Great importance is given to maintaining lentic ecosystems, threatened by human-induced consequences worldwide. The present study hypothesized to assess differences in species-environment relationships and ecological status of 15 lakes (saline water systems, high-altitude freshwater lakes, and other freshwater lakes) in the Konya Closed River Basin using phytoplankton indices throughout wet and dry periods. Results of canonical correspondence analysis separated saline and freshwater (high-altitude) habitats, which were characterized by different phytoplankton species. Total phosphorus (TP), electrical conductivity (EC), nickel-Ni, and altitude were the most influential environmental factors affecting phytoplankton dispersal in these ecosystems. Physicochemical parameters and phytoplankton seasonal variation were investigated between August 2010 and July 2011 in Dodurga Reservoir. A total of 35 phytoplankton taxa were identified. Phytoplankton samples collected from surface samples in late winter, spring, and early and mid-summer were found to be influenced by nitrate, dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, and phosphate. However, early winter and autumn assemblages of the samples were influenced by total hardness, silica, water transparency, conductivity, organic matter, and oxidation reduction potential. This study aimed to explain the seasonal and vertical distribution of phytoplankton in the pelagic zone of a deep alkaline lake that is characterized by low phytoplankton abundance. Phytoplankton and water samples were collected seasonally from 9 points and 7 depths between the surface and 20 m from December 2004 to September 2005. Planktolyngbya contorta was the dominant or subdominant species in all seasons and depths. The dominance of Gomphonema species was observed in December, but they were subdominant in September. The coast of Pakistan (North Arabian Sea) is under the influence of the seasonal cycle of monsoons, which may result in 2 periods of elevated phytoplankton productivity, one during the north-east monsoon (December-February) and the other during the south-west monsoon (May-September). In the present study, elevated primary productivity in the Miani Hor Lagoon and adjacent open sea off Pakistan was found during the south-west monsoon (May-September) and spring inter-monsoon (March-April). Seasonal Variations In Phytoplankton Communities In Zayandeh-Rood Dam Lake (Isfahan, Iran), Masoumeh Shams, Saeed Afsharzadeh, Tahi̇r Atici

Variations in the phytoplankton of Zayandeh-Rood Dam Lake were studied seasonally from September 2005 to August 2006 at 4 different stations. A total of 112 species and 53 genera belonging to 6 divisions were identified. The species belonging to Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, Euglenophyta, and Dinophyta were found frequently. Chrysophyta species were found in low numbers. Cyclotella meneghinina Kütz., a centric diatom, was the dominant species at all stations. The density of the phytoplankton was between 470 and 150,470 cells/cm^3. A series of studies were carried out to determine the succession and phytoplankton community of the Melen River in the Western Black Sea region of Turkey. The study was conducted at 6 stations at monthly intervals between May 2003 and April 2004. It was observed that the abundance and biovolume of phytoplankton were low in winter, though higher values were recorded in late spring and summer. Among the values noted, the spring peak was 534.38 × 10^5 ind. L^{-1} and 7384.8 mm^3 L^{-1} belonging to Peridinium sp. Seasonal Changes In Phytoplankton Community Structure In Relation To Physico-Chemical Factors In Bukan Dam Reservoir (Northwest Iran), Ali Mohsenpour Azari, Fereidun Mohebbi, Alireza Asem

This study examines the relationship between phytoplankton population and some important physicochemical variables in the Bukan Dam Reservoir. The sampling was performed monthly from 8 sampling sites from April 2008 to February 2009. Phytoplankton counts were made by inverted microscope. Totally, 55 phytoplankton taxa were identified and included Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Dinophyta, Cyanobacteria, Euglenophyta, Chrysophyta and Cryptophyta. Correlations between some important physicochemical factors and total phytoplankton number were calculated. Results indicated that phytoplankton total number positively correlated with NH_3 (R^2 = 0.845) and negatively correlated with Secchi disc depth (R^2 = -0.613).

