There’S A Whole Lotta Rhythm Goin’ Round: How Funk Shaped U.S. Copyright, Katherine Leo
There’S A Whole Lotta Rhythm Goin’ Round: How Funk Shaped U.S. Copyright, Katherine Leo
Content Presented at the First and Second Dayton Funk Symposia
Rooted in stylized grooves and lineages of musical borrowing, funk can often seem to exist at the periphery of copyright protection. Its influence on Hip-Hop and R&B, particularly through collage techniques involving digital samples, contributed to a rise in the early twenty-first century of infringement disputes. How have these cases shaped copyright protection of music? After a gloss of federal copyright law, this presentation surveys landmark lawsuits involving funk songs and their impact on later cases. Through its interdisciplinary investigation, this presentation reveals how funk cases proved that musical style offers critical context to legal evaluations of musical similarity and …

Pour Some Water On Me: Prince And The Ohio Players, De Angela Duff
Content Presented at the First and Second Dayton Funk Symposia
In Prince’s incomplete and posthumous memoir, The Beautiful Ones, The Ohio Players is referenced four times. However, Prince’s love of The Ohio Players was evident, decades before the release of this book. Prince has covered Ohio Players’ classics, such as “Skin Tight,” “I Want To Be Free,” “Love Rollercoaster,” and “Heaven Must Be Like This,” in numerous rehearsals, shows, and after shows over the years. However, The Ohio Players are rarely discussed by music critics as one of Prince’s influences. This presentation will attempt to deconstruct why, while also exploring Prince’s funk roots and influences.

This presentation will discuss an honors thesis research project completed as an undergraduate music student at the University of Dayton. Titled “Traditional Funk: An Ethnographic, Historical, and Practical Study of Funk Music in Dayton, Ohio,” the thesis explores traditional funk style, Dayton’s musical history, and how funk music can be incorporated into music programs and curricula across Dayton area schools. During his student teaching semester, Vanden Eynden had an opportunity to teach a unit on Dayton funk to students at Springboro High School. This presentation will explore some of the findings from this project and share ideas for its future …

The Funk Mural on Land of Funk Way in Dayton was completed in 2018. There are, however, a few other artistic tributes to some of our Dayton Funk heroes, including the metal statue tribute to Roger Troutman and a mural to the Dayton Funk bands located on Germantown Street. Although these are just a few examples here in Dayton, there are also many images of "funk art" all over the world.

Throughout his career, Prince Rogers Nelson crossed many genres, pop, rock, punk, R&B, jazz, soul, and funk. He created funky jams from Erotic City to Housequake to Musicology. This presentation addresses an understudied and essential fact that Prince Rogers Nelson is funky. This presentation will outline his contribution to the funk genre through a study of his collaboration with funk legends, including The Time, George Clinton, Sly & The Family Stone, Larry Graham and Maceo Parker, Chaka Khan, Mavis Staples, and Rick James.
Funk And The Defunct Music Curriculum, Ed Sarath
Funk And The Defunct Music Curriculum, Ed Sarath
Content Presented at the First and Second Dayton Funk Symposia
What, if any, is the place of funk in a 21st century music curriculum in America? This talk responds to this question by situating funk with the context of what Jeff Pressing, in a seminal essay, calls “Black Atlantic Rhythm” (BAR). Pressing’s heading refers to the multitudinous and massively prominent body of rhythmic languages and practices that originated in Africa and took hold, and further evolved, through its various musical diasporas. I view Funk and Black Atlantic Rhythm as part of what I call “21st century” common practice rhythmic literacy, which I argue to exceed in importance Eurocanonic common practice …

What do you see when you look in the mirror? If you were on the other side looking back, in a land of opposites, how would your perception of reality be altered? Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There reflect the larger truths that underscore our social experience in this constantly changing nonsensical world. Journey with us through a wonderland of mystery and delight while exploring who we were, who we are, and who we are yet to become in this dramatic …

The Kilroys List 2020, selected play
October 20-23, 2021
Fitz Hall’s Black Box Theatre & Live-Streamed
The night after a queer bar outside of Tampa, Florida is vandalized, three twenty-something bartenders gather to grieve, rage, and above all, piece together the events of the night before. Fiery and poetic, Laced ferociously celebrates the spaces in which we find our truest selves. In a time of renewed culture wars against queer youth, this play centers the voices of those intersectional identities we should be listening to now.

