A Study Of Lymphocyte Subpopulations In Allergic And Asthmatic Patients, Cleora W. Barnwell Oct 1978

A Study Of Lymphocyte Subpopulations In Allergic And Asthmatic Patients, Cleora W. Barnwell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The role of T and B lymphocytes in the human immune response has been studied in allergic and asthmatic patients by many investigators. Theories of suppressed cellular immunity have been reported showing decreased levels of T cells in peripheral blood. Elevated levels of IgE, an antibody, have been reported in these conditions, but not shown to be significant in distinguishing the different types of asthma. A double blind study of 19 allergic and 42 asthmatic individuals was conducted measuring T and B cell levels and IgE levels. The asthmatic group was subdivided into three types, intrinsic, extrinsic and mixed. The …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Vibration Sensitivity On Hydrophone Design, George Dickson Hugus Oct 1978

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Vibration Sensitivity On Hydrophone Design, George Dickson Hugus

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Hydrophones used in the ocean produce spurious outputs due to vibration sensitivity which can severely degrade measurement accuracy. Sources of these vibration inputs are ocean surface waves, flow turbulence, and induced mechanical vibration. The hydrophone response to these vibrations is a noise voltage output. This can leave to a signal-to-noise problem particularly when measurements of small sound pressure levels are to be made. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the vibration response of three typical piezoelectric hydrophone sensor elements configurations and give design methods and constraints for reducing the problem of vibration sensitivity to an acceptable level. The …

Phosphorus Content And Release From Lake Sediments By Agitation, Hsien Ping Tang

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Man-made mixing in shallow lakes will resuspend bottom sediments and increase phosphorus concentration in the water body. The increase in phosphorus content may affect the lake productivity. During the course of this study, a better understanding of the water-sediment-phosphorus relationships of some shallow lakes in Central Florida was attempted. Column studies and batch experiments were used to investigate the effect of mechanical mixing on the release of phosphorus from bottom sediments collected from Lake Claire and Jessup. The particle size distribution and density distribution of the bottom sediments were studied and the release of phosphorus from each fraction was measured. …

A Case Study Of A Solar Augmented Heating System Versus A Solar Assisted Heat Pump, Louis P. Braleski

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The usage and applications of solar energy are numerous; however, it's still in its infancy. The subject matter discusses two applications of solar energy, a "Solar Augmented Heated System" and a "Solar Assisted Heat Pump." The solar augmented system and the solar assisted system have the same components; however, the way they are used is of primary concern. A solar system in parallel with a heat pump is called "Solar Augmented Heating System" or in series with a heat pump is a "Solar Assisted Heat Pump." A 2000 ft2 house was utilized as the basis of the design. The heating …

A Computer Model For Comparison Of Flat Plate And Focusing Collectors For Solar Air Conditioning, H. B. Bucher Jul 1978

A Computer Model For Comparison Of Flat Plate And Focusing Collectors For Solar Air Conditioning, H. B. Bucher

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Two types of solar collecting systems are frequently employed--flat plate collectors with spectrally selective windows which trap sunlight with the "greenhouse effect" and focusing systems with curved mirrors which concentrate the sun's rays on an absorbing surface. The flat plate collector is the simpler of the two designs, but cannot readily provide temperatures as high as the focusing collector. Both of the collectors are candidates for absorption cycle solar air conditioning systems. This role dictates higher temperature than are normally required of solar collectors, particularly the flat plate design. Focusing systems of interest here are those which are fixed in …

An Investigation Into A Least Squares Method For Image Registration, Ernest William Cordon Jul 1978

An Investigation Into A Least Squares Method For Image Registration, Ernest William Cordon

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

One of the problems associated with the automatic image processing of satellite photographs such as weather maps is the need for image registration; that is, the fitting of a map that has some translational and rotational bias to a known data base. This paper investigates a least square method of image registration using an image that has been converted into a boundary map with a pixel representation 1 for land, -1 for water and zero for cloud pixels. A sampled correlation array is constructed by shifting the weather map to locations on a given grid, centered around a sampled correlation …

Affinity Of Roadside Soils For Lead, Zinc, And Chromium, John H. Bell Apr 1978

Affinity Of Roadside Soils For Lead, Zinc, And Chromium, John H. Bell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Highways are known to be a source of several toxic pollutants including the heavy metals lead, zinc and chromium. The need to manage highway runoff in a manner which reduces or eliminates the loading of heavy metals to receiving waters is evident, but more research has been required to develop cost-effective ways of meeting this need. Recent studies have indicated that the soil is a significant "sink" for heavy metals, allowing speculation that management practices which make use of the soil to retain metals from highway runoff should be employed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the ability …

Differential Clotting Responses Of Rabbits To Injections Of Homogenates From Wild-Type And Tumorous-Head Drosophila Melanogaster, Alfred B. Cox

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Two groups of New Zealand white rabbits were injected with homogenates from Tumorous-head (Tuh) and Wild-type (WT) Drosophila melanogaster. A third group was used as a saline injected control. Blood collected in both acute and chronic studies was subjected to various hematological and post mortem studies. The Tuh injected group showed a five-fold increase in thrombocytes (blood platelets) over the controls and four-fold increase over the wild-type group. Reduced clotting times were noted from acute to chronic studies in both tumorous and wild-type studies; however, the magnitude of change between the two groups was insignificant. Investigations involving electrophoretic banding patterns, …

Reduction Of Lunchroom Noise And Other Behaviors Using Feedback And Group Contingent Reinforcement, Lottie Nell Larowe Apr 1978

Reduction Of Lunchroom Noise And Other Behaviors Using Feedback And Group Contingent Reinforcement, Lottie Nell Larowe

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Reduction of noise levels in an elementary school lunchroom was examined as a function of feedback and feedback plus reinforcement using group contingency procedures. Feedback consisted of signals from a traffic light with green indicating acceptable levels, yellow indicating slightly higher levels and red indicating unacceptable levels. Other behaviors, running, hitting, pushing and kicking, were measured incidentally. Results indicate that feedback plus reinforcement was effective in reducing noise levels. Feedback alone was also effective, but to a lesser degree. No response - response relationship was found to exist between noise level and the other behaviors.

The abundance of zooplankton groups (Rotifera, Cladocera, and Copepoda) was not significantly different among the ponds …

Synthesis And Flame Retardant Studies Of Bromoester Of 2,4-Pentadienoic Acid, Hessam Ghane Jan 1978

Synthesis And Flame Retardant Studies Of Bromoester Of 2,4-Pentadienoic Acid, Hessam Ghane

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The synthesis and fire retardancy of several bromoesters of 2,4-pentadienoic acid were investigated. The synthesis of 2,4-pentadienoic acid was accomplished by liquid phase reaction of acrolein and malonic acid in the presence of pyridine. The conversion of the acid to bromoesters was performed by two different procedures. In the first procedure, the corresponding acid chloride was prepared from the acid via reaction with SOCl2 in the presence of powdered (3A°) molecular sieves. The molecular sieves serve as an internal trap for by-product HC1 and inhibit the competing polymerization reaction of the acid chloride. Reaction of the acid chloride with various …
