Ula Reflections Within Specialized Chemistry — Trace Evidence, A Forensic Science Course, Jiyeong Hong, Laura Hilario Garcia, Brooke Bass

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2024

This presentation is to display our experience as a ULA in a specialized chemistry course within the forensic science program, Trace Evidence. This course is an upper-level chemistry course that requires a strong foundation in organic and analytical chemistry and is required for all tracks in the forensic science undergraduate program. Trace Evidence also utilizes team-based learning and a flipped modality. We were tasked with helping students during active learning activities regarding the current content by using guiding questions. We learned the best way to help students was to ask open-ended questions, enhance their motivation, and understand their frustrations or …

"Addressing Sexual Abuse: Unveiling Hidden Realities", Shanzida Toha Jan 2024

"Addressing Sexual Abuse: Unveiling Hidden Realities", Shanzida Toha

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2024

My inspiration was from my IDS 4939 course where we had to present about a topic that we are devoted towards. It could be conveyed through PowerPoint, video, etc. but for me I chose to write a research paper about the indiscriminate circumstances that influence Sexual Abusers behavior, and how it profoundly directs their course of action. After an endless time spent on gaining data, this sensitive topic sent me to a black hole of no return. With boundless sources of support with the help of the internet I was feeling guilty as to what I could do with this. …

Investigating The Potential Impact Of External Disadvantages And Self-Doubt On Task Performance, Eric E. Haseman Jr, Archelie Belvu, Mariya Bendus Jan 2024

Investigating The Potential Impact Of External Disadvantages And Self-Doubt On Task Performance, Eric E. Haseman Jr, Archelie Belvu, Mariya Bendus

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2024

Past literature suggests that listening to music while taking a memory recall test can hinder memory recall ability, with music serving as an external disadvantage in the context of a memory recall task. Past literature also suggests that having low levels of self-efficacy can hinder memory recall ability, with self-doubt serving as an internal disadvantage in the context of a memory recall task. Our project sought to investigate the potential effect that intersecting disadvantages can have on an individual's task performance. We took a convenience sample of 36 participants and randomly sorted them into one of six conditions: a non-music …

Comparison Of Gender Ideology Between Persons Who Lived In A Single-Parent Vs Two-Parent Household, Cecili Stanley

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2024

Purpose of this project was to review the influences of gender ideology. It is noted in today's social sphere, there is an ongoing debate regarding gender roles in and outside of the home. The research was intended to review the effects of gender role ideology between single-parent and two-parent households and verify if male dominance influences gender ideology. On the contrary, the results suggested religion having a greater influence on gender ideology.

Impact Of Senate Bill 1580: Medical Conscience In Florida, Rishi Nair, Nicholas Mistry, Vishanth Murugesan, Hunter Burtha, Douglas D'Amelio

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2024

In 2023, the Florida Legislature passed Senate Bill 1580 (SB 1580), which enshrined protections of medical providers’ conscience into law. Upon enactment, proponents have hailed the bill’s leadership in enabling providers to uphold their personal values and refuse to provide care on such grounds. Opponents have questioned SB 1580’s ability to ensure accessible healthcare by enabling personal beliefs to potentially overshadow the scientific consensus. We analyzed the benefits and drawbacks of this new law in relation to existing research on the impact of medical conscience on health outcomes. SB 1580 draws upon affirmations of the Hippocratic Oath and moral practices …

The Use Of Limiting Screen Time To Reduce Or Eliminate Adverse Mental Health Effects In Adolescents: An Interventional Study, Tiffany Goree

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2024

The research project "The Use of Limiting Screen Time During the School Year and Summer Seasons to Reduce or Eliminate Adverse Mental Health Effects in Adolescents 11-14 Years Old: A Randomized Control Trial" stemmed from personal experience and concern for adolescent mental health. I took the initiative with my formed project group and facilitated collaborative brainstorming sessions to refine our ideas. Key activities included designing the study, selecting assessment tools like the Profile of Mood States test, and coordinating collaborative sessions to discuss progress and challenges.

Through this project, I learned the importance of leadership, teamwork, and effective communication in …

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

The purpose of our project was to assist and foster connections with students and faculty at Unlocking Children's Potential (UCP) Charter Schools. The main focus of our group's service was to assist with day to day classroom activities at UCP. Our goal was to provide a helping hand and watchful eye for the faculty teaching students at UCP. Fostering connections with students at UCP was also an important goal for our service. Each of us individually served in different places at UCP, but every member of the group had extensive contact with at least 13 students in a classroom setting, …

Mysticism And Medieval Society: Stories And Their Impact, Gabriella P. Gomes, Lexi Schwartzberg Nov 2023

Mysticism And Medieval Society: Stories And Their Impact, Gabriella P. Gomes, Lexi Schwartzberg

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

The Middle Ages was a time when mysticism often overtook reality. Creatures such as witches, dragons, and sciapods were thought to be real, and people took precautions against them. While tales of these creatures entertain us today, their presence in the minds of the medieval society in which they developed had dangerous consequences. The myth of witches allowed for the persecution of people who defied the social order and committed innocent acts that were rebranded as heresy. The myth of dragons was used to alienate supposed enemies of the Christian religion. These myths were so influential that their images have …

Low-Dose Prednisone Or Methylprednisolone In Treating Patients With Newly Diagnosed Acute Gvhd, Dillon C. Hill, Melanie Obsina, Juan Sanchez, Jordan Genco, Vihan Yalamanchili

