This paper explores the playtime of elementary students in two Northwest Arkansas schools. This paper examines the difference in the amount of play students are receiving from preschool to kindergarten. The research question is, “Are the types of and amounts of play in preschool and kindergarten settings appropriate to meet the developmental needs of young learners including cognitive, socio-emotional and physical development?” Data were collected through observations and teacher questionnaires. Divergent thinking is a 21st century skill that allows individuals to create innovative ways to alleviate some of the burdens on society by finding new solutions to old problems. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2010), child abuse and neglect continues to be a significant issue in our country. An estimated six million children were the subject of reports of child maltreatment in 2009. Walsh, Laskey, McInnes, Farrell, Mathews, and Briggs (2011) explained that many educators are not well-equipped to recognize the signs of abuse among their students. A Survey Of Teacher Knowledge And Understanding Of Special Education Law, Cassie Glidewell

This study investigated teacher knowledge and understanding of special education law. Teachers from 3 elementary schools in a district in Northwest Arkansas were asked a sample of questions in a survey. Using the survey, the participants’ responses were evaluated to determine the extent of their knowledge. Participation was voluntary, and conducted during school hours. The results of the study concluded that respondent teachers have a general knowledge of special education law indicating that they differentiate instruction as a means to meet IDEA and other laws as appropriate.
