This medical student primer discusses general thoracic surgery, which involves treating pathologies involving all structures in the thorax except the heart, thoracic aorta, great vessels, and spine.

Otologic Manifestations In The Setting Of Seronegative Small Vessel Vasculitis: A Case Report, Kathleen Gillmore, Samiat Awosanya, Ayan Kumar, Catherine Teskin, Rebecca Chiffer Mar 2023

Otologic Manifestations In The Setting Of Seronegative Small Vessel Vasculitis: A Case Report, Kathleen Gillmore, Samiat Awosanya, Ayan Kumar, Catherine Teskin, Rebecca Chiffer

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Some patients with autoimmune disease will experience otologic symptoms, such as pain and hearing loss. We present a patient with ANCA-associated vasculitis who required surgery for a suspicious mastoid lesion associated with her disease.

Induction Techniques That Reduce Redistribution Hypothermia: A Prospective, Randomized, Controlled, Single Blind Effectiveness Study., Jonathan V. Roth, Leonard E. Braitman, Lacy H. Hunt Nov 2019

Induction Techniques That Reduce Redistribution Hypothermia: A Prospective, Randomized, Controlled, Single Blind Effectiveness Study., Jonathan V. Roth, Leonard E. Braitman, Lacy H. Hunt

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

BACKGROUND: While much effort has been devoted to correcting intraoperative hypothermia, less attention has been directed to preventing redistribution hypothermia. In this study, we compared three different anesthetic induction techniques to standard IV propofol inductions (control) in their effect on reducing redistribution hypothermia.

METHODS: Elective, afebrile patients, age 18 to 55 years, were randomly assigned to one of four groups (n = 50 each). Group "INH/100" was induced with 8% sevoflurane in 100% oxygen, Group "INH/50" with 8% sevoflurane in 50% oxygen and 50% nitrous oxide, Group "PROP" with 2.2 mg/kg propofol, and Group "Phnl/PROP" with 2.2 mg/kg propofol immediately …

Allergic Contact Dermatitis To 2-Octyl Cyanoacrylate After Surgical Repair: Humidity As A Potential Factor, Avi Bitterman, Karanjit Sandhu

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Allergic contact dermatitis to 2-octyl cyanoacrylate (Dermabond; Ethicon, Somerville, NJ) after surgical repair is an extremely rare condition with few reported cases. In recent years, contact dermatitis to Dermabond has been reported with increasing frequency.Cyanoacrylates are the most commonly used surgical adhesives and rely on their rapid polymerization to prevent sensitization from antigen presenting cells (APCs), because APCs are only capable of monomeric recognition of cyanoacrylates. It is thought that arid climates may contribute to increased sensitization of cyanoacrylates because water drives the polymerization reaction, decreasing the number of monomers capable of recognition by APCs. With less water present in …
