The Declining Presbyterian Church, Joshua A. Edwards Dec 2017

The Declining Presbyterian Church, Joshua A. Edwards

Religious Studies

In this thesis I will discuss how the Presbyterian Church has been declining in membership and in the number of people attending weekly services. Within this study, I use my own church, Niagara Presbyterian Church in Niagara Falls, NY as a case study to further prove what is happening within the Presbyterian Church. Though the trend of declining church attendance can be seen across most denominations, I will show how the Presbyterian Church specifically is struggling and show why it is unique in its situation along with other characteristics of the decline that have happened across the denominations. I close …

Interactive Website Promoting Reduced Animal Product Consumption, Audrey R. Caplan Jun 2017

Interactive Website Promoting Reduced Animal Product Consumption, Audrey R. Caplan

Informatics

A shift towards a plant-based diet has many benefits, including reducing the number of animals who are slaughtered for food. The goal of this project was to design and develop an interactive online tool to inform people’s dietary decisions, based on the direct effect that their diets have on farmed animals’ lives. Specifically, the website was developed to calculate the number of animals killed to sustain an individual website visitor’s diet, based on information provided by the user, and to provide personalized recommendations based on those calculations on how the individual can reduce their consumption of animal products.

The Ideal Of Liberation: Women In Sri Lanka’S Civil War, Akeela Makshood May 2017

The Ideal Of Liberation: Women In Sri Lanka’S Civil War, Akeela Makshood

History Honors Program

In the 1990s, videos emerged from the war-torn Northern peninsula of Sri Lanka of young, female LTTE1 cadres graduating from basic military training. Donning tiger-striped attire, groups of young girls and women were garlanded for their accomplishments by a woman standing out in stark contrast to the Tamil2fighters. Known endearingly as “Aunty” amongst the Tigers, Adele Ann Wilby came to be known internationally as the “White Tiger.” Here she was, the Australian-born former nurse, in the epicenter of an island’s civil war, garlanding female volunteers during a ceremony where they received their cyanide capsules. Adele herself wore …

Tangled Subjectivities: An Examination Of The Japanese Subject From 1868-1912, Haylee Shepard

History Honors Program

When a 260-year-old regime comes toppling down, how do you organize society after the fall? That is the challenge that faced members of the Meiji state after the end of the Tokugawa Bakufu. The need for internal unity and the pressure of Western Imperialism, as imposed by the Unequal Treaties,[1] raised the stakes of the Meiji State’s goal: to create a modern nation-state with a unifying national identity. What did that process entail? First, create a legal precedent for control and monopolize violence. Second, define the individual because a nation needs a public, and a public cannot exist without …

Women’S Liberation, Family, And The Fight For Daycare At The University At Albany, Sheri Sarnoff

History Honors Program

On October 9 1970, the Albany Student Press, the University at Albany’s student newspaper, featured an article entitled, “Day Care A Basic Issue,” which discussed the Pierce Hall Day Care Center. The students using the center claimed that the University’s Administration contradicted their original support for the on-campus daycare center. The students exclaimed, “issue after issue has been fabricated (Space, money etc) to stall the progress on the Center.”1 The article also featured a quote from a spokeswoman from the Women’s Liberation Front arguing that, “the Administration has continually enjoyed putting forth the facade of working with women, when …

Authority's Last Stand: Mainline Protestants, Catholics, And Albany’S Tumultuous Sixties, Calley Quinn May 2017

Authority's Last Stand: Mainline Protestants, Catholics, And Albany’S Tumultuous Sixties, Calley Quinn

History Honors Program

In 1970, a mainline Protestant in the Capital Area Council of Churches officially reached his breaking point. “Students in vast numbers have risen in rebellion against conventional American society,” Reverend Frank Snow stated to fellow Council members, “…. The crisis, as we all know from observation, if not from personal experience, is real.”1 Serving as head campus minister for the State University of New York at Albany, Snow could not handle counseling one more student concerned with the Vietnam War and conscription laws. He made it very clear in the Annual Report of the Capital Area Council of Churches …

Chronic Arsenic Exposure In Nanomolar Concentrations Accelerates Senescent Phenotypes In Vitro, Heather M. Sabo May 2017

Chronic Arsenic Exposure In Nanomolar Concentrations Accelerates Senescent Phenotypes In Vitro, Heather M. Sabo

Biological Sciences

Arsenic is recognized as an environmental carcinogen, in which over 100 million individuals worldwide experience chronic exposure through contaminated drinking water. Arsenic exposure is linked to several health conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, skin lesions, immune dysfunction, and cardiovascular disease. Here we test the hypothesis that toxicants, such as arsenic, accelerate the program of senescence. Human (IMR-90) primary diploid fibroblasts were chronically exposed to arsenic at nanomolar concentrations and the impact on the expression of senescent-associated mRNAs was evaluated. IMR-90 cells were exposed either to untreated media or exposed to 130nM and 330nM AsCl3 supplemented media. RNA samples were extracted …

Bhlhe40-As1 A Long-Noncoding Rna Regulates Dec1 On Breast Cancer Progression, Denisse Duran-Reyes May 2017

