In the relatively short time since my original paper was published (Vasavda, 2016), there have been numerous administrative changes in the treatment of undocumented immigrants in the United States. Moreover, immigration seems to have grown into more of a hot-button subject than ever, with the president of the United States making it one of his signature issues. Given President Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric, it is unsurprising that the conditions in immigrant detention centers have not improved since the publication fo m y original paper. This paper examines Schlegel's "Dialogue on Poesy" to demonstrate that, while Schlegel is responding to his own sociohistorical context, he is also providing a proposal for the role poetry could play in helping citizens achieve an ideal state and providing a defense against the concerns about and critiques of poetry in society, as expressed in Plato's treatment of the ancient myths.

The Counterfactual Account of compensation posits that descendants of victims are owed compensation as they are left worse off as a result of the acts of injustice perpetuated upon their ancestors (Nozick, 1974). There is a wide range of objections to the Counterfactual Account; I recognize that these are all issues but I will focus predominantly on showing why the Non-Identity Problem is not a valid objection to the account.

I want to raw attention to problems that close physical proximity between the driver and bystander can reveal in a new take on Judith Jarvis Thomson's well-known Trolly Problem. I apply Thomson's reasoning to hypothetical situations involving semi-autonomous, self-driving vehicles in order to highlight how complicated and counter-intuitive the distinctions between the two roles can become when physical distance is taken into account. This 'Tesla Problem' has clear implications for ethics and the laws governing autonomous vehicles, and they redound to how we should understand Thomson's original problem.

The spread of coins, which occurred throughout the archaic and classical periods of Greece, was a foundational advancement toward forms of the modern economy. Modern theory has sought to explain the invention of coins with a variety of narratives. Generally, these narratives fall into two broad categories: market-driven monetization or state-driven monetization. On the one hand, some theory argues that coins developed from reducing private transaction costs. PFAAs of different carbon chain lengths and ionic head groups exist, such as PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonic acid). Used without regulation in industry for decades, PFAAs only recently became recognized as contaminants of emerging concern, since they are bioaccumulative in organisms, persistent in the environment, and toxic. Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a psychiatric mood disorder that effects 1 in 10 women in the United States. There are relatively few behavioral studies looking at the association between PPD and self-esteem. There are even fewer studies looking at neuroimaging comparisons between PPD and self-esteem.. The goal of this study was to look at the neuroanatomical overlap of activated brain regions involved in both self-esteem and PPD processing. We hypothesized that the right amygdala, PCC, and insula would be involved in both processes.

Human follicle stimulating hormone (hFSH) is a gonadotropin responsible for the maturation of ovarian follicles in women and production of sperm in men. The receptor (hFSHR) is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR); a class of receptors found embedded in the cell membrane to receive the hormone resulting in initiation of a complex downstream signaling cascade. Through previous research in the Cohen lab, hFSHR has been shown to be located within compartments of the cell membrane known as lipid rafts. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis plays a primary role in stress response through the regulated secretion of the glucocorticoid hormone cortisol. Diseases of cortisol dysregulation such as Cushing’s syndrome (hypercortisolemia) and Addison’s Disease (hypocortisolemia) are both associated with depression. Based on this we, and others, have hypothesized that mutations in the genes for the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), the closely related mineralocorticoid receptor (MR), and regulatory proteins associated with cortisol or GR function may contribute to depression in the absence of hyper- or hypo-cortisolemia. The main ways in which manmade aquatic vehicles propel themselves are water jets and propellers, which are inconsistent with how underwater animals swim. The Scandinavian Caledonides are an orogenic belt formed when Baltica collided with Laurentia during the late Silurian to early Devonian (Scandian, ~426–390 Ma, Gee et al., 2008). The thrust sheets forming the belt are divided into the Lower, Middle, Upper, and Uppermost Allochthons derived, respectively, from the Baltican margin and regions progressively farther outboard. This study focuses on the Blåhø Nappe, part of the Middle Allochthon, which is generally presumed to have been from an Early Paleozoic volcanic arc off the Baltican margin. The Blåhø Nappe contains abundant igneous and sedimentary rocks, metamorphosed almost entirely at amphibolite facies, but contains …

Judicial review of agency rulemaking sits atop a nexus between all three branches of American government, the legislature, the executive, and the judiciary. Chevron v. NRDC (1984), a landmark case in administrative law, and its resulting doctrine of strong judicial deference to agencies in their interpretations of statute, are paradoxical in their creation. Although Chevron was decided at the height of Reagan-era deregulation, it greatly enhanced the power of administrative agencies, allowing them to reinterpret the meaning of their statutory directives as needed to justify changes to regulations with less scrutiny from the courts. Planning routes for recreational cyclists is challenging because they prefer longer more scenic routes, not the shortest one. This problem can be modeled as an instance of the Arc Orienteering Problem (AOP), a known NP-Hard optimization problem. Because no known algorithms exist to solve this optimization problem efficiently, we solve the AOP using heuristic algorithms which trade accuracy for speed. We implement and evaluate two different Iterated Local Search (ILS) heuristic algorithms using an open source routing engine called GraphHopper and the OpenStreetMap data set.
