Stable Water Isotopes Provide Insight Into The Spatial Variability Of As And U In Drinking Water Across The Northern Plains, Jacob Abbott Jun 2023

Stable Water Isotopes Provide Insight Into The Spatial Variability Of As And U In Drinking Water Across The Northern Plains, Jacob Abbott

Honors Theses

Arsenic (As) and uranium (U) contamination in drinking water affects millions of individuals across the US. This issue is particularly acute across rural populations where many people obtain drinking water from unregulated private wells. One specific location greatly affected by high levels of As and U in both surface and groundwater is the Northern Plains of the USA. However, the environmental and anthropogenic factors responsible for the mobilization and heterogeneous distribution of As and U in the waters of this region remain poorly characterized. Groundwater recharge sources and the flow path of water supplying surface water can strongly influence the …

Comparing Newtonian Mechanics, Special Relativity And General Relativity For Motion Near A Mass, Aqeel Ahmed Jun 2023

Comparing Newtonian Mechanics, Special Relativity And General Relativity For Motion Near A Mass, Aqeel Ahmed

Honors Theses

With both analytical and computational methods, we modeled an object's orbit around a massive object using Newtonian orbits, using special relativistic orbits, and finally using general relativistic orbits. We know that when an object orbits around a massive object, there are certain velocities and radii where the object will no longer orbit and fall into the massive object, in a correct orbit model we should expect to see this feature. This distinctive feature is not captured by our Newtonian model. With special relativity, the feature appears, however, special relativity contains disparities that do not correctly model the effect of gravity. …

The Role Of Nutrition In Breast And Colorectal Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy, Jillian Bove Jun 2023

Nutrition is important to sustain life. It is extremely significant for patients who are actively being treated with chemotherapy. The focus of this research is to understand how nutrition affects cancer patients. This includes the intake of beverages on breast and colorectal cancer patients. Research suggests women breast cancer patients and men colorectal cancer patients can overcome or lessen side effects from cancer treatment with a focus on nutrition. These side effects are most apparent when cancer patients are undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Unfortunately, there has been limited research on nutritional support for breast and colorectal cancer patients. Therefore this study …

Interrogating Historical Trauma Through The Lens Of Black And Indigenous Artists, Sophie Anne Brown Jun 2023

Interrogating Historical Trauma Through The Lens Of Black And Indigenous Artists, Sophie Anne Brown

Honors Theses

We live in a world wherein black, brown, and ethnic minorities are forced to navigate daily race-based stressors, including but not limited to discrimination, poverty, oppression, and micro-aggressions. These current events that are explicitly seen in areas such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada are, in part, the lasting consequences of historical trauma passed down through generations. Genocide, displacement, forced relocation, slavery, and the intentional destruction of cultural practices are deeply rooted in the fiber of our history. These past injustices are intrinsically linked to present events, wherein they have become part of our contemporary cultural narrative. …

Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs) allow individuals to operate technology using (typically consciously controllable) aspects of their brain activity. Auditory BCIs utilize principles of Auditory Event Related Potentials or Auditory Evoked Potentials as a reproducible controllable features that individuals can use to operate a BCI. These Auditory BCIs in their most basic format can allow users to answer yes or no questions by listening to either one auditory stimuli or the other. Current accuracy in intended response detection for these kinds of BCIs can be as good as mean accuracy of 77 \%. BCI research tends to optimize the computer side …

The Association Between Parenting Style And Birth Order In Relation To Functioning In College, Natalie Giordano Jun 2023

The Association Between Parenting Style And Birth Order In Relation To Functioning In College, Natalie Giordano

Honors Theses

Previous research surrounding birth order suggests that firstborn children tend to display higher levels of academic achievement than later born siblings. My research aimed to assess whether birth order is associated with Baumrind's (1971) parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, neglectful), with the inclusion of two measures of helicopter parenting (overprotective, over-involved parenting). The measures of helicopter parenting utilized were by LeMoyne & Buchanan (2011) and Schiffrin et al. (2014). My study explored how this potential association between birth order and parenting may mediate outcomes for college students, such as academic performance and party habits. 121 Union College students completed the …

Dame Sexo O Vete: Cómo La Adición De Mujeres Crean Una Narración Heteronormativa Y Sexista En Fresa Y Chocolate, Natalie Giordano

