Wetland research in northern Belize provides the earliest evidence for development of agriculture in the Maya Lowlands. Pollen data confirm the introduction of maize and manioc before 3000 B.C. Dramatic deforestation, beginning ca. 2500 B.C. and intensifying in wetland environments ca. 1500-1300 B.C., marks an expansion of agriculture, which occurred in the context of a mixed foraging economy. By 1000 B.C. a rise in groundwater levels led farmers to construct drainage ditches coeval with the emergence of Maya complex society ca. 1000-400 B.C. Field manipulations often involved minor modifications of natural hummocks. Canal systems are not as extensive in northern …

Infinite Period And Hopf Bifurcations For The Ph-Regulated Oscillations In A Semibatch Reactor (H2O2-Cu2+-S2O2-3-–Naoh System), Peter E. Strizhak, John A. Pojman Sep 1996

Infinite Period And Hopf Bifurcations For The Ph-Regulated Oscillations In A Semibatch Reactor (H2O2-Cu2+-S2O2-3-–Naoh System), Peter E. Strizhak, John A. Pojman

Faculty Publications

Dynamic behavior of the pH‐regulated oscillations has been studied for the hydrogen peroxide oxidation of thiosulfate ions in the presence of trace amounts of copper(II) ions in a semibatch reactor. A solution of 0.08 M Na2S2O3 and 0.112 M NaOH was flowed at 0.160 mL/min into 300 mL of solution containing the H2O2 and Cu2+ in a vessel. There exists a critical value of the H2O2 or Cu2+ concentrations below which the system does not oscillate. The oscillations appear due to an infinite period bifurcation at …

Sol-Gel Phase Transitions In Thermoreversible Gels: Onset Of Gelation And Melting, Y. Liu, R.B. Pandey Jul 1996

Sol-Gel Phase Transitions In Thermoreversible Gels: Onset Of Gelation And Melting, Y. Liu, R.B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

A Monte Carlo simulation model is propsed to study the phase transition and the structural evolution of thermoreversible gels with the coexistence of phase separation and gelation processes. Our model includes the mobility of all the species and the reversibilty of bonds of the clusters formed due to cross-linking reactions. These features provide a more realistic depiction of a polymer-solvent system. We attempt to elucidate the effects of interactions, solvents, polymer fraction, etc. on the phase behaviors of the thermoreversible gel. Sol-to-gel transition is studied in detail as a function of temperature, and the related critical exponents are evaluated. Two …

Morphometry Of Juvenile And Subadult Loligo Pealei And L. Plei From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Guillermo Sánchez, Harriet M. Perry, Christine B. Trigg, Michael Vecchione, Clyde Roper, Patricia M. Biesot

Two species of Loligo are abundant in northern Gulf waters: the long-finned squid, Loligo pealei. and the arrow squid, Loligo plei. Variability within species and similarities between the species often hamper accurate identification. The two species more closely resemble each other in areas of sympatry. and there is overlap in almost all of the diagnostic characters. Small specimens of Loligo are not easily identified. and there are few studies detailing their morphometry. Because of the taxonomic uncertainties associated with the identification of juveniles and subadults of L. pealei and L. plei, the species were differentiated by isoelectric …