The composition and abundance of phytoplankton and the corresponding environmental conditions were investigated during a mucilage event (October 2007-February 2008) in the Sea of Marmara. The mucilage producers Gonyaulax fragilis, Skeletonema costatum, and Cylindrotheca closterium were identified as abundant species. Thallassiosira rotula was also identified in large numbers. The maximum number of G. fragilis was observed at 83,600 cells L^{-1} in November 2007 during the first sampling occasion on the surface layer of İzmit Bay, and T. rotula was the most abundant diatom species, with 131,040 cells L^{-1} in the same period. In this study, weekly distributions of inorganic nutrients and phytoplankton cell volumes were investigated in relation to the hydrology of the Dardanelles. The data were collected between March 2001 and March 2002. NO^{-}_{2}+NO^{-}_{3}, PO_{4}^{-3}, and SiO_4 concentrations ranged between 0.050-6.887 µM, 0.051-1.152 µM, and 0.64-10.74 µM, respectively. During the study, the highest nutrient values were measured between late fall and mid-winter. Inorganic N:P and Si:P ratios in the surface water were lower due to high PO_{4}^{-3} concentrations. The composition of phytoplankton species thriving in Wadi Al-Arab Dam Reservoir, Jordan and their seasonal variation in relation to water ecology were studied between February 2001 and February 2002. A total of 75 species of phytoplankton were identified: Bacillariophyceae (diatoms) contributed with the highest number of taxa (39) followed by Chlorophyceae (23), Cyanophyceae (9), and Dinophyceae (4). Diatoms constituted 52% of the total phytoplankton flora of the reservoir and the most common species were Synedra ulna, Cymbella affinis, and Cyclotella meneghiniana with pennate and centric diatoms being the dominant species in May and October-November, respectively. The Phytoplankton Community (Except Bacillariophyceae) Of Lake Abant (Bolu, Turkey), Abuzer Çelekli̇, Olcay Obali, Okan Külköylüoğlu

A total of 162 phytoplankton species found monthly from 3 littoral and 2 vertical stations between June 2003 and June 2005 were identified from Lake Abant (Bolu, Turkey). Some species, such as Trachelomonas volvocina Ehrenberg, Cryptomonas ovata Ehrenberg, and Ceratium hirundinella (Müller) Dujardin showed frequent occurrence almost every month, but others had specific seasonality. Phytoplankton composition of this lake was dominated by Chlorophyta, accounting for about 58.6% of the species richness. Phytoplankton composition in Lake Abant included many new reported (> 30) taxa for the algal flora of Turkey.

The dinoflagellate species Gonyaulax pacifica Kofoid is reported for the first time from northeastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey; it has not previously been reported for any Turkish coastal waters. The phytoplanktonic algae were determined in samples taken from 7 different locations at the Sarıyar Dam Reservoir (SDR) from March 1996 to June 1997. The seasonal variation of phytoplankton and their chlorophyll a were determined and contents were discussed in relation to the physical and chemical parameters of the water. The divisions Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta were dominant; however, Cyclotella, Navicula, Nitzschia and Synedra of Bacillariophyta, and Chlorella and Scenedesmus of Chlorophyta were abundant. Phytoplankton and zooplankton densities in Hirfanlı Dam Lake were studied between July 1999 and June 2000. In addition, phytoplankton biomass was measured using chlorophyll a concentration. The density of Cladocera at the surface and that of Rotifera at the bottom were low in the summer months. For phytoplankton, Cyclostephanos dubius (Fricke) Round was dominant. The variation in the density of organisms did not follow a known pattern. Species composition, seasonal distribution and species density variations show that the lake was advanced mesotrophic. The silicoflagellate species Dictyocha antarctica Lohmann, Dictyocha crux Ehrenb. and the diatom species Nitzschia rectilonga Takano are reported for the first time from the coastal waters of the north-eastern Sea of Marmara (lat. 40º 45.80' N - 40º 58.00' N, long. 28º 36.00' E - 29º 13.60' E) and also from the coastal waters of Turkey. To determine the occurrence of dominant phytoplanktonic species causing red tides along the eastern Black Sea (Trabzon) coast of Turkey, multiple samples were collected periodically between 1991 and 2001. Red tide events were observed only during the periods between February and July. Six phytoplanktonic species causing 5 red tide events detected were Diplopsalis lenticula, Euglena acusformis, Eutreptia lanowii, Pyramimonas orientalis, Scrippsiella trochoidea, and Gymnodinium sanguineum. Numeric density of species during the red tide events ranged between 0.97 x 10^6 and 356 x 10^6 cells l^{-1}. Seasonal distributions of phytoplanktonic organisms in Lake Gölbaşı were investigated in samples collected from 2 stations between May, 2001, and April, 2002. At each station, monthly sampling was performed from the surface water. The flora consisted of 41 taxa belonging to Bacillariophyta (24), Chlorophyta (12), Pyrrophyta (2), Cyanophyta (2) and Chrysophyta (1). During the 1-year study period, the most dominant group was Chrysophyta followed by Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta and Pyrrophyta. The species composition and seasonal distribution of phytoplankton in Orduzu Dam Lake was studied for a year. Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) were most diverse, followed by green algae (Chlorophyta), blue-green algae (Cyanophyta), euglenoids (Euglenophyta) and dinoflagellates (Dinophyta). A total of 117 taxa were recorded and the phytoplankton of the lake contained a large number of detached benthic algae. Phytoplankton assemblages were dominated by diatoms in all the periods investigated and centric diatoms were the most abundant. A Taxonomic Study On The Phytoplankton Of Lake Uluabat (Bursa), Di̇dem Karacaoğlu, Şükran Dere, Nurhayat Dalkiran