Bhlhe40-As1 A Long-Noncoding Rna Regulates Dec1 On Breast Cancer Progression, Denisse Duran-Reyes

Biological Sciences

Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS) is a precursor to breast cancer where abnormal cells have been found in the mammary duct but have not become invasive and spread into surrounding tissue. There has been an increase in early diagnosis of DCIS, but only around 40% of the cases ever progress to an invasive stage, and thus detection can lead to unnecessary surgeries. To identify which of these 40% progress, long noncoding RNAs were used. Through RNA sequencing of DCIS and invasive cells from real patient samples, BHLHE40 - AS1 was discovered, a long - noncoding R NA, to be highly …

Exploration Of The Interactions Between Amyloid-Beta Protein And Insulin In Various Ionic Conditions, Quade Goldenberg

Biological Sciences

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by tau tangles and amyloid - β (Aβ) peptide aggregates amyloids in the brain, specifically in the hippocampus. Aβ plaques are known to form primarily in the extracellular space aroun d neuronal cells, interfering with synaptic transmission. The aggregation of Aβ in the hippocampus is associated with a decline in hippocampally - mediated cognitive abilities, which is a symptom of AD. AD has a strong correlation to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), which is defined by hyperinsulinemia and dysregulated glucose metabolism. It has been shown that insulin plays a role in both memory and learning …

Transcriptional Regulation Of Dksa P3 Promoter In Escherichia Coli, Chibuokem Ikwuazom

Biological Sciences

DksA, a global gene regulator, binds to RNA po lymerase to regulate transcription initiation in Escherichia coli . It negatively regulates transcription of some genes, such as those for ribosomal RNAs and fis , and positively regulates transcription of other genes, including genes involved in amino acid biosynthesis. Little is known about how DksA itself is regulated. Current work in our lab has shown three major promoters, a σ 70 dependent P 1 promoter and two σ 38 (RpoS) - dependent promoters (P 2 and P 3 ), regulate the transcription of dksA . More is current ly known about …

Mulitmodal Molecular Mechanisms Control Germline Stem Cell Differentiation In Drosophila, Mohamad Nasrallah May 2017

Mulitmodal Molecular Mechanisms Control Germline Stem Cell Differentiation In Drosophila, Mohamad Nasrallah

Biological Sciences

Stem cells have the intrinsic ability to divide to form a stem cell daughter, while also retaining the ability to self - renew. These qualities are critical , as improper stem cell maintenance is implicit in aging and provokes diseases such as cancer. We previously revealed that during Drosophila oogenesis, transcriptional silencing mediated by polar granule component (pgc) alters the germ line cell cycle to promote germ line stem cell (GSC) differentiation. O ur work with pgc suggested that cell cycle regulation might be an important general mecha nism to facilitate division GSCs into daughter stem cells (or cystoblast, CBs), …

The Intrinsic Motivation Of Immigrant Women In Male-Dominated Fields Of Study, Cassandra Edwards May 2017

The Intrinsic Motivation Of Immigrant Women In Male-Dominated Fields Of Study, Cassandra Edwards

Psychology

The present study examined the hypothesis that female students with first- or second-generation immigrant status (vs. their native-born peers) would be better prepared academically and have stronger intentions of pursuing and staying within their current field of study. We focused specifically on students in STEM versus non-STEM fields, as STEM fields are traditionally male-dominated. We predicted that female immigrant STEM majors in particular would not only perform better than their non-immigrant male peers, but also cope with stressors more efficiently and be less vulnerable to stereotype threat. We tested our predictions by assigning participants to one of two possible conditions …

Background: Common evidence-based practice (EBPs) elements can be observed across cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) manuals for commonly occurring disorders. Example EBP elements include exposure, cognitive restructuring, teaching active coping skills (e.g., relaxation), enhancing positive affect, and facilitating a positive working alliance. It is unclear if EBP elements are frequently delivered or prioritized in routine psychotherapy. Also, little is known about the prevalence or pervasiveness of EBP elements from the routine clients’ perspective. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess psychotherapy clients’ self-reported retrospective treatment experiences with regard to common EBP elements. Method: Participants (N = 592) …

Investigating The Roles Of Felt Obligation And Politics In The Context Of Procedural Justice-Outcome Relationships, Caitlin Briggs May 2017

Investigating The Roles Of Felt Obligation And Politics In The Context Of Procedural Justice-Outcome Relationships, Caitlin Briggs

Psychology

Social Exchange Theory positions employee felt obligation as a mechanism by which organizational justice leads to positive organizational outcomes such as decreased turnover and increased job satisfaction. However, little has been done to test the empirical value of this theoretical claim. Additionally, although organizational politics is generally negatively correlated with justice, investigation of the mechanism by which politics might influence justice is lacking. Here, I look at whether politics has a moderating role on procedural justice and felt obligation, and thus turnover intentions and job satisfaction, or in words, whether politics reduces the positive relationship between procedural justice and felt …

Irrational Eigenvalues Of The Discrete Laplacian: A Study Of Simplical Complexes, Brian Bollen May 2017

Irrational Eigenvalues Of The Discrete Laplacian: A Study Of Simplical Complexes, Brian Bollen

Psychology

We study the behavior of eigenvalues of the discrete Laplacian of an abstract simplicial complex K when subdividing a single face of K . We show that if K is a simplex, performing this kind of restricted subdivision twice on a single face produces irrational eigenvalues for the discrete Laplacian.

