Petroleum-Wax Separation, Michael D. Ackerson, Seyed-Hamid Arabshahi, Robert E. Babcock
Petroleum-Wax Separation, Michael D. Ackerson, Seyed-Hamid Arabshahi, Robert E. Babcock
Patents Granted
A process for dewaxing is described. It includes the steps of mixing a waxy feedstock near its pour point with an ambient or below ambient temperature solvent essentially free of a selected cosolvent, to form a solvent/feedstock mixture, and subsequently adding the cosolvent to the solvent/feedstock mixture to cause instantaneous precipitation of wax on addition of cosolvent. The amount of wax precipitation is controlled by the quantity and temperature of the cosolvent added. The cosolvent is essentially completely miscible with the solvent, but immiscible with the oil and wax. For example, alcohols (methanol, ethanol, propanol), ketones (ketene, acetone), amines, etc. …

The remaining 5.3 percent did not indicate their highest degree offered. Two of the responders were non-academic organizations. The responses are reported …
The Integration Of Firm Resources: The Role Of Capabilities In Strategy And Firm Performance, Daniel Lynch
The Integration Of Firm Resources: The Role Of Capabilities In Strategy And Firm Performance, Daniel Lynch
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Distinctive capabilities are defined as a firm’s accumulated skills and knowledge that may lead to competitive advantage (Day 1994). Distinctive capabilities are founded upon Resource-Based Theory (Barney 1991) that focuses on internal resources as opposed to external market forces (Porter 1980). The present research discusses the integration of distinctive capabilities into this framework; that is, do certain distinctive capabilities (resources) create superior firm performance when linked to the appropriate generic business strategy?
The literature on firm performance has a rich history and is theoretically grounded in several disciplines including economics, sociology, and organizational behavior (Anderson 1982). However, there has not …
Accounting Expertise And Ill-Structured Problems: Cognitive Reasoning Abilities And Performance In Business Valuation Tasks, Wray Bradley
Accounting Expertise And Ill-Structured Problems: Cognitive Reasoning Abilities And Performance In Business Valuation Tasks, Wray Bradley
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the linkage between cognitive reasoning abilities and performance in ill-structured tasks. Prior accounting research shows that the broad construct known as general problem-solving ability is directly related to performance in ill-structured audit tasks (Libby and Tan 1994). General problem-solving ability has been defined as having sub-components comprised of verbal, quantitative, memory, and cognitive reasoning abilities (Libby 1995). Most prior accounting studies have either controlled for performance differences associated with the subcomponent abilities or have just ignored them. This has created a gap in behavioral accounting research (Shanteau 1995; Bouwman and Bradley 1997). This study seeks to partially …

Method And System For Fecal Detection, Min Xiao, Da Kui Zhuang, Guolu Zheng, Michael F. Slavik
Patents Granted
A method of and apparatus for detecting the presence of fecal or ingesta matter contaminants on a poultry or meat item is described. The poultry or meat is exposed to excitation light of a selected bandwidth(s) and certain bandwidth(s) is(are) measured and compared to a threshold, above which indicates contaminants. Suitable excitation bandwidth and measuring bandwidth are selected such that the ratio of or difference between the resulting sample fluorescence and contamination fluorescence are greater than a certain ratio or difference. If contaminants are present, a controller can generate a signal and/or send the contaminated items to a wash station.

Storm And Base Flow Water Quality For Bear, Calf, And Tomahawk Creeks, Kenneth F. Steele, David N. Mott
Technical Reports
Because of the conversion of 92,780 acres of forest to pasture land in the Buffalo River watershed over a 27 year period, there is concern about the affect of agricultural activities on the water quality of the river. Three tributaries (Bear, Calf and Tomahawk creeks) located about mid-length of the Buffalo River were chosen to investigate the affect of agricultural activity on water quality because these streams provide the greatest amounts of fecal bacteria, nitrate+nitrite and phosphorus to the river, despite comprising only 13% of the watershed.

Vulnerability And Use Of Ground And Surface Waters In The Southern Mississippi Valley Region, H. Don Scott
Technical Reports
There is a concern in the Southern Mississippi River Valley of the United States over non-point source pollution of ground and surface waters resulting from activities associated with agricultural production. This agriculturally intensive region consists of two major land resource areas (MLRAs): Southern Mississippi Valley Silty Uplands (MLRA 134) and the Southern Mississippi Valley Alluvium (MLRA 131). Both MLRAs have level to undulating and rolling topography, relatively fertile soils and a climate particularly conducive for row crop production.

Quality Of Surface And Ground Water And Best Management Practices, Kenneth F. Steele
Technical Reports
Arkansas is fortunate to have outstanding water resources, especially in terms of water quality. However, this is not to say that there are no problems. The Arkansas Water Resources Center (AWRC) in cooperation with other state and federal agencies is characterizing our water resources and providing data important to the wise use of these resources. One wise use of our water resources is to mitigate the impact of non-point sources of pollution on water quality through the use of best management practices. These proceedings address not only the characterization of the quality of ground and surface water but also address …

Serological Detection And Identification Of Rice Blast, Fleet N. Lee, Howard A. Scott, Jun Q. Xia
Patents Granted
Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) useful in the serological detection and identification of rice blast were produced by hybridoma cells formed from fusions of myeloma cells with splenocytes from BALB/c mice immunized with an extract of a liquid culture fluid of an isolate of Pyricularia grisea race IB-49. These MAbs reacted similarly with the antigens in various serological techniques used, and did not cross react with any unrelated fungal isolates representing 11 genera, but reacted positively with all 20 races or isolates of P. grisea. The MAbs could detect homologous antigen at about 60 ng fungal protein/ml and a 5-fold dilution of …
Monitoring Cavefish Populations And Environmental Quality In Cave Springs Cave, Arkansas, Arthur V. Brown, G. O. Graening, Paul Vendrell
Monitoring Cavefish Populations And Environmental Quality In Cave Springs Cave, Arkansas, Arthur V. Brown, G. O. Graening, Paul Vendrell
Technical Reports
Cave Springs Cave, Benton County, Arkansas, was monitored from October 1997 to June 1998 to determine the chemical and physical environmental quality and the status of the population of threatened Ozark cavefish, Amblyopsis rosae. The majority of the chemical parameters measured were indicative of adequate environmental quality in the Cave Springs Cave ecosystem. However, several significant problems were revealed. A trend analysis of known water quality studies of this cave complex suggests that many organic and inorganic chemicals have increased in concentration in the last 14 years. This ecologically sensitive water body did not meet Arkansas water quality regulations for …

Reflection Moderation In The U.S. Senate On Economics, Social, And Foreign Policy, Brian E. Russell
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates reelection moderation in the U.S. Senate on economic, social, and foreign policy between 1983 and 1994. I test 3 hypotheses based on the assumption that senators moderate their voting records when seeking reelection to appeal to the median voter. My hypotheses are: (1) Both groups of senators will moderate on economic policy, but a larger percentage of Democrats will moderate than Republicans (2) A majority of Democratic senators will moderate on social policy, but only a small percentage of Republicans will moderate. (3) Less than a majority of both groups of senators will moderate on foreign policy, …