Honors Theses

This work examines the differences between the short story "El lobo, el bosque y el hombre nuevo" by Senel Paz (1990) and its film adaptation Fresa y Chocolate de Tomás Gutiérrez Alea y Juan Carlos Tabío Cuba (1993), with a focus on the expansion on and inclusion of two female characters. It argues that these differences build and promote a heterosexual narrative that was not intended in the original story. The context regarding the LBGTQ community, specifically the discrimination they faced during the Communist Revolution in Cuba, is given as a precursor to the subsequent analysis of the works. The …

Wage Dispersion And Individual Performance: Mlb Pitchers, Amanda Granato Jun 2023

Wage Dispersion And Individual Performance: Mlb Pitchers, Amanda Granato

Honors Theses

Major League Baseball is one of the most valuable sports leagues valued at $10 billion US dollars. While over 40% of payroll is allocated to pitchers, the wage disparity between starting pitchers alone is $7 million US dollars. The disparity between the max starting pitchers and the minimum relief pitchers is $20.5 million US dollars. Previous studies find that there is much evidence to support that as wage dispersion among a team increases, the overall team performance is negatively affected. In addition, there are some studies which find no correlation, or positive correlation between salary inequality and efficiency. Jewell and …

Evaluating The Impacts Of Accent And Semantic Context On Listening Effort, Avanti Khare Jun 2023

Evaluating The Impacts Of Accent And Semantic Context On Listening Effort, Avanti Khare

Honors Theses

Nonnative accented speech is associated with increased listening effort for English-monolingual listeners, even if the speech signal is intelligible. Semantic context is a global characteristic of English phrases that quantifies the degree to which words communicate a cohesive idea. Previous research suggests that semantic context may be used as a helping factor during speech perception in adverse conditions. The current work examines the relationship between speaker accent and semantic context using global semantic anomalies. Participants performed a randomly prompted recall task during lists of varying semantic context levels recorded by native and nonnative-accented speakers. Results are discussed in terms of …

This study aimed to see how meaningful eye gaze from a robot with a 2D face affects human-robot interaction when completing an object identification task. An experiment was performed to see whether directional eye gaze from a robot influences the time is takes a human participant to identify the correct shape in the correct color zone based on a verbal instruction. This was measured by comparing the mean response times across three different gaze conditions. Another goal of the study was to see if using human-like eye gaze …

Getting What You Deserve: A Philosophical And Sociological Analysis Of Punishment In America, Haley Martuscello Jun 2023

Getting What You Deserve: A Philosophical And Sociological Analysis Of Punishment In America, Haley Martuscello

Honors Theses

The U.S. Penal System is known to be one of the most punitive punishment systems in the world. Many discussions around the system's approach to punishment have often used either a sociological framework or philosophical one, but rarely use both. The purpose of this thesis is to use philosophical theories of punishment and sociological observations of the current U.S. penal system to appropriately analyze the system and determine what kind of approach to punishment the system uses and what approach it should use. To do so, the thesis lays the groundwork for such analysis by establishing that the purposes of …

Asking For It: An Examination Of Victim Blaming Reasons And Correlates, Jillian S. Ramey

Honors Theses

Previous research has demonstrated the relationship between masculine honor and just world beliefs on victim blaming of sexual assault victims. However, little research has investigated the specific reasons for that blame, nor how these reasons differ for male versus female victims. As such, we sought to examine how participants with higher levels of masculine honor beliefs and just world beliefs would respond to a news story depicting a sexual assault of either a male or female victim. Based on prior research on rape myths, participants read the news story and described what they had read, followed by items assessing the …

The Effect Of Weight Gain On The Neuromechanics Of Locust Jumps (Schistocerca Americana), Christopher Ringer Jun 2023

The Effect Of Weight Gain On The Neuromechanics Of Locust Jumps (Schistocerca Americana), Christopher Ringer

Honors Theses

During the adult reproductive stage, female locusts (Schistocerca americana) experience multiple ovigerous cycles during which they undergo significant weight gain. The magnitude of their weight change is thought to negatively impact the kinematics of the locust jump during the gravid phase. We hypothesized that this decrease in performance would result in an evolutionary pressure for female locusts to develop an intrinsic means to detect increases in body mass and respond with a modulation in their movement. Based on this hypothesis, we predicted that the female locusts would display a consistent jump performance in response to weight change, facilitated by a …