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

Graft Versus Host Disease affects less than 20,000 cases per year and our project aims to give those who experience this terrible disease a better outcome and more manageable pain. The clinical trial that this data is collected from analyzes low-dose prednisone versus the standard dose and how that affects both morbidity and progression of the disease to Stage III-IV. This clinical trial has many clinical implications as it shows that reducing the dosage of commonly used treatment methods can sometimes have positive effects even though it is the standard to use a certain dose. This clinical trial found that …

Empowering Futures: Matthew's Knights Of Distinction Leadership E-Portfolio In Academic Excellence, Matthew A. Hernandez

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

My presentation centers on my E-Portfolio, seamlessly incorporating three key milestones from the Knights of Distinction program into significant events. Beginning with a brief personal introduction, I shared why I became a physics major, and explored the roots of my passion for space. Utilizing a visual aid, my poster board, I elucidated each focus area and its relevance to my aspirations and societal contributions. The first focus area was Citizenship and how I attended an “Industry BBQ” with the hopes of gaining valuable information to share it with other engineers. The second focus area was about leadership and my role …

Professional Development For Graduate School: Eportfolio And Networking, Wesley Lim Jan 2023

Professional Development For Graduate School: Eportfolio And Networking, Wesley Lim

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

The development of an ePortfolio offers a digital introduction during networking events in an increasingly technology-driven society. Throughout one semester in Biomedical Sciences Careers, MCB 3933, I developed an ePortfolio with components like a resume, personal statement, individual development plan, and elevator speech. In my ePortfolio, I had three areas of focus that showcased my highlights and skills in my undergraduate education: the academic skill sets I developed, my relevant research experiences, and my time as a teaching assistant for multiple courses.

As part of the course, students were required to contact at least four people in their desired field …

Addressing Women's Issues With Period. Ucf, Erin Fuchs Jan 2023

Addressing Women's Issues With Period. Ucf, Erin Fuchs

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

In my Advanced Leadership Class, LDR 3215, we were instructed to choose a social issue that we felt passionately about. Women’s rights issues have been a topic of interest for me for a very long time, so I chose to research and address the topic of period poverty, which is an overlooked subject, despite its prevalence in our society. In my research, I found some very interesting, but heartbreaking information that sparked me to work with an organization called Period. UCF, a local RSO that provides period products to the local homeless population and supports The Menstrual Movement, designed to …

Excess Body Weight And It’S Association To Diabetes Mortality Among Florida Adults, Shivanie M. Sharma Jan 2023

Excess Body Weight And It’S Association To Diabetes Mortality Among Florida Adults, Shivanie M. Sharma

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

“Excess Body Weight and Its Association to Diabetes Mortality” is a topic that has been highly studied and researched. However, there has yet been a study that looks at excess body weight and its association to Diabetes Mortality among Florida Adults. Specifically, by utilizing data from the Florida Health Charts. This includes the analyzation by Person (Florida Blacks versus Whites), Place (Florida counties), and Time (rate of diabetes mortality though the years in Florida). This study further provides information on the idea of the “obesity paradox.” But, it also sheds light on the implications and limitations based on previous epidemiological …

Greetings, PFSA! First, Happy New Year. I hope you have settled into Spring 2021 and that you are all finding harmony amidst the state of the world. This newsletter is special because we are celebrating the current Black History Month and the upcoming Month of the Womxn. Within PFSA, our value of community acknowledges and uplifts the intersection of queer black communities and transgender and gender diverse people. How quickly the year has gone by! As we prepare to celebrate the holidays in this new normal, please remember to make choices that will keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy. We are all in this together. The PFSA is also aware that during this time it can be especially difficult for those of us who may not have a family to go home to, so be kind to yourself and consider hosting a zoom celebration so that you can stay connected to your chosen family and friends. Welcome to Fall 2020: A different world at UCF. I want to commend you for making it through the summer and for charging through the fall, albeit changes around us. The PFSA is here and continues to be committed to LGBTQ+ needs by raising awareness and celebrating who we are. I also want to acknowledge this summer’s monumental SCOTUS ruling that the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits sex discrimination, applies to discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Moving forward the newsletters will be coming out every other month, and what better way to start than during …

February is Black History Month, and as we recognize past and present struggles of the Black community, we also celebrate Black excellence. The Black community is rich with history, identities, cultures, all of which include those who are LGBTQ+. Sometimes in underrepresented communities, the intersection of queer identity is erased, but we should always try to tell the full truth of an individual’s story to broaden minds and to educate. From Bayard Rustin, to Martha P. Johnson, to Wanda Sykes, to Frank Ocean, to Janet Mock, there are political and public figures who have revolutionized ways of thinking in our …

Pfsa Newsletter. Volume 03, Using Self Care, November 2019, Pfsa

Newsletters

This month I am inviting you to practice self care. Often times we get caught up in the everyday hustle and forget that we are beings who need to pause and do the work to be more whole. As someone who is a part of the LGBTQ+ community, learning to love myself did not come through the validation of others. Instead, it was being open to counseling, introspection, and leaning on my chosen family who wrapped me with love every time I had to face one of my fears. As the holidays approach and there is time to reflect, remember …

LGBTQ+ history month is a reminder of all those that came before me who were brave enough to be out and proud when the world rejected them. Their bravery inspired change and created visibility across political and social platforms. This month also reminds me that we still have long strides ahead to ensure protection and equal rights to all the communities in the LGBTQ+ spectrum; in particular our transgender and gender queer communities. Above all, this month makes me joyful that we have such a rich history of resilience and fills me with pride to be living my authentic truth.
