Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Background: The large number of uninsured individuals in the United States creates negative consequences for those who are uninsured and for those who are covered by health insurance plans. Young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 are the largest uninsured population subgroup. This subgroup warrants analysis. The major aim of this study is to determine why young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 are the largest uninsured population subgroup. Methods: The present study seeks to determine why young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 are the largest population subgroup that is not covered by …

Connectivity Conservation And Endangered Species Recovery: A Study In The Challenges Of Defining Conservation-Reliant Species, Carlos Carroll, Daniel J. Rohlf, Ya-Wei Li, Brett Hartl, Michael K. Phillips, Reed F. Noss Jan 2015

Connectivity Conservation And Endangered Species Recovery: A Study In The Challenges Of Defining Conservation-Reliant Species, Carlos Carroll, Daniel J. Rohlf, Ya-Wei Li, Brett Hartl, Michael K. Phillips, Reed F. Noss

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Many species listed under the US Endangered Species Act (ESA) face continuing threats and will require intervention to address those threats for decades. These species, which have been termed conservation-reliant, pose a challenge to the ESA's mandate for recovery of self-sustaining populations. Most references to conservation-reliant species by federal agencies involve the restoration of population connectivity. However, the diverse threats to connectivity faced by different species have contrasting implications in the context of the ESA's mandate. For species facing long-term threats from invasive species or climate change, restoration of natural dispersal may not be technically feasible in the foreseeable future. …

Gene Expression Of Key Regulators Of Mitochondrial Biogenesis Is Sex Dependent In Mice With Growth Hormone Receptor Deletion In Liver, Ilona Zawada, Michal M. Masternak, Edward O. List, Michael B. Stout, Darlene E. Berryman, Andrzej Lewinski, John J. Kopchick, Andrzej Bartke, Malgorzata Karbownik-Lewinska

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Mitochondrial biogenesis is an essential process for cell viability. Mice with disruption of the growth hormone receptor (GHR) gene (Ghr gene) in the liver (LiGHRKO), in contrast to long-lived mice with global deletion of the Ghr gene (GHRKO), are characterized by lack of improved insulin sensitivity and severe hepatic steatosis. Tissue-specific disruption of the GHR in liver results in a mouse model with dramatically altered GH/IGF1 axis. We have previously shown increased levels of key regulators of mitochondrial biogenesis in insulin-sensitive GHRKO mice. The aim of the present study is to assess, using real-time PCR, the gene expression of key …

No Evidence Of Metabolic Depression In Western Alaskan Juvenile Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus), Lisa A. Hoopes, Lorrie D. Rea, Aaron Christ, Graham A. J. Worthy

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) populations have undergone precipitous declines through their western Alaskan range over the last four decades with the leading hypothesis to explain this decline centering around changing prey quality, quantity, or availability for this species (i.e., nutritional stress hypothesis). Under chronic conditions of reduced food intake sea lions would conserve energy by limiting energy expenditures through lowering of metabolic rate known as metabolic depression. To examine the potential for nutritional stress, resting metabolic rate (RMR) and body composition were measured in free-ranging juvenile Steller sea lions (N = 91) at three distinct geographical locations (Southeast Alaska, …

Nguyen, Kathleen J. Melanson, Zhiping Yu, Britte E. Lowther, James M. Rippe

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The American Heart Association (AHA) has advocated that women and men not consume more than 100 and 150 kcal/day, respectively, from added sugars. These levels are currently exceeded by over 90% of the adult population in the United States. Few data exist on longer-term metabolic effects when sucrose and High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), the principal sources of added dietary sugars, are consumed at levels typical of the general population. Sixty five overweight and obese individuals were placed on a eucaloric (weight stable) diet for 10-weeks, which incorporated sucrose- or HFCS-sweetened, low-fat milk at 10% or 20% of calories in …

The Effects Of Fructose-Containing Sugars On Weight, Body Composition And Cardiometabolic Risk Factors When Consumed At Up To The 90th Percentile Population Consumption Level For Fructose, Joshua Lowndes, Stephanie Sinnett, Zhiping Yu, James Rippe

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The American Heart Association (AHA) and World Health Organization (WHO) have recommended restricting calories from added sugars at lower levels than the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendations, which are incorporated in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 (DGAs 2010). Sucrose (SUC) and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) have been singled out for particular concern, because of their fructose content, which has been specifically implicated for its atherogenic potential and possible role in elevating blood pressure through uric acid-mediated endothelial dysfunction. This study explored the effects when these sugars are consumed at typical population levels up to the 90th percentile population …

Emotional Intelligence And Mismatching Expressive And Verbal Messages: A Contribution To Detection Of Deception, Jerzy Wojciechowski, Maciej Stolarski, Gerald Matthews Jan 2014

Emotional Intelligence And Mismatching Expressive And Verbal Messages: A Contribution To Detection Of Deception, Jerzy Wojciechowski, Maciej Stolarski, Gerald Matthews

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Processing facial emotion, especially mismatches between facial and verbal messages, is believed to be important in the detection of deception. For example, emotional leakage may accompany lying. Individuals with superior emotion perception abilities may then be more adept in detecting deception by identifying mismatch between facial and verbal messages. Two personal factors that may predict such abilities are female gender and high emotional intelligence (EI). However, evidence on the role of gender and EI in detection of deception is mixed. A key issue is that the facial processing skills required to detect deception may not be the same as those …

