Responsible Design - An Experiment In Collaboration, Noel Brady, Emma Geoghegan May 2022

Responsible Design - An Experiment In Collaboration, Noel Brady, Emma Geoghegan

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

The imminent impact of the climate change has forced architecture schools to rethink their pedagogic structures. Using a scaffolded approach in our new MArch studio, we can demonstrate that the multiple narratives are required to deliver a responsive building capable of being durable, resilient and flexible. We argue that understanding these intertwined narratives is an essential method in dealing with the dynamic character of a building under construction, in use and reuse. The paper plots the structured narrative in a necessary linear fashion, where each phase employs specific methods of enquiry to deliver quantitative data that supports evidenced design decisions. …

Design For Climate - A Case Study From Architectural Education, Jennifer E. Boyer May 2022

Design For Climate - A Case Study From Architectural Education, Jennifer E. Boyer

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

This case study examines the impacts of a project that utilised a form of collaborative innovation, called co-creation, to embed sustainability into the five-year Bachelor of Architecture programme curriculum at the Technological University Dublin. This project’s co-creation process deployed design thinking, a term used to describe a human-centred creative problem solving process, to develop understanding, create shared purpose, and generate accountability across a wide range of the academic programme stakeholders to enact change. The project’s approach sponsored an opportunity for exchange and dialogue which enabled cultural change, using the unique and established pedagogy found within the programme’s core learning subject, …

The IMPACT project at TU Dublin has been informed in part by the outcomes of the Co-CREATE project in 2019-20. Co-CREATE was a Team Teaching Fellowship project to support and underpin the building of a quality curriculum framework for the new technological university. A number of IMPACT projects (for example, NorthStar) have continued the work started within the Co-CREATE project to make it sustainable and embedded within the university. We present findings from one element of the Co-CREATE project which has informed a range of initiatives in IMPACT. This is the review of literature and practice undertaken to underpin the …

Cultivating A Community Of Practice Model To Support And Encourage Innovative T&L Practices To Engage Practitioners And Enhance Student Success, Jen Harvey, Derek Dodd, Catherine Deegan, Olivia Freeman, Cormac H. Macmahon, Helen Williams

Communities of Practice (CoPs) are naturally forming groups of individuals who come together through a shared passion or goal and learn collectively by reciprocating knowledge and experiences. With competing demands of faculty, universities are increasingly challenged to provide professional development opportunities that actively encourage innovative pedagogical practices to enhance student success and quality of the learner experience. We report on four embryonic CoPs, based on collaborative processes, supporting institutional transformation and the formation of a new education model at Ireland’s first Technological University (TU). Juxtaposing a series of planned learning innovations with spontaneous interactions and actions of CoP members, we …

Technological Universities: An International Perspective On Instructional Support And Collaboration, Jason Fitzsimmons, David Nelson Jan 2019

Technological Universities: An International Perspective On Instructional Support And Collaboration, Jason Fitzsimmons, David Nelson

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

There exists a common endemic characteristic of collaboration among modern international technological universities beyond the marked diversity and localization of each one’s mission and vision. Technological universities prioritize collaborative work with students, industries, communities, and cultures. This openness to cooperative enterprise fosters numerous opportunities for innovation, exploration, and experimentation in teaching at technological universities. Their entrepreneurial ethos and emphasis on practice as fundamental to the student learning experience offer a more permeable learning environment between the formal classroom and the professional world. Institutions, such as Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) and Purdue Polytechnic Institute (PPI), are tackling this challenge through …
