Integration Of Material Characterization, Thermoforming Simulation, And As-Formed Structural Analysis For Thermoplastic Composites, Philip M. Bean, Roberto A. Lopez-Anido, Senthil Vel
Civil Engineering Faculty Scholarship
An improved simulation-based thermoforming design process based on the integration of material characterization and as-formed structural analysis is proposed. The tendency of thermoplastic composites to wrinkle during forming has made simulation critical to optimized manufacturing, but the material models required are complex and time consuming to create. A suite of experimental methods has been developed for measurement of several required properties of the molten thermoplastic composite. These methods have the potential to enhance thermoplastic composites manufacturing by simplifying and expediting the process. These material properties have been verified by application to thermomechanical forming predictions using commercial simulation software. The forming …

Investigating The Stability Of Observed Low Semi-Major Axis Exoplanetary Systems With Hypothetical Outer Planets Using The Program Mercury6, Kendall Butler
Honors College
This project investigates the stability of observed planetary systems, and whether this stability remains in the presence of additional outer planets. This made use of the program Mercury6, an n-body integrator that computes the changes in planetary orbits over time. The Systems HD 136352, GJ 9827, and HD 7924 were studied with initial conditions taken from the available observational data. This information was curated using the online NASA Exoplanet archive of confirmed exoplanets. With these initial conditions, Mercury6 computed the changing planetary orbits of each system for 5 million years. For each of these systems, a single outer planet, which …
Energy Modeling Of Wireless Sensor Nodes Based On Petri Nets, Ali Shareef, Yifeng Zhu
Energy Modeling Of Wireless Sensor Nodes Based On Petri Nets, Ali Shareef, Yifeng Zhu
Graduate Student Scholarly and Creative Submissions
Energy minimization is of great importance in wireless sensor networks in extending the battery lifetime. Accurately understanding the energy consumption characteristics of each sensor node is a critical step for the design of energy saving strategies. This paper develops a detailed probabilistic model based on Petri nets to evaluate the energy consumption of a wireless sensor node. The model factors critical components of a sensor node, including processors with emerging energy-saving features, wireless communication components, and an open or closed workload generator. Experimental results show that this model is more flexible and accurate than Markov models. The model provides a …

Several recent meetings have highlighted the growing interest in the biological, ecological, environmental, and other research communities in the development and deployment of large distributed systems for information collection, aggregation, analysis, simulation, predictive modeling and realtime analysis within their respective disciplines. Likewise, recent events have caused concern and raised interest in the need for similar systems in the context of homeland security. It seems apparent that a structured discussion of the needs for these systems could create opportunities for synergistic efficiencies between the various user communities. To date, however, no such discussions have been held among these differing user communities, …
