Missing link in IPE
- Ensuring that all health care professionals recognize the importance of an interprofessional practice model for patient-centered care is paramount in today’s health care arena.
- While, the use of IPE experiences is not new in the academy linking those experiences to rich clinical experiences is less frequently observed.
- Academic faculty partnering with clinical residency programs to design learning environments that capitalize upon the strengths of both can create an insightful IPE educational experience for students during their didactic training and support IPP.
- This partnership provides mentorship for residents transitioning from their role as clinicians to that of …

This presentation will describe the development of an interprofessional education (IPE) clinical simulation experience designed for teaching and evaluating teamwork and communication skills. This experience uses the University of Toronto’s Centre of IPE’s Curriculum concepts of Exposure and Immersion as its framework and builds on existing IPE resources from the University of Washington and the Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) program. The program focuses on medical and nurse practitioner (NP) students learning with and about each other while they complete an assessment and health teaching for a patient with severe mental illness and medical …

The Influence Of Professional Identity Formation On The Attitudes Of Healthcare Professional Students Toward Interprofessionalism, Cynthia L. Stull, Bsdh, Mdh, Christine Blue, Bsdh, Ms
JCIPE Conference
The objective of this study was to quantify first-year health professional students’ attitudes toward their own and other professions following an interprofessional education (IPE) course. Additionally, this study sought to investigate the relationship between strength of professional identity and attitudes toward other professions.
Professional identity, along with the stereotypes that students hold of other professions, are key factors influencing IPE. Expectations are that attitudes towards other professions will improve following participation in an introductory IPE experience. However, theory surrounding professional identity formation suggests this expectation may be premature.
In the Fall of 2011, using a pre/post-test design, researchers administered the …

JCIPE Conference
Background
• What we ‘know’
– Literature identifies demonstrated change in attitudes as a result of learning with, about and from each other (Barr, et.al., 2000)
– Similar experiences at UK
• Less understood:
– What if students are required to participate if the primary motivation of the experience is not IPE?
– What does the process of interprofessional development look like?
• Relevant vectors for IPE
– Clinical is idea
– Consider global health as an appropriate context

The Use of Standardized Patient Simulation for Interprofessional Teaching of Palliative Care Communication Skills
• Children who receive palliative care services are affected by illnesses that are different in nature and number from those that typically affect adult recipients.
• Interdisciplinary/Interprofessional teams are the norm:
• Special knowledge of pediatric developmental, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions round out the comprehensive palliative care of pediatric patients.
• Even symptom management requires unique assessment tools.