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The presence of multiple interacting threats to biodiversity and the increasing rate of species extinction make it critical to prioritize management efforts on species and communities that maximize conservation success. We implemented a multi-step approach that coupled vulnerability assessments evaluating threats to Florida taxa such as climate change, sea-level rise, and habitat fragmentation with in-depth literature surveys of taxon-specific ecological traits. The vulnerability, adaptive capacity, and ecological traits of 12 threatened and endangered subspecies were compared to non-listed subspecies of the same parent species. Overall, the threatened and endangered subspecies showed high vulnerability and low adaptive capacity, in particular to …

"Normative Content" And Health Inequity Enculturation: A Logic Model Of Men's Health Advocacy, James E. Leone, Michael J. Rovito Jan 2013

"Normative Content" And Health Inequity Enculturation: A Logic Model Of Men's Health Advocacy, James E. Leone, Michael J. Rovito

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Epidemiologic studies and related literature consistently report that males have fewer years of life expectancy than females. Moreover, males experience fewer quality years of life in that they tend to live with greater rates of morbidity such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes among other conditions. Causal evidence traditionally highlights the role of biology in determining the life course for males. However, emerging literature suggests that social determinants of health play a more central role in male morbidity and mortality, and thus contribute to health inequities between the sexes. The purpose of this article is to explore core concepts of …

The Use Of Structured Imagery And Dispositional Measurement To Assess Situational Use Of Mindfulness Skills, Jonathan C. Mitchell, Patricia A. Bach, Jeffrey E. Cassisi Jan 2013

The Use Of Structured Imagery And Dispositional Measurement To Assess Situational Use Of Mindfulness Skills, Jonathan C. Mitchell, Patricia A. Bach, Jeffrey E. Cassisi

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The recent proliferation of studies on mindfulness produced varying theoretical models, each based in part on how mindfulness is assessed. These models agree, however, that mindfulness encompasses moment-to-moment or situational experiences. Incongruence between dispositional and situational assessment would be problematic for theory and empirical research. In particular, it remains to be established whether situational measurement is an accurate method for mindfulness assessment and whether dispositional measures are able to accurately detect mindfulness skills in various situations. The association between dispositional and situational mindfulness processes (i.e., situational attention awareness and emotion acceptance) was examined in two studies. In Study 1 (N …

Lack Of Neuropsychological Deficits In Generalized Social Phobia, Scott R. Sutterby, Jeffrey S. Bedwell Jan 2012

Lack Of Neuropsychological Deficits In Generalized Social Phobia, Scott R. Sutterby, Jeffrey S. Bedwell

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

There are relatively few existing studies examining neuropsychological functioning in social phobia (SP), which collectively yield mixed results. Interpretation of results is further complicated by a number of methodological inconsistencies across studies, including the examination of neuropsychological domains in relative isolation from one another. The present study utilized a broader collection of neuropsychological tests to assess nine domains of functioning in 25 individuals diagnosed with generalized SP and 25 nonpsychiatric controls (NC). A mixed ANOVA revealed neither a significant group by domain interaction, nor a significant main effect of group. Furthermore, no significant group differences emerged between the SP and …

Markesbery, Mark P. Mattson, Dong-Gyu Jo

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The cause of elevated level of amyloid beta-peptide (A beta 42) in common late-onset sporadic [Alzheimers disease (AD)] has not been established. Here, we show that the membrane lipid peroxidation product 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE) is associated with amyloid and neurodegenerative pathologies in AD and that it enhances ?-secretase activity and A beta 42 production in neurons. The ?-secretase substrate receptor, nicastrin, was found to be modified by HNE in cultured neurons and in brain specimens from patients with AD, in which HNEnicastrin levels were found to be correlated with increased ?-secretase activity and A beta plaque burden. Furthermore, HNE modification of …

Exposure To Silver Nanoparticles Inhibits Selenoprotein Synthesis And The Activity Of Thioredoxin Reductase, Milan Srivastava, Sanjay Singh, William T. Self

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

BACKGROUND: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and silver (Ag)-based materials are increasingly being incorporated into consumer products, and although humans have been exposed to colloidal Ag in many forms for decades, this rise in the use of Ag materials has spurred interest into their toxicology. Recent reports have shown that exposure to AgNPs or Ag ions leads to oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and reduced cell proliferation. Previous studies have shown that Ag accumulates in tissues as silver sulfides (Ag2S) and silver selenide (Ag2Se). OBJECTIVES: In this study we investigated whether exposure of cells in culture to AgNPs or Ag ions at …

Facilitating Score And Causal Inference Trees For Large Observational Studies, Xiaogang Su, Joseph Kang, Juanjuan Fan, Richard A. Levine, Xin Yan

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Assessing treatment effects in observational studies is a multifaceted problem that not only involves heterogeneous mechanisms of how the treatment or cause is exposed to subjects, known as propensity, but also differential causal effects across sub-populations. We introduce a concept termed the facilitating score to account for both the confounding and interacting impacts of covariates on the treatment effect. Several approaches for estimating the facilitating score are discussed. In particular, we put forward a machine learning method, called causal inference tree (CIT), to provide a piecewise constant approximation of the facilitating score. With interpretable rules, CIT splits data in such …