Honors Theses

Prior scholarship examining chronic illness experience within the United States is limited and fails to capture the experiences of college-age women living with type one diabetes (T1D). This study attempts to explore perceived stigma and social support available to college-age women with T1D in hopes to highlight the pressing need to utilize the sociological model to understand the emotional labor produced by the tensions existing between expectations and reality for the chronically ill within our ableist society. To do so, I performed a systematic review of existing research and cross-referenced this review with qualitative interviews of twelve present and former …

Liebau Pumping In Embryonic Hearts: A Rim-Piv Study Of Liebau Impedance Pumping In An Embryonic Heart Model, Natalie Shearing Jun 2023

Liebau Pumping In Embryonic Hearts: A Rim-Piv Study Of Liebau Impedance Pumping In An Embryonic Heart Model, Natalie Shearing

Honors Theses

This work describes the design and implementation of a fully functioning, optically accessible Liebau pump with a visualization of the flow that will be generated using refractive index matched particle image velocimetry (RIM-PIV). Liebau impedance pumping is a unique way of transporting fluid by simply compressing a flexible tube; no valves are needed. The compression mechanism used in this design is a cam and follower mechanism, chosen for its ability to controllably pinch the tube, driving the flow. In this work, RIM-PIV will be used to visualize the flow within the Liebau pump. To use this technique, the flexible tube …

Senatorial Partisanship Affects Racial Disparity In Federal Criminal Sentencing Outcomes: How The Federal Judicial Appointment Process Predicts Levels Of Racial Bias, Abigail Olivia Strauzer Jun 2023

Senatorial Partisanship Affects Racial Disparity In Federal Criminal Sentencing Outcomes: How The Federal Judicial Appointment Process Predicts Levels Of Racial Bias, Abigail Olivia Strauzer

Honors Theses

Despite the presence of sentencing guidelines, racial disparities in federal still exist. In this thesis, I hypothesize that the senators' partisanship and states ideologies affect racial disparities. This works through institutional factors and the context of the judges in how they decision make. In this study, I examine states through their senators and the ways in which senatorial courtesy influences the appointment of federal district court judges. The hypothesis looks into this influence and suggests that the more ideologically conservative a state is and its Senators are, the more likely there will be racial disparity in the federal district court …

Retrieval Practice And Context Reinstatement, Jason M. Ayala Jun 2023

Retrieval Practice And Context Reinstatement, Jason M. Ayala

Honors Theses

Retrieval practice is a powerful learning strategy, but the mechanism(s) behind it are not fully understood. One account of this "testing effect" (i.e., enhanced memory for information that was previously retrieved vs. restudied) is the episodic-context account (Karpicke et al., 2014). According to this theory, successful retrieval requires contextual reinstatement which updates the target memory representation to include features of the current test context along with features of the initial study context. The resulting composite trace provides varied features that are more likely to match those on the final test. However, the specific features necessary for reinstatement remain unclear. The …

Fighting For A Level Playing Field: The Reality Of Elite Women's Sports In Today's Modern Era, Rebecca Clayman Jun 2023

Fighting For A Level Playing Field: The Reality Of Elite Women's Sports In Today's Modern Era, Rebecca Clayman

Honors Theses

Sports makeup the very essence and lifeblood of American culture. In addition to being incredibly popular, sports dominate the mainstream media and are fiercely supported across all aspects of society. However, the gender hierarchy that exists in the United States subjects elite women in sports to a lesser status in which their abilities, strengths, and talents are seen as indefinitely inferior to their male counterparts. Exploring the reasoning behind these disparities is a major focus of my research in addition to showing how poorly women in sports are treated today. Previous studies indicate that institutionalized forms of sexism, hegemonic masculinity, …

Temperature And Direction-Changing Effects On The Agonistic Headbob Display Of Anolis Sagrei, Ronan Coughlin Jun 2023

Temperature And Direction-Changing Effects On The Agonistic Headbob Display Of Anolis Sagrei, Ronan Coughlin

Honors Theses

Anolis sagrei, or the brown anole, is a lizard endemic to the Antilles that produces headbob displays for territorial aggression and sexual attraction. It has been hypothesized that these displays are honest signals of body condition, so they are evolutionarily more likely to garner attention and a response from receivers. In this study, we looked at the effects of body temperature on the display by controlling the body temperature during territorial headbob displays. We examined whether the speed (or abruptness) of display motion patterns was altered by changes in body temperature. In another experiment we tested whether or not the …
