How Functional Fitness Relates To Muscular Power Among Older Adults, Jessica Mae Moix May 2014

How Functional Fitness Relates To Muscular Power Among Older Adults, Jessica Mae Moix

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

The current study examined the relationship between functional fitness measures and muscular power among older adults. A 30-second chair stand test, 10-meter habitual walking test, and an 8-foot up-and-go test were all used as measures of functional fitness and muscular power was measured by Tendo analysis. The purpose of this study was to determine what aspects of functional fitness were associated with muscular power while then provide evidence that functional fitness can predict muscular power among older adults. Fifty-seven participants over 65 years old completed both the functional fitness and muscular power measures. Three separate correlations between functional fitness measures …

Validity Of The Zephyr Bioharness For Vertical Power Output And Ground Reaction Forces, Fuad Haydar May 2014

Validity Of The Zephyr Bioharness For Vertical Power Output And Ground Reaction Forces, Fuad Haydar

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

Overtraining has become a major problem in college sports today and there is an increasing need for devices to track or measure the amount of stress is being put on the bodies of athletes. One such device is the ZephyrTM BioHarness, which is a puck-like device worn on the chest and is the centerpiece of this study. Researchers wanted to answer the question of whether the ZephyrTM was an effective and valid tool to measure the amount of force placed on the body during a single vertical jump. There were 20 male participants used in this study, 10 Division I …

The Relationship Between Muscular Power And Functional Fitness Among Older Adults, Corinne A. Parkins May 2014

The Relationship Between Muscular Power And Functional Fitness Among Older Adults, Corinne A. Parkins

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of the study was to determine whether functional fitness is a good predictor of average and peak muscular power among adults over the age of 65. The 30-second chair stand and 8-foot-up-and-go test were used to define functional fitness and were administered to 57 older adults. Muscular power output was measured using the Tendo Weightlifting Analyzer during 5 chair stands. Relative average and peak power were used in the analyses. An independent t-test was run on all variables to distinguish differences between men and women, and multiple regression analyses were performed to detect the relationship between the two …

Comparison Of Sweat Rates And Sweat Electrolyte Concentrations In Collegiate Male And Female Athletes With And Without A History Of Cramping, Brittany Cherie Willard May 2014

Comparison Of Sweat Rates And Sweat Electrolyte Concentrations In Collegiate Male And Female Athletes With And Without A History Of Cramping, Brittany Cherie Willard

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore the two main theories of muscle cramping by comparing sweat rate and sweat-electrolyte concentrations of athletes with a reported history of exercise associated muscle cramping (EAMC) to those with minimal cramping history to provide a potential link between sodium deficiency/sweat rate and EAMCs. The methodological consistency of analyses between two separate processes was also evaluated.

Eeg Measurement Of Neural Oscillations At High And Low Frequencies Across Languages, Lauren Nicole Stewart May 2014

Eeg Measurement Of Neural Oscillations At High And Low Frequencies Across Languages, Lauren Nicole Stewart

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

The comprehension and understanding of language depends upon two critical things: first, the acoustic integrity of the linguistic signal that is sent and received as well as the knowledge of the phonology and meaning that is in a given language. However, little is known about how brain rhythms that track these properties involved in comprehension and understanding. A 14 channel telemetric headset measuring electroencephalography (EEG) was used in this study to track the brain’s response at both high (30-50Hz) and low frequencies (3-30Hz) while language samples at varying levels of intelligibility were presented to a native Spanish speaker under the …

Prevalence Of Health Education For Lifestyle Behaviors In Primary Care Clinics, Victoria Bradford May 2014

Prevalence Of Health Education For Lifestyle Behaviors In Primary Care Clinics, Victoria Bradford

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

Health education is an important growing focus in preventative medicine nationwide. Topics spanning from nutrition and exercise to injury and illness avoidance are being implemented as part of the educational and training process in medical schools across the United States. We sought to examine the prevalence of health education counseling provided by primary care personnel during patient visits. Additional analyses were conducted to determine factors associated with the provision of patient health education by physicians and nurses. METHODS: A nationally representative sample of patients presenting to primary care settings in the U.S. with data obtained from the 2007-2010 National Ambulatory …