The Contributions Of Perceived Ethnic Discrimination And Rumination To Depression, Anxiety, And Anger In Emerging Adults, Alexis M. Lima May 2017

The Contributions Of Perceived Ethnic Discrimination And Rumination To Depression, Anxiety, And Anger In Emerging Adults, Alexis M. Lima

Psychology

Perceived ethnic discrimination (PED), a type of race-based social stress, is conceptualized as a subjective experience of discrimination based on phenotype, linguistic, or cultural characteristics. As an environmental stressor, it is associated with the same negative outcomes as other stressors such as greater depressive and anxious symptoms, poorer academic performance, and poorer health outcomes. Previous research has focused on PED’s association with mental and physical health outcomes, but cognitive factors (i.e., cognitive ruminations, coping strategies, executive functioning) that might mediate or moderate outcomes have received less attention. Moreover, while some research has investigated the associations of anger rumination and perceived …

Do Corporate Managers Time Stock Repurchases Effectively?, Michael Lorka May 2017

Do Corporate Managers Time Stock Repurchases Effectively?, Michael Lorka

Financial Analyst

This study examines the performance of share repurchases completed by corporate managers, and compares the implied performance of the purchases to a mythical alternative investment in the S&P 500 index, and the company’s industry sector. The “repurchase” portfolio benefits from managers’ significant information advantage over all other market participants. The data was collected from Compustat, and return, risk and risk adjusted metrics were calculated to provide a comparison of the two portfolios. Overall, the portfolio of repurchasing companies experienced lower returns than the broad index and respective industry sector, but the volatility for repurchasers was lower as well.

Determinants Of Profitability: Empirical Evidence From The Largest Global Banks, Anthony Iacobelli May 2017

Determinants Of Profitability: Empirical Evidence From The Largest Global Banks, Anthony Iacobelli

There is a significant difference in weight, triceps skinfolds, and subscapular skinfolds in all male age groups except for age …

Synthesis Of A Bifunctional Macrocycle, Hasina Noory May 2017

Synthesis Of A Bifunctional Macrocycle, Hasina Noory

Anthropology

Macrocycles are important organic ligands for encapsulating metal ions. This work describes the first step of a synthesis to create a bifunctional macrocyclic ligand suitable for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) studies. Cyclen is an organic macrocycle that contains twelve atoms total, with four nitrogen atoms incorporated into the cyclic backbone. Cyclen can be modified to coordinate a variety of metal ions by adding additional chelating arms. This synthesis is focused on functionalizing three of the donor nitrogens with carboxylate arms, while strategically leaving the fourth nitrogen available for further modification.

Differentiation Of Hair Using Atr Ft-Ir Spectroscopy: A Statistical Classification Of Dyed And Non-Dyed Hairs, Matthew S. Boll

Chemistry

Although hair is one of the most common and abundant types of evidence found at a crime scene, the current forensic analyses employed underutilize its full potential evidentiary value. Microscopy is the fundamental technique used to analyze forensic hair evidence, but even this routine and well-accepted method has limitations. In this study, non-dyed and dyed hairs from individuals varying in race, biological sex, and age, were analyzed using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform-infrared (ATR FT-IR) spectroscopy. Through the incorporation of multivariate statistical analysis, spectra collected from dyed and non-dyed hairs were differentiated with high accuracy. After hair spectra were determined …

Determining The Role Of Secondary Structure In Translational Control, Dhruv S. Patel May 2017

Determining The Role Of Secondary Structure In Translational Control, Dhruv S. Patel

Chemistry

The central dogma of cellular biology asserts that DNA is transcribed to mRNA, which in turn is translated to a protein. This simplistic conduit of gene expression is heavily regulated at multiple levels to ensure proper temporal and spatial expression of genes. One such mode of regulation occurs at the juncture at which RNAs are translated to proteins, known as translational regulation. mRNAs can be translationally regulated by trans-acting factors, such as RNA binding proteins (RBPs), and/or cis-acting factors. Regulation via these two modalities can depend on structure as well as RNA sequence. Secondary structures, such as stem loops, are …

The Relationship Between Defense Expenditures And Economic Growth: A Granger Causality Approach, Colin Manchester May 2017

The Relationship Between Defense Expenditures And Economic Growth: A Granger Causality Approach, Colin Manchester

Business/Business Administration

This paper examines the relationship between defense spending and economic growth in the United States of America between 1947 and 2016. Using quarterly data from the Federal Reserve of St. Louis Economic Data and the Granger Causality methodology, this study examines the potential two-way causality between defense spending and economic growth. The results suggest that over the longer time span of 6-7 years, Granger Causality was not seen between defense spending and economic growth. However, while analyzing incremental periods in smaller sections, there were differing findings about the nature of causality.
