Overactive Bladder: Shortcomings Of Current Diagnostic And Treatment Approaches And A New Etiological Paradigm, Nina L. Franzen
Overactive Bladder: Shortcomings Of Current Diagnostic And Treatment Approaches And A New Etiological Paradigm, Nina L. Franzen
Master's Theses
Aims: To examine the effectiveness of the current diagnostic and treatment approach of overactive bladder (OAB) and the relative impact of cognition on what is currently a bladder-centric condition. Methods: A review of the literature on OAB from the population to organ/brain level was conducted. The impact of age-induced bladder dysfunction via cognitive changes to sensory integration and attention control are discussed. Results: OAB uses bladder-centric terminology to represent a collection of symptoms with inconsistent and often unknown pathology. Proposed etiologies and therapeutic models for overactive bladder focus on the bladder organ, but evidence suggests that age-related degradation to inhibitory …

Aging And Identity In The Landscape Of The Mega-Casino, Joy Ciofi
Doctoral Dissertations
Casino gambling is becoming an increasingly popular activity among retirees in the surrounding communities. This project presents the results of two years of ethnographic fieldwork (2015-2017) with senior gamblers who regularly visit two of the United States’ largest mega-casino complexes. Although this form of recreation has generated significant public concern, I argue that the overwhelming majority of older adult gamblers do so responsibly, and also receive many benefits from their casino experiences. The abundance and variety of activities within these massive, all-inclusive facilities provides elderly and retired guests with the opportunity to make plans, socialize, and stay mentally and physically …
Exploratory Studies Of Microbiome Dysbiosis And Plasticity In Mice And Humans, Xin Zhou
Exploratory Studies Of Microbiome Dysbiosis And Plasticity In Mice And Humans, Xin Zhou
Doctoral Dissertations
The human body is cohabitated with large number of microorganisms, which potentially influence the health conditions of the host. Dynamic interactions between microbiome and host are critical for this cohabitation relationship. Among human population, the composition of microbiome shows clear interpersonal variations and intrapersonal plasticity, with patterns and mechanisms that are currently unclear. In the first part of this thesis, we explored the human microbiome variations in relation to healthy aging, aimed to understand if microbiome imbalance, or dysbiosis, is a common phenotype of older adults regardless of the age-related diseases. In the second part, we expanded our investigation on …
