Examination Of Initial Evidence For Emdr As A Treatment For Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Daniel Talbot Jan 2021

Examination Of Initial Evidence For Emdr As A Treatment For Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Daniel Talbot

Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating psychological condition that impacts millions of people globally. The front-line psychological intervention for OCD is exposure/response prevention (ERP), however, many individuals do not respond to this treatment approach. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a new therapeutic option which could be effective in treating OCD. This review examined the initial evidence for the effectiveness of EMDR in reducing OCD symptoms. Nine studies were included in the review, including six case studies and three group studies. Results indicate that EMDR is a promising candidate for treating OCD, with all studies showing EMDR therapy resulted …

The Archaeology Of Resilience: A Case Study From Peel Town, Western Australia, 1829-30., Lauren Tomlinson, Shane Burke Jan 2021

The Archaeology Of Resilience: A Case Study From Peel Town, Western Australia, 1829-30., Lauren Tomlinson, Shane Burke

Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

This paper describes the archaeology of one family’s tolerance to the stressors associated with the settlement of a new place. Artifacts associated with the maintenance of clothing suggest that a British family newly arrived at the Swan River colony in the southwest of Australia had the ability to remain composed during a period of reduced resources and psychological strain. The family’s ability to resist stress was probably the result of the social knowledge gained during previous experiences with internal migration in the British Isles during a time of high social dislocation.

Objective: Height is a significant, yet under-studied dimension of body dissatisfaction in men. The present study examined the relationship between height dissatisfaction, height, muscle and fat dissatisfaction, body ideals, and eating disorder symptoms in men.

Participants and methods: Participants were a sample of male undergraduate Australian students (N = 224) who were administered self-report measures of height, muscle, and fat dissatisfaction, eating disorder symptoms, and muscle and body fat body-ideals, and reported their height.

Results: Results showed that height, muscle dissatisfaction, and desired muscularity were important for explaining height dissatisfaction. Additionally, although eating disorder symptoms did not uniquely predict …

Male Figural Rating Scales: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Daniel Talbot, John Cass, Evelyn Smith Jan 2020

Male Figural Rating Scales: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Daniel Talbot, John Cass, Evelyn Smith

Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Figural rating scales are tools used to measure male body dissatisfaction. The present review aimed to examine the design and psychometric properties of male figural rating scales and make recommendations based on findings. Relevant databases were systematically searched for studies that had developed and validated male figural rating scales. Twenty studies were included in this review. Figural rating scales differed in terms of the number of images represented and type of stimuli used (hand-drawn silhouettes, hand-drawn figures, computer-rendered figures, and photograph figures). Reliability and validity evidence varied greatly in strength across all scales. Four of the 20 scales included a …

Variable Tree Establishment In Bauxite Mine Restoration In South-West Australia Linked To Rainfall Distribution, Seasonal Temperatures And Seed Rain, Tai White-Toney, Dylan Korczynskyj, Andrew Grigg, Max Bulsara Jan 2019

Variable Tree Establishment In Bauxite Mine Restoration In South-West Australia Linked To Rainfall Distribution, Seasonal Temperatures And Seed Rain, Tai White-Toney, Dylan Korczynskyj, Andrew Grigg, Max Bulsara

Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Reasons for variable establishment of Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata D. Don ex Sm.) and Marri (Corymbia calophylla (Lindl). K. D. Hill & L. A. S. Johnson) on restored forest sites after bauxite mining in south‐west Australia are not well understood. To refine restoration outcomes, we compiled tree seedling density establishment data from surveys of 654 previously mined sites restored between 1998 and 2017, and applied generalised linear models to discriminate the effects of 24 climatic and restoration practice variables. Final models explained 50% and 31% of the variation in Jarrah and Marri density, respectively. Broadcast seeding and fertiliser rates …

"I Should Have Known". The Perceptual Barriers Faced By Mental Health Practitioners In Recognizing And Responding To Their Own Burnout Symptoms, Marieke Ledingham, P Standen, Chris Skinner, Robbie Busch

Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Studies have shown burnout to be a significant problem in the mental health field, causing workers serious health problems and reducing quality of care provided to clients. Yet despite mental health practitioners’ training in supporting others’ emotional health, they may be reluctant to seek help for burnout symptoms. This paper addresses this paradox by showing how human cognitive processes could act as powerful blocks to the recognition of and response to burnout. Fifty-five mental health practitioners’ beliefs and perceptions about burnout were examined using qualitative interview and survey data interpreted through a phenomenological perspective on attribution theory. The study identified …

Biodiversity Offsets Can Be A Valuable Tool In Achieving Sustainable Development: Developing A Holistic Model For Biodiversity Offsets That Incorporates Environmental, Social And Economic Aspects Of Sustainable Development, Linda Abdo, Annabeth Kemp, Grey Coupland, Sandy Griffin Jan 2019

Biodiversity Offsets Can Be A Valuable Tool In Achieving Sustainable Development: Developing A Holistic Model For Biodiversity Offsets That Incorporates Environmental, Social And Economic Aspects Of Sustainable Development, Linda Abdo, Annabeth Kemp, Grey Coupland, Sandy Griffin

Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

The interpretation and use of biodiversity offsets in planning and development is a contentious issue because they rarely encompass each of the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainable development. While currently agreed best practice for biodiversity offsets includes consideration of scope, scale, location, timing and duration, and monitoring, current literature on these components does not consider all aspects of sustainable development. Furthermore, much of the current agreed best practice focusses on the design of biodiversity offsets, without consideration of ongoing management or end-of-life. This manuscript reviews current best practice for biodiversity offsets, giving consideration to the environmental, social and …

Discrete Projective Minimal Surfaces, Alan Mccarthy, Wolfgang K. Schief Jan 2018

Discrete Projective Minimal Surfaces, Alan Mccarthy, Wolfgang K. Schief

Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

We propose a natural discretisation scheme for classical projective minimal surfaces. We follow the classical geometric characterisation and classification of projective minimal surfaces and introduce at each step canonical discrete models of the associated geometric notions and objects. Thus, we introduce discrete analogues of classical Lie quadrics and their envelopes and classify discrete projective minimal surfaces according to the cardinality of the class of envelopes. This leads to discrete versions of Godeaux-Rozet, Demoulin and Tzitzéica surfaces. The latter class of surfaces requires the introduction of certain discrete line congruences which may also be employed in the classification of discrete projective …

The Chloroplast Rna Helicase Ise2 Is Required For Multiple Chloroplast Rna Processing Steps In Arabidopsis Thaliana, K Bobik, T Mccray, B Ernest, J Fernandez, K Howell, T Lane, M Staton, T Burch-Smith

Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

INCREASED SIZE EXCLUSION LIMIT2 (ISE2) is a chloroplast-localized RNA helicase that is indispensable for proper plant development. Chloroplasts in leaves with reduced ISE2expression have previously been shown to exhibit reduced thylakoid contents and increased stromal volume, indicative of defective development. It has recently been reported that ISE2 is required for the splicing of group II introns from chloroplast transcripts. The current study extends these findings, and presents evidence for ISE2’s role in multiple aspects of chloroplast RNA processing beyond group II intron splicing. Loss of ISE2 from Arabidopsis thaliana leaves resulted in defects in C-to-U RNA editing, altered accumulation of …

On The Combinatorics Of Demoulin Transforms And (Discrete) Projective Minimal Surfaces, A Mccarthy, W Schief Jan 2017

On The Combinatorics Of Demoulin Transforms And (Discrete) Projective Minimal Surfaces, A Mccarthy, W Schief

Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

The classical Demoulin transformation is examined in the context of discrete differential geometry. We show that iterative application of the Demoulin transformation to a seed projective minimal surface generates a Z 2 lattice of projective minimal surfaces. Known and novel geometric properties of these Demoulin lattices are discussed and used to motivate the notion of lattice Lie quadrics and associated discrete envelopes and the definition of the class of discrete projective minimal and Q-surfaces (PMQ-surfaces). We demonstrate that the even and odd Demoulin sublattices encode a two-parameter family of pairs of discrete PMQ-surfaces with the property that one discrete PMQ-surface …

Differentiation Of Self: Enhancing Therapist Resilience When Working With Relational Trauma, Linda Mackay Jan 2017

Differentiation Of Self: Enhancing Therapist Resilience When Working With Relational Trauma, Linda Mackay

Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Clinicians are charged with being diligent in gaining competency in the latest trauma‐informed interventions when working with relational trauma. This may invest therapists with an overresponsibility that is not only overwhelming and unrealistic, but serves to reduce autonomous functioning in family members. Therefore, clinicians need to become clear about what they are responsible for and what they are not, particularly when family members present as irresponsible or too anxious to think and act more effectively. Using a case vignette, this paper discusses how a clinician's focus on increasing their differentiation of self, a concept embeded in Bowen family systems theory, …

The Use Of Surveyors’ Field Notes In Historical Archaeology Research, Shane Burke Jan 2017

The Use Of Surveyors’ Field Notes In Historical Archaeology Research, Shane Burke

Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

This paper provides a primer that unlocks data in surveyors’ field notes. Surveyors’ field books contain copious data about cultural and natural features, but the techniques surveyors used to record information makes the data difficult to understand and therefore surveyors’ field books are underused. This paper examines the different styles surveyors used in data collection, and it shows through case studies how it can be deciphered. It also illustrates how data in field books overcomes common map interpretation problems such as scale constraints, determining the precise dimensions of features and silent updating.

The Complete Sequence Of The Acacia Ligulata Chloroplast Genome Reveals A Highly Divergent Clpp1 Gene, A Williams, L Boykin, K Howell, P Nevill, I Small

Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Legumes are a highly diverse angiosperm family that include many agriculturally important species. To date, 21 complete chloroplast genomes have been sequenced from legume crops confined to the Papilionoideae subfamily. Here we report the first chloroplast genome from the Mimosoideae, Acacia ligulata, and compare it to the previously sequenced legume genomes. The A. ligulata chloroplast genome is 158,724 bp in size, comprising inverted repeats of 25,925 bp and single-copy regions of 88,576 bp and 18,298 bp. Acacia ligulata lacks the inversion present in many of the Papilionoideae, but is not otherwise significantly different in terms of gene and repeat content. …
