The Impact Of Prejudice On Women's Wellbeing: A Moderated-Mediation Rejection Identification Model On Feminist Identity, Liana Shaw May 2024

The Impact Of Prejudice On Women's Wellbeing: A Moderated-Mediation Rejection Identification Model On Feminist Identity, Liana Shaw

Honors College

The study’s purpose was to assess sexism’s impact on women’s wellbeing based on the Rejection-Identification Model (Branscombe et al., 1999), in which perceived prejudice increases group identification, which in turn buffers the negative consequences of prejudice on wellbeing. Surveys were administered via Qualtrics. Using PROCESS analyses in SPSS, Study 1 (n = 1,083) investigated whether or not these relationships between prejudice, group identification, and wellbeing were moderated by feminist identity (Model 59; Hayes, 2018). Results showed that while women higher in feminist identity do experience greater depression in response to perceived prejudice, they also have a significantly stronger relationship between …

Inclusivity In Combat Amputee Research: An Analysis Of Underrepresented Populations, Victoria Eichorn Apr 2023

Inclusivity In Combat Amputee Research: An Analysis Of Underrepresented Populations, Victoria Eichorn

Honors College

Females and minorities are two underrepresented communities in a multitude of areas. The two areas that are of interest to this paper are: clinical research and the military. The female population, in particular, was examined because of two policy changes that took place in 2016: the lift of the ban on females in combat positions and the requirement that sex be investigated as a biological variable in scientific research. Therefore, one focus of this study was to examine whether these policy changes led to increased representation of women. Lacking access to databases containing the data of interest, a modified meta-analysis …

Fighting For Home: Northern New England Women And The Civil War, Savannah A. Clark May 2022

Fighting For Home: Northern New England Women And The Civil War, Savannah A. Clark

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the experiences of Northern New England women during the Civil War. Though these women were physically distant from the frontlines, the war came to their doorsteps. The war challenged and changed the physical and idealized space of the household and women’s role within it. This thesis examines how women experienced, resisted, or enacted wartime changes to household space. Through an examination of letters written by women, this study argues that, despite the disruptions of the war and the absence of male family members, Northern New England women fought to protect their homes from change.

Women used a …

Examining Women's Psychophysiological Responses Under Increasingly Obvious Sexism, Shelby Helwig May 2022

Examining Women's Psychophysiological Responses Under Increasingly Obvious Sexism, Shelby Helwig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When women experience sexism, it may at first be subtle and difficult to label only becoming clearer over time. Sexism is often ambiguous in nature and experienced over an extended period; therefore, studying sexism as it occurs in daily life is crucial to extending our understanding of how women cope with discrimination. Past research has shown that women may experience maladaptive physiological responses when exposed to various forms of sexism. The current study investigated women’s cardiovascular reactivity and recovery responses to prolonged, increasingly obvious sexism. Women evaluated resumes in a mock search committee meeting with two male confederates whose statements …

A Comprehensive Model Of Stress-Induced Binge Eating: The Role Of Cognitive Restraint, Negative Affect, And Impulsivity In Binge Eating As A Response To Stress, Rachael M. Huff Aug 2020

A Comprehensive Model Of Stress-Induced Binge Eating: The Role Of Cognitive Restraint, Negative Affect, And Impulsivity In Binge Eating As A Response To Stress, Rachael M. Huff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As obesity-related health issues account for the leading number of deaths in America, and these illnesses are even more prevalent in those that binge eat, treating obese individuals with Binge Eating Disorder (BED) has become a matter of life and death. Stress, negative affect, cognitive restraint, and impulsivity have all been implicated in binge eating symptomatology, suggesting that these may be key variables to consider when developing a comprehensive model (Groesz et. al., 2012; Friese et. al., 2015; Galanti et. al., 2007; Gay et al., 2008; Racine et. al., 2015; Leehr et. al., 2015). This project aims to further examine …

Tangled Up: Women’S Experiences In Mathematics, Lori Loftin Dec 2017

Tangled Up: Women’S Experiences In Mathematics, Lori Loftin

Honors College

This thesis is a bridge between two disciplines: Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Mathematics. The first portion of the work synthesizes both theory and previously done studies to describe the state of women in mathematics as a whole, as well as historicizing the role of women in mathematics. Obstacles to the full and equal participation of women in mathematics are examined through a feminist lens. The second part of the thesis is a feminist biography crafted from an interview with a professor of mathematics, Dr. Erica Flapan. This provides information about her personal experiences as a woman in mathematics …

“Friendship, Sweet Soother Of My Cares!”: Women, Religion, And Power In The Diary Of Sarah Connell Ayer, Shannon M. Risk Apr 2009

“Friendship, Sweet Soother Of My Cares!”: Women, Religion, And Power In The Diary Of Sarah Connell Ayer, Shannon M. Risk

Maine History

The diary of Sarah Connell Ayer (1791-1835) reveals the motivations of a woman caught up in the Second Great Awakening that spread across New England in the early nineteenth century. Ayer arrived in Portland in 1811 and immediately sought out a circle of female friends who espoused the same desires as did she. She joined with other church women in challenging the boundaries of Republican Motherhood ,and under the veil of the church, helped to minister in the greater Portland society. This female church culture helped women like Ayer get through the many pitfalls of womanhood in the early nineteenth century, …

"In Order To Establish Justice": The Nineteenth-Century Woman Suffrage Movements Of Maine And New Brunswick, Shannon M. Risk Jan 2009

"In Order To Establish Justice": The Nineteenth-Century Woman Suffrage Movements Of Maine And New Brunswick, Shannon M. Risk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study of the nineteenth-century woman suffrage movements in Maine and New Brunswick brings to light the struggles of Americans and Canadians to define a wider democracy and citizenry amid times of profound socio-economic changes. Targeting the struggle for the female vote allows the historian to explore time-honored ideas about womanhood, manhood, and membership in a national political body. In the Borderlands of Maine and New Brunswick, a place where historians see cultural connections, the border loomed large. Borderlands historians have virtually ignored women’s political behavior in this region. This study will demonstrate that although Maine and New Brunswick women …
