Black African American Men (BAAM) suffer disproportionately from trauma related challenges and have a higher risk of encountering trauma across the lifespan. The negative impact of trauma is a major public health concern in the United States, evidence suggests trauma negatively impacts the physical well-being, mental health, and mortality rate. BAAM have increased rates of trauma exposure and their traumatic experience is historically complex involving a variety of contemporary issues (i.e. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), depression, victimization and desensitization, stress). Single case research design (SCRD) is a common methodology used across clinical disciplines to determine treatments effectiveness by comparing treatment conditions to baseline conditions in individual cases, usually among researchers working with smaller samples. Although popular within behavioral disciplines such as special education and behavioral analysis, studies have begun to emerge in counseling. However, guidance and current understanding of the use of SCRD in counseling is limited. A content analysis of counseling journals from 2003 to 2014 yielded only 7 studies using SCRD. The narrative surrounding the meaning of being a Black woman has historically been dominated by stereotypes such as the mammy, jezebel, sapphire, and angry Black woman. Black women have attempted to control their own narrative through the internalization of these stereotypes, leading to the creation of the Strong Black Woman (SBW) construct. While the SBW is comprised of a sense of caretaker, independence, and emotional restraint, Black women’s attempts at embodying this construct in the face of societal oppression and familial responsibilities can and often does have negative effects on their mental health.