Step down assessments are frequently used in clinical settings with the lateral step-down (LSD) and forward step-down (FSD) two common variations.
The LSD and FSD are both reliable and are commonly used for the assessment of lower extremity pathologies such as patellofemoral pain, anterior ligament reconstruction, and femoral acetabular impingement (1-7).
Step down kinematics can be influenced by reduced dorsiflexion mobility (8).
Previous studies have demonstrated altered movement quality in those with pathology during either the LSD or FSD (4,7).
However, no studies have directly compared the lower extremity movement patterns of the FSD and LSD, using either 3-dimensional (3D) …

The sarco/endoplasmic reticulum (SR/ER) calcium (Ca2+)-ATPase (SERCA) pump is a key regulator of intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis and subsequently essential for cell survival and function [1,2]. Neurons are no exception to this; intricate pathways involving SERCA-mediated Ca2+ signaling are implicated in brain pathophysiology. Several studies have indicated that dysregulation of SERCA pumps may be involved in the molecular mechanisms underlying debilitating brain diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, ischemia and alcoholism [1-3]. Thus, this family of P-type ATPases comprises an emerging molecular target for developing efficient pharmacotherapies. Interestingly, preclinical studies in rodents suggest that chronic pharmacological activation of …
Optical Dilatometry Measurements For The Quantification Of Sustainable Aviation Fuel Materials Compatibility, Shane Kosir
Optical Dilatometry Measurements For The Quantification Of Sustainable Aviation Fuel Materials Compatibility, Shane Kosir
Graduate Student Showcase
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) offers a near-term opportunity to reduce aviation’s greenhouse gas emissions. Currently-approved SAFs are limited to a maximum blend ratio with conventional jet fuel due to materials compatibility issues (i.e., O-ring volume swell). Specifically, aircraft have been found to leak significant quantities of fuel when volume swell is insufficient. Here, optical dilatometer measurements of volume swell for SAFs are reported. These measurements will serve to screen candidate SAFs at an early stage of the approval process. Optical dilatometry measurements were also coupled with two-dimensional gas chromatography data to predict volume swell withfuel.

Tep1 Regulates Yki Activity In Neural Stem Cells In Drosophila Glioma Model, Karishma Gangwani
Tep1 Regulates Yki Activity In Neural Stem Cells In Drosophila Glioma Model, Karishma Gangwani
Graduate Student Showcase
Glioblastoma is the most common form of malignant brain tumor with a poor prognosis. Using a Drosophila glioma model, we showed that the Drosophila Tep1 gene (human CD109) regulates Yki (human YAP/TAZ) via an evolutionarily conserved mechanism. Oncogenic signaling by the YAP/TAZ pathway occurs in cells that acquire CD109 expression. Loss of Tep1 caused a reduction in glioma growth. Further, Tep1 affects Yki mediated stem cell renewal in glioma, as reduction of Tep significantly decreases the number of neuroblasts in glioma. Thus, we identify Tep1-Yki interaction in the larval CNS that plays a key role in glioma growth and progression.
Toward A New Vision Of Catholicity For The Chinese Catholic Church, Huili Stout
Toward A New Vision Of Catholicity For The Chinese Catholic Church, Huili Stout
Graduate Student Showcase
The Vatican-China agreement has brought all the Chinese bishops into communion with the pope, but some believe that the Chinese church remains substantially divided. To overcome the present antagonism, I propose that the Chinese church explore more closely, through the resources of communion ecclesiology, the spiritual dimension of catholicity. In particular, Dumitru Stăniloae’s concept of ‘sobornicity’ may provide an inspiration by clarifying the foundation and source of Christian communion, by emphasizing the role of the Holy Spirit, and by encouraging a cosmic and eschatological openness in the church’s attitude to the world.
An Exploration Of Curriculum Implementation For Early-Career Public School Teachers During The Induction Process, Matthew Mesenger
An Exploration Of Curriculum Implementation For Early-Career Public School Teachers During The Induction Process, Matthew Mesenger
Graduate Student Showcase
My project was an action research study focused on ways to help the Brunswick City School District better support beginning teachers (those with less than five years’ experience) who are tasked with learning the district-assigned curricula. Tangential to the analysis was consideration of the fact that new teacher attrition has a major impact of student achievement. Findings from this qualitative study revealed six actionable takeaways that, collectively, can help improve the quality of instruction that new teachers give students while helping to retain those teachers for a longer period of time.
