#Badgedtohire Final Report, Brian Laduca, Education Design Lab, Excalibur Education Group

IACT Reports, Publications and Resources

Education Design Lab, through professional input and focus groups, developed eight badges that address the instruction of “soft skills” to postsecondary students. With the emergence of alternative credentialing and badging, Education Design Lab wanted to contribute to the evidence of student confidence differences as attributed to completing the badge content as expressed on their resume, interview, and through application or example. Postsecondary institutions were engaged in this evaluation across the nation and allowed for three differing viewpoints on badge importance and expression – student, instruction, and employer.

Opinion: Is The Privilege That Comes With A Porch Worth It?, Tori Miller

Brother Frank Ruhlman, S.M., Award of Excellence for Literary Achievement

"Where are you living this year?" It's the age old ice-breaker question that every UD student knows all too well. When anyone thinks of UD, the student neighborhood filled with colorful houses is one of the first images that pops into the mind. Porches at UD symbolize more than just a housing option; it symbolizes a lifestyle that only the people who work the hardest get to have, right?

What happens to those who work hard collecting UD's controversial PATH points only to receive their last housing choice or no house at all? Why have students been leaning more towards …

Media Portrayal Of The Police Resulting In Fatal Citizen Interactions Apr 2022

Media Portrayal Of The Police Resulting In Fatal Citizen Interactions

Stander Symposium Projects

Technology has made news media a universal phenomenon in covering police-citizen interactions. Critics have pointed out biases in their reporting. However, this speculation has yet to be tested empirically. The current study aimed to address this gap by using content analysis to shed light on the media’s dialect when reporting fatal police-citizen interactions. Using content analysis and convenience sampling, the study identified the first 10 articles related to four high-profile cases (i.e., Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, and Casey Goodsen Jr.) from three news sites that encompassed media value in relation to political bias and reliability in relation to …

Mental Health Among Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (Rotc) Cadets

Stander Symposium Projects

There is little research about the subgroup of Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets, especially none that focus on their mental health and the coping strategies they use to adjust to both the college atmosphere and military culture. Therefore, research will be conducted on Army ROTC cadets across the nation to better understand how the added pressure, commitments, and responsibilities affect cadets. The purpose of this project is to compare the mental health of Army ROTC cadets to national mental health trends among the general college student population to further explore some of the differences in this subgroup and learn …

Analyzing Connection Barriers Among Parents And Adjudicated Juveniles In A Midwestern Treatment Center Apr 2022

Analyzing Connection Barriers Among Parents And Adjudicated Juveniles In A Midwestern Treatment Center

Stander Symposium Projects

Parents of adjudicated juveniles face numerous issues while attempting to maintain communication with youth offenders in treatment facilities. The current study seeks to highlight the various barriers these parents endure. Although previous research has uncovered some of these limitations by analyzing juvenile offenders through surveys and observations, little has been examined from the perspective of the parents. Understanding the parents' experiences of barriers or challenges in their attempt to communicate with their adjudicated children has the potential for contact changes within juvenile correctional settings. A convenience sample of 90 parents of adjudicated male juveniles in a treatment facility was surveyed …

Using Phenomenology To Explore Trauma Identification Within A Midwestern Juvenile Diversion Program

Stander Symposium Projects

Trauma among juveniles is a prevalent issue within the juvenile justice system. Juvenile diversion programs may play a role in addressing this trauma. However, juvenile diversion programs use different therapeutic approaches raising questions as to how they might identify trauma. The current study aimed to understand how professionals within a Midwestern juvenile diversion program believe they identify trauma amongst their clients. Using a phenomenological approach, four semi-structured interviews using purposive non-probability sampling were conducted. The analyses included transcribing the interviews verbatim, memoing, initial coding, categories, and thematic analyses. An inter-rater reliability check is performed through a comparison of categories between …

Inmate Mental Health: The Impact Of Prison Programs On Inmate Mental Well-Being Apr 2022

Inmate Mental Health: The Impact Of Prison Programs On Inmate Mental Well-Being

Stander Symposium Projects

Inmate mental health is often overlooked; however, the rights and mental well-being of any individual under the government's custody are crucial to understanding the current state of our correctional system. Within this secondary data analysis of a national sample of inmates, the research question at hand is: Does the type of job assignment during incarceration impact an inmate's overall mental well-being? In an attempt to better understand the question, a multivariate linear regression test was conducted to compare individual work assignments such as farming and janitorial duties with different types of feelings such as depression and anxiety. The results found …

Covid-19 Isolation Effects On Anxiety/Depression Levels Apr 2022

Covid-19 Isolation Effects On Anxiety/Depression Levels

Stander Symposium Projects

Solitary confinement in the corrections system is a prolific issue that has been the focus of debate for years. However, such isolation has been difficult for the average person to understand since the majority of the population has never thoroughly experienced any level of isolation until the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic. While research into the effects of COVID-19 on mental health is still in its preliminary stages, there may be evidence that this isolation has resulted in negative impacts. Accordingly, there is now a growing interest into whether this isolation affected college students’ mental health, specifically their levels of …

A Comparative Analysis Of Federal And State Sex Trafficking Laws And Legal Framework

Stander Symposium Projects

This research explores the current sex trafficking laws in the United States. Sex trafficking is a current form of modern slavery because people engage in sexual activity by force, coericon or fraud. To combat this issue the federal law Trafficking Victims Protection Act was created to prevent and protect victims while prosecuting sex traffickers. The safe harbor law was also created which protects minors from being treated as criminals by the criminal justice system. The problem is that the law differs from state to state. The current study examined how states having different interpretation of sex trafficking laws can make …

It is important to investigate how this stress affects officer behavior and more importantly how it affects their ability to do their jobs. For the purposes of this study, a small police department was offered a short survey that measured the amount of stress the officer has endured inside and outside of work. Addressing the issue of the impact that stress has on …

Substance Use And Crime Rates

Stander Symposium Projects

In this study, I use a combination of existing research and the collection of survey data from college-aged participants to explain the relationship between substance use and the commission of various crimes throughout the college years. The study includes participants who anonymously reported their history of drug and alcohol use within the last year. This information was then compared with violent and property crimes that were self-reported by the respondents. The association between substance use and various crimes committed while under the influence showed a strong positive correlation. My findings highlight the importance of substance use and abuse as a …
