Process Of Extracting Procyanidins By Alkaline Hydrolysis, Luke R. Howard, Brittany L. White, Ronald L. Prior
Patents Granted
A process of extracting procyanidins by alkaline hydrolysis is described. In particular, a procyanidin-containing material, pomace or residue is treated with an alkali, such as sodium or potassium hydroxide, for a predetermined amount of time and at a predetermined temperature to release procyanidins bound to polysaccharides and/or proteins of the cell wall or depolymerize polymeric procyanidins. After the procyanidins are released by alkaline hydrolysis, the extracts are acidified to obtain a pH level where the procyanidins do not degrade. The process of extracting procyanidins may be utilized to estimate the total amount of bound procyanidins in a plant material, enhance …

Consumers And Sustainability At Walmart: A Student's Perspective, Kealy Carter, Satish Jayachandran
Consumers And Sustainability At Walmart: A Student's Perspective, Kealy Carter, Satish Jayachandran
Wal-Mart Sustainability Case Project
To further encourage students to analyze initial goals in comparison with outcomes over time, we have developed a consumer-oriented case—“Consumers and Sustainability at Walmart: A Student’s Perspective”—that moves beyond the perspective of internal Walmart participants to explores issues of sustainability from the point of view of a typical Walmart shopper. In this case, we examine the experience of a fictional student shopper who goes to Walmart and wants to buy sustainable products, which helps raise questions for students about what Walmart’s actions mean to them as consumers, citizens as well as business professionals. The case also asks students to evaluate …

The Effect Of Mortar Strength On The Standard Test For Strand Bond, Cameron Murray
The Effect Of Mortar Strength On The Standard Test For Strand Bond, Cameron Murray
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The prestressed industry is moving towards adopting the Standard Test for Strand Bond (STSB) to quantify the bond capacity of prestressing strand. In the test, strand is pulled through an 18 in. cylindrical casing filled with mortar. The force corresponding to the dead end displacement of 0.1 in. is recorded and this value is used to quantify strand bond. One of the concerns of the test is the requirement of a mean mortar strength of 4,500 to 5,000 psi during testing. There is concern that this 500 psi range may be too difficult to achieve. A study was conducted to …
Evaluation Of Shock Induced Spallation In Nanocrystalline Copper, Chase Philpot
Evaluation Of Shock Induced Spallation In Nanocrystalline Copper, Chase Philpot
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
This research uses atomistic simulations to examine the behavior of nanocrystalline Cu under impact at ballistic speeds. The advantage of using atomistic simulations to study shock induced deformation is that a real-time picture of the evolution of the microstructure can be attained, whereas experimentally this is not possible. Specifically, molecular dynamics simulations are used to build models of the material and run the simulations. Six cases are explored: Single crystal Cu loaded along the <100>, <110>, and <111> directions, and nanocrystalline samples with average grain diameters of 5, 10, and 15 nm. The target to flyer ratio is varied to generate …111>110>100>

A Characterization And Measurement System For Propylene Glycol Properties (Means Of Attitude Control In Space), Abdoul Maiga
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Recently, engineers have been able to design smaller satellites called Nano-satellites. Nano-satellites (1-10kg) also known as “Cube Sat†are based nominally on multiples of a unit cube of 10 centimeters on each side. The basic cube shape is known as 1U CubeSat. A major obstacle when designing the nano-satellites is to choose a propulsion system that would be safe, effective, low cost, and could easily function with a resistojet. The proposed system uses Propylene Glycol (C3H8O2) as a safe propellant for a resistojet. In order to predict the behavior of the propellant, the property to be characterized is its surface …

Optimization Of Nonlinear Switch Cells For Switching Converters, Bradley Alan Reese
Optimization Of Nonlinear Switch Cells For Switching Converters, Bradley Alan Reese
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Switch cells consist of an array of power switches and passive components which can replace the main switches alone in many power topologies, allowing reduced switching loss without altering the power topology directly. This thesis discusses the development of a switch cell topology that utilizes a saturable resonant inductor to reduce the size and power loss of the cell. Additionally, the cell transfers energy stored in the inductor into a capacitor for efficient energy storage during the cell's conduction region. This energy is then transferred back to the system when the cell turns off, thus reducing the total switching energy.
Urbanism In The Northern Levant During The 4th Millennium Bce, Rasha El-Endari
Urbanism In The Northern Levant During The 4th Millennium Bce, Rasha El-Endari
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The development of urbanism in the Near East during the 4thmillennium BCE has been an important debate for decades and with recent scientific findings, a revival of this intellectual discussion has come about. Many archaeologists suggested that urban societies first emerged in southern Mesopotamia, and then expanded to the north and northwest. With recent excavations in northern Mesopotamia, significant evidence has come to light with the finding of monumental architecture and city walls dated to the beginning of the 4th millennium BCE, well before southern Mesopotamian urban expansion. These discoveries reflect important administrative systems and stratified sociopolitical structures within these …
