The ethical debate about guns in America pivots around the themes of harmful consequences and individual liberty. Gun control advocates argue for greater legal control of guns on the grounds that such a policy would save lives. They envision a society ruled by an enlightened policy that seeks to minimize harm and maximize benefit for all. On the other hand, proponents of gun control shift the focus in the debate from consequences to individual liberty, which they elevate to a position of overriding value. New mechanistic philosophy has not examined explanations in ecology although they are based extensively on describing mechanisms responsible for phenomena under scrutiny. This chapter uses the example of research on the shrub Lonicera maackii (Amur honeysuckle) to scrutinize individual-level mechanisms that are generally accepted and used in ecology and confronts them with the minimal account of mechanisms. Individual-level mechanisms are for a phenomenon, are hierarchical, and absent entities play a role in their functioning. They are distinguished by the role played by properties in determining activities and organization. Each year, one out of three adults (> 65 years old) experiences a fall, resulting in fractures, head injuries, and even death. Falling is the leading cause of death from an injury and causes the greatest number of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma. Since balance and muscle performance decrease as one ages, it is vitally important to assess these factors as part of a comprehensive strategy to monitor and predict fall risk. The rate of game related basketball injuries is 2xs greater in professionals than collegiate players and the most common injuries occur in the lower extremity. Arch mechanics are often cited as a related factor and the Arch Height Index Measurement System (AHIMS) is a reliable and valid system for quantifying mobility. However, normative or comparative values for basketball athletes have not been reported.

The Foot Posture Index (FPI) is a screening tool used by clinicians to assess if the foot is pronated, neutral or supinated. It is intended to quantify foot position by assigning positive values to pronated attributes and negative values to supinated attributes. Three hindfoot and 3 forefoot attributes are scored. Although the FPI is valid and reliable, individual component scores may skew the composite score. Therefore, there lies a need to investigate the internal consistency of the FPI.

Individuals diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) often have an increased risk of falling. Additionally, many also have a fear of falling that all can affect balance confidence. Recent advancements in wearable sensor technology have made it possible to assess certain aspects of gait and balance in the clinical setting that were not possible previously. The information collected by sensors may be useful for identifying specific factors that contribute to falls and balance confidence in those with MS which in turn could help enhance treatment approaches.

Yoga improves a variety of impairments in typical pediatric populations: cardiovascular, neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, and pulmonary conditions, balance, strength, and flexibility. Yoga improves mindfulness in adult populations, and emerging evidence shows a similar effect among pediatric populations.

Individuals with dementia are at a high risk of functional decline and falling. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between cognition and functional performance in older adults with dementia participating in Goodwill Easter Seals adult day service programs. This data may be helpful in understanding how cognition may impact functional performance and fall risk.

Education and Health Care Services is one of the fastest growing employment sectors in the US. In this study we examine the relationship between it and nine S&P 500 sector ETF's plus SPY, a proxy for the S&P 500 Index. We test the hypothesis that Education and Healthcare employment growth co-varies directly with SPY and the nine sector ETF's. The period of analysis is 2009-2016 with monthly data used to construct the regression equations.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a common form of dementia and an age related progressive neurodegenerative disorder, manifests as memory loss and reduced cognitive ability. One of the hallmarks of AD is formation of the Amyloid-beta 42 (hereafter Aβ42) plaques, which triggers oxidative stress due to aberrant signaling and finally results in the death of neurons. However, the exact mechanism causing cell death is still not well understood. We misexpressed high levels of human Aβ42 protein in the developing fly retina, which mimics AD like neuropathology. Platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) are being explored as a potential therapeutic due to their ability to act as a catalyst and their high conductivity. However, in order to develop PtNPs for utilization in the medicinal field, their behavior and safety in a biological system must first be characterized. In addition to evaluating the traditional toxicological endpoints of cytotoxicity and stress response, this work sought to uncover if PtNPs induced an inflammatory response or modified critical signal transduction pathways in the human liver HepG2 model. The research aims to examine if men are similar to the literature provided about how young men act in the hookup culture. Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with no known cure to date. The disease is caused by the extra-cellular accumulation of amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) peptides, which results in neuronal death. We have developed transgenic Drosophila melanogaster (a.k.a fruit fly) model of AD where human Aβ42 peptide was misexpressed specifically in the Drosophila eye using the GAL4/UAS system. Our approach allows Aβ42 accumulation only in the differentiating photoreceptor neurons, which kills only the retinal neurons, and does not affect the reproductive ability as well as life span of flies. Control algorithms are used in almost all mechanical and electrical systems for controlling movements and activities. This includes robots, automobiles, aircrafts, industrial machines, and power systems. For mobile systems, the use of complex control algorithms – in particular adaptive control algorithms – would allow for much more refined performance. Unfortunately, these complex control algorithms are highly computationally intensive, requiring the use of high powered computers. This makes their use in mobile platforms (especially robots) almost impossible. Researchers and educators alike are interested in improving inductive learning, as instructional methods are greatly influenced by knowledge of how to present examples of category membership for later classification. Past research has shown that interleaved presentation, which involves the presentation of a member of one category followed by a member of another category, produces better recall when compared to blocked presentation, which involves the sequential presentation of all members of a single category before presenting all members of another category.
