Valuing Equality In Irish Social Care, Niall Hanlon
Valuing Equality In Irish Social Care, Niall Hanlon
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
In this article the author critiques Irish social care by presenting an equality perspective on practice. An equality perspective involves developing emancipatory practices, that is, ways of helping that provide egalitarian solutions and outcomes. Although emancipatory values are often contrasted with traditional social care values, the author seeks a pragmatic and integrated approach to emancipatory practices rather than a restatement of traditional dichotomies. This information is presented in three parts. The opening section of this article outlines the methods which were used to collect data on the homeless population in …

The Search For The Holy Grail In Ireland: Social Care In Perspective, Niall Mcelwee
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
This article suggests that social care in Ireland is at a crossroads and that the Irish Association of Care Workers is now at a crucial stage of its twenty-six year existence. It acknowledges that a number of practitioners and academics have spent an enormous amount of time and energy attempting to convince their peers and the general public that social care deserves independent professional recognition, but with little real willingness to problematise the discipline of social care. I argue that social care practitioners and advocates will be forced to fully embrace change and become both more dynamic and proactive than …
