Administrators' Understanding Of The Federal Special Education Mandate: Individuals With Disabilities Education Act., William R. Nelson, Carolyn Ridenour
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
With the passage of the Education for all Handicapped Children Act (PL 94-142) in 1975, the United States Congress sought to provide educational opportunity to all children. In 1990, with added amendments, the law was renamed the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Turnbull reported in 1993 that Congress had found approximately one-half of the nation's eight million children with disabilities were not receiving an appropriate education and about one million were receiving no education at all. Clearly, in the past two decades since the passage of the Education for all Handicapped Children Act school administrators have, on a daily …
Desert Mothers: The Differential Treatment Of Female Saints Of The Desert, Barbara M. Ragan
Desert Mothers: The Differential Treatment Of Female Saints Of The Desert, Barbara M. Ragan
University of Dayton Review
The early Christians were attracted to the desert as a place where they could become more spiritually keen by practicing their beliefs and communing with God in solitude. The earliest desert dweller who fled to the desert to try to perfect his spirituality was, according to Ethel Rolt-Wheeler, St. Antony the Great who lived from 251-356 (5). Helen Waddell identifies the "founder of this way of living" as Paul of Thebes (29-30). St. Paul of Thebes was 23 years older than St. Antony, and they met at the end of St. Paul's life (Waddell 32, 34-39). Regardless of the identity …
Big Brother Is Watching You: Dorothy Wordsworth's Alfoxden And Grasmere Journals, Lisa Tyler
Big Brother Is Watching You: Dorothy Wordsworth's Alfoxden And Grasmere Journals, Lisa Tyler
University of Dayton Review
The chief observation-and critique- that virtually everyone makes regarding Dorothy Wordsworth's journals is that they display an alarming absence of subjectivity. Critics use almost identical terms to describe this quality in the journals: Bruce Bawer notes that "perhaps what is most arresting about them is their utter unself-consciousness" (30); Ernest de Selin court describes her journals as "entirely without self-consciousness" (78). Margaret Homans notes "Dorothy's tendency to omit a central or prominent self" (Women 73). Richard Fadem comments, "If Dorothy is notable, as every biographer agrees, for her utter selflessness, she is also remarkable for the absence of a clearly …

Teaching 'At Risk' Inner City Ninth Grade Students Reading Comprehension Skills Utilizing Newsstand Publications, Francis A. Groach
Teaching 'At Risk' Inner City Ninth Grade Students Reading Comprehension Skills Utilizing Newsstand Publications, Francis A. Groach
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
High school is but another obstacle for many of the inner-city youth this writer sees, on any given day, during any given school year. 'At risk' is the tag these students carry with them through the ninth grade. They are 'at risk' because they do not read well. Some of them read at levels considered average for third graders. Most of these ninth grade 'at risk' students do not comprehend what they read and because they do not, their ability to succeed in other classes is limited. The challenge for the researcher, therefore, was to take his classroom and turn …
