Thermal And Mechanical Numerical Modeling Of Extrusion-Based 3d Printed Reinforced Polymers For Selecting Manufacturing Process Parameters, Sunil Bhandari Dec 2021

Thermal And Mechanical Numerical Modeling Of Extrusion-Based 3d Printed Reinforced Polymers For Selecting Manufacturing Process Parameters, Sunil Bhandari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Extrusion-based 3D printing of thermoplastic polymer composites manufactures parts that have nonhomogenous, orthotropic, and process-dependent macro-scale material properties. As a part of the dissertation, research works were carried out to: • improve the interlayer mechanical properties and reduce the orthotropy, • use experimentally homogenized orthotropic material properties to numerically model the mechanical behavior of the non-homogenous orthotropic 3D printed parts, • create an efficient numerical thermal model to predict the process-dependent thermal history of the 3D printed part, and • aid the manufacturing process by selecting a suitable set of processing parameters based on a simplified sequentially coupled thermomechanical model. …

The Design And Validation Of A Uav Propeller Intended For Extremely Low Reynolds Number Environments, Benjamin Hebert Dec 2020

The Design And Validation Of A Uav Propeller Intended For Extremely Low Reynolds Number Environments, Benjamin Hebert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mars exploration and UAV development have both advanced significantly over the past century, and are now being considered in tandem. Currently needed are UAV propellers that can operate in the Martian atmosphere. Flow will be in the range of Re < 20,000, creating extreme conditions not typically examined. A Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT) algorithm is developed using a variety of corrections designed specifically for low Reynolds number and rotational flows. Due to both the simplicity of the basic BEMT formulation, corrections are easy to put in place and often necessary to achieve accurate estimates. Aerodynamic coefficients are determined from XFOIL code, and have questionable accuracy in this regime. To account for this, a correction model is developed by comparing XFOIL results to experimental results of airfoils at low Re. This is all tested against a previous low Re propeller experiment. The results of this comparison are used to adjust the values in the correction, to produce more accurate results for theoretical design.

From here, a design philosophy for the propeller is developed using established methods and previous experimental data. High thrust is prioritized, with efficiency being a secondary concern. A hard mach limit of 0.7 is set to avoid major drag penalties, limiting the usable ranges of RPM and radius. Airfoil designs are then examined, based on previous designs, theoretical intuition, and …

Uav 6dof Simulation And Kalman Filter For Localizing Radioactive Sources, John G. Goulet May 2020

Uav 6dof Simulation And Kalman Filter For Localizing Radioactive Sources, John G. Goulet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) expand the available mission-space for a wide range of budgets. Using MATLAB, this project has developed a six degree of freedom (6DOF) simulation of UAV flight, an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), and an algorithm for localizing radioactive sources using low-cost hardware. The EKF uses simulated low-cost instruments in an effort to estimate the UAV state throughout simulated flight.

The 6DOF simulates aerodynamics, physics, and controls throughout the flight and provides outputs for each time step. Additionally, the 6DOF simulation offers the ability to control UAV flight via preset waypoints or in realtime via keyboard input.

Modeling, Simulation, And Validation Of Process-Structure-Property Relationships In Fused Filament Fabrication, Aaron Grant Dec 2019

Modeling, Simulation, And Validation Of Process-Structure-Property Relationships In Fused Filament Fabrication, Aaron Grant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As additive manufacturing (AM) grows in popularity, the need for better simulation tools to predict the process-structure-property relationships of AM parts becomes ever more necessary to employ the technology in design of functional parts with varying degrees of complexity and performance requirements. Many simulation tools and techniques have been developed that aim to achieve this goal, and the main purpose of this research is to explore how well different simulation tools and modeling approaches can capture various AM-specific features such as inter-raster and end-of raster voids, and residual stresses induced by dissimilar rates of thermal expansion. Process simulation of fused …

A Tale Of Two Bays: The Development And Applications Of The Saco And Casco Modeling Project, Stephen M. Moore Aug 2019

A Tale Of Two Bays: The Development And Applications Of The Saco And Casco Modeling Project, Stephen M. Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis details the development and application of a finite-volume, hydrodynamic model of Saco and Casco Bays. The primary study conducted herein focused on coupling storm simulations with sea level rise (SLR) to identify vulnerabilities of the two bays. The February 1978 Northeaster and an April freshwater discharge event in 2007 following the Patriot’s Day Storm were modeled by utilizing the Finite-Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM). Both events were repeatedly simulated under SLR scenarios ranging from 0 to 7 ft. Modeled storm responses were identified from the 1978 blizzard simulations and were tracked across SLR scenarios. By comparing changes in …

Paper Structure Formation Simulation, Tyler R. Seekins May 2019

Paper Structure Formation Simulation, Tyler R. Seekins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

On the surface, paper appears simple, but closer inspection yields a rich collection of chaotic dynamics and random variables. Predictive simulation of paper product properties is desirable for screening candidate experiments and optimizing recipes but existing models are inadequate for practical use. We present a novel structure simulation and generation system designed to narrow the gap between mathematical model and practical prediction. Realistic inputs to the system are preserved as randomly distributed variables. Rapid fiber placement (~1 second/fiber) is achieved with probabilistic approximation of chaotic fluid dynamics and minimization of potential energy to determine flexible fiber conformations. Resulting digital packed …

Modeling And Simulation Of The Thermoforming Process In Thermoplastic-Matrix Composite Materials, Philip M. Bean Dec 2018

Modeling And Simulation Of The Thermoforming Process In Thermoplastic-Matrix Composite Materials, Philip M. Bean

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thermoplastic-matrix composite materials have unique advantages over traditional thermosets including faster processing, improved fracture toughness, and recyclability. These and other benefits have caused increasing interest in the use of these materials in both aerospace and automotive industries. Due to the differences in behavior, these materials require a different type of manufacturing process to thermoset matrix composites. This manufacturing process generally involves using pre manufactured tape-layers. These layers, containing both thermoplastic-matrix and fiber-reinforcement, are aligned to the desired orientation, and stacked up into a “tailored blank” using an automated tape layup machine. They are then heated to the thermoplastic melting temperature …

Integrated Environment And Proximity Sensing For Uav Applications, Shawn S. Brackett Aug 2017

Integrated Environment And Proximity Sensing For Uav Applications, Shawn S. Brackett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), or “drone” applications expand, new methods for sensing, navigating and avoiding obstacles need to be developed. The project applies an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to a simulated quadcopter vehicle though Matlab in order to estimate not only the vehicle state but the world state around the vehicle. The EKF integrates multiple sensor readings from range sensors, IMU sensors, and radiation sensors and combines this information to optimize state estimates. The result is an estimated world map to be used in vehicle navigation and obstacle avoidance.

The simulation handles the physics behind the vehicle flight. As …
