differences are increasingly being analyzed in a globalized world to minimize conflict and optimize successful intercultural interactions. Among the most used cultural frameworks is Hofstede's cultural dimensions. This framework has, however, been criticized as stereotyping nations and individuals from different countries instead of raising awareness and minimizing cultural conflicts. The paper will utilize Hofstede's cultural dimensions to discuss the differences and similarities of cultural behavior within these dimensions. Therefore, a framework will be developed to outline differences in cultural behaviors for educators and students, which can be analyzed on a case-by-case basis without intersecting with nationality and country of …

Innovative Pandemic Community-Based Student Learning: Development Of Remote Experiential Learning, Amy Christopher
Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
Objective: Review and reflect upon innovative experiential learning and student volunteer hours during remote isolation of pandemic times.
Introduction: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, experiential learning for U.S. university graduate-level health care professional programs struggled to find clinical rotation sites and provide students in the didactic curricular phase opportunities to apply health education outside of the classroom. Many healthcare sites and community health screening events were prohibited during an extended period of time due to pandemic isolation. As a health educator, exploration of remote, independent, and virtual experiential learning took creative planning to ensure students were able to apply …

Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
The focus of this reflective commentary is building authentic relationships with a wider variety of community partners toward greater collective impact and equity in community experiential learning. During my time as Clinical Coordinator in the University of Dayton undergraduate music therapy program, we have added 11 new practicum placement sites with one additional starting Spring 2024. The addition of several of these sites stemmed from music therapy faculty discussions about the desire to serve a greater diversity of clientele in our music therapy practicum courses and expand learning opportunities for music therapy students. In this paper, I describe our decision …

Cross-Curricular Opportunities Through Libraries, Librarians, And Instruction, Elizabeth Grauel, Erik Ziedses Des Plantes
Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
The changing landscape of higher education and increasing demand for multi-skilled employees in today’s workforce have exposed opportunities for cross-disciplinary and cross-curricular engagements in university classrooms. At the same time, budgetary constraints and shifting institutional structures present challenges to adopting and integrating such holistic approaches to research, teaching, and learning. This paper explores the connective function of academic libraries on university campuses, describing librarians’ roles as curricular and pedagogical partners to teaching faculty and facilitators of interdepartmental research. Through a review of literature and the presentation and analysis of a case study on co-taught library instruction sessions, librarians and teaching …

Beyond Boundaries: Third Space Leadership In Schools, Corinne Brion
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
This case study is relevant to practicing and prospective leaders because it raises issues related to third space leadership. I define third space leadership as the spaces/places between school and home, school and before or after school programs, school, and extra-curricular activities, such as the commute in a school bus. Third space leadership is grounded in adaptive leadership, cultural proficiency, equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. This teaching case study exposes educational administrators to a holistic approach to leadership that includes the in-between spaces that are integral parts and moments of students’ educational journeys. The Teaching Notes outline key concepts on …

Student Exposure To Andhii Improves Confidence With Applying The Nutrition Care Process, Casey Colin, Tad Campbell, Michel Harris, Avalon Mustafa, Lindsay Woodcock
Journal of Dietetic Education
The objective of this study was to explore if using ANDHII improves NCP confidence and documentation quality. This quasi-experimental trial was conducted with n = 43 undergraduate dietetic students. NCP confidence was measured before and after a traditional case study, and after an ANDHII case study. Documentation quality was measured using a validated quality audit tool. Confidence increased from time 1 to time 2 (p = 0.008), and from time 2 to time 3 (p = 0.003). Documentation quality was higher for the ANDHII documentation compared to the non-ANDHII documentation (p < 0.001) but lower when compared to the traditional ADIME (p = 0.03). Familiarizing students with ANDHII improved NCP confidence. Opportunities exist to improve ANDHII functionality and positively impact documentation quality.

Journal of Dietetic Education
Purpose: Although program directors consider several measures when assessing dietetic program applicants, grade point average (GPA) is often the most highly weighted. However, its ability to predict success in the entry-level registration examination for dietitians (RD exam) is unknown. Our objective was to determine how well GPA predicted first-time success in the RD exam. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of the associations among academic variables: pre-admission GPA (Overall- GPA), didactic program in dietetics GPA (DPD-GPA), and the type of degree (bachelor's versus master’s) with first-time RD exam scores across seven cohorts from three DI programs (N = 408). Results: …

Learning At Diabetes Camp: Experiential And Interprofessional Opportunities For Dietetics Students, Mallory Mount, Mary Kathryn Gould
Journal of Dietetic Education
Diabetes camp is helpful in providing hands-on learning experiences and interprofessional learning opportunities through immersive experiences. Currently, there is little research comparing the changes in knowledge and perception during experiential learning in dietetics students at a residential diabetes camp. This longitudinal qualitative case study explored the knowledge, perceptions, confidence, and empathy gained by four dietetics students during experiential learning at the camp. Qualitative research methods (interviews, observations, "photovoice," journals, and focus groups) were used to explore and understand participants’ experiences of hands-on involvement with type one diabetes, and what they learned at camp that cannot be learned in a classroom. …

Journal of Dietetic Education
In this issue of the Journal of Dietetic Education, we share a special section for interprofessional education (IPE). The articles highlight potential avenues for interprofessional education in dietetics programs and continuing education for dietetics professionals. Each article offers insight into the landscape of dietetic education and the need for IPE. Dietetic students learn from IPE experiences in their programs. However, additional IPE occurs through outside experiences and throughout a dietitian’s career.
