The French language has encountered much controversy as early as the Renaissance. The most recent debates concern the representation of gender and/or lack thereof. As a gender based language, French is grammatically constructed through the rigid boundaries of male and female genders. As such, it does not allow for the self expression or representation of anyone identifying outside of these categories. Consequently, gender neutrality is currently a topic of public dispute, demonstrating the controversial nature of the French language. Diversity Equity and Inclusion initiatives have increased in the last decade and have become an essential aspect of all types of institutions, including higher education. Trinity being no stranger, with their Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion being established in 2018. Diversity Equity and Inclusion at its root was created to uphold white supremacy and those in power of societal institutions. White Supremacy is at the foundation of higher education and is pervasive in all of its aspects.