The phytoplanktonic algal flora of Lake Uluabat was studied during July 1998- June 1999 by analysing samples taken each month from 5 sampling stations. Identified taxa (331) of the phytoplanktonic community are as follows: 152 Bacillariophyta, 89 Chlorophyta, 42 Cyanophyta, 31 Euglenophyta, 11 Dinophyta, 4 Cryptophyta and 2 Chrysophyta. Algal species which live in eutrophic water are dominant in the phytoplankton. Most of the species are characterised by their widespread presence, although it is also noted that some taxa are rarely found in Turkey.

Seasonal changes in the composition, abundance and biomass of zooplankton in the seas of the Mediterranean basin (the Mediterranean, Black and Azov seas) have been reviewed using our own data and data from the literature. In the deep-water central regions of the seas, the seasonal cycle of zooplankton abundance is characterised by one maximum occurring in spring or summer. In the coastal regions, two to three peaks (spring, summer and autumn) exist for the zooplankton abundance. This study examines the variations and relationship between phytoplanktonic organisms and chlorophyll a in Sultan Sazlığı marshes. During the sampling period, the density of phytoplankton and the value of chlorophyll a were examined, and it was found that the correlation between them was high. Given the variations between these two parameters in accordance with the seasons, the relationships with other studies are also discussed.

Three species of the genus Heterodinium Kofoid are reported for the first time in Turkish coastal waters, in the north-eastern Mediterranean. The identified species are Heterodinium mediocre Kofoid, H. angulatum Kofoid & Michener and H. inaequale Kofoid. The morphological characteristics of these three species are described and information about their distribution is given.

The dinoflagellate genus Histioneis F.R. von Stein 1883 and six species belonging to this genus are reported for the first time from the coastal waters of Turkey (north-eastern Mediterranean, lat. 36° 06' N - 36° 07' N, long. 33° 28' E - 33°30' E). Descriptions of the species Histioneis depressa J.Schiller, H. expansa L.Rampi, H. para Murray & Whitting, H. marchesonii L.Rampi, H. striata Kof. & J.R.Michener and H. elongata Kof. & J.R.Michener are given.

Seasonal changes in phytoplankton composition and phytoplankton abundance and physico-chemical factors affecting these parameters were investigated in this study. Quantitative and qualitative phytoplankton and nutrient analysis were carried out between 1998 and 1999 at 12 sampling stations located from inshore to offshore of Karataş, situated in the north-eastern Mediterranean. A total of 135 taxa were determined, belonging to four algae classes: Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceae and Dictyochophyceae. Bacillariophyceae appeared to be the dominant group in terms of total species number and cell numbers during the research period. The Treatment Efficiency Of Plankton In The İvedik Drinking Water Treatment Plant, Ankara, Ni̇lsun Demi̇r, Doğan Atay

The phyto-zooplankton composition and some physical and chemical properties of drinking water were investigated in the İvedik water treatment plant. The mean values of phytoplankton abundance were 641±92 and 438±55 ind/ml in the Kurtboğazı and Çamlıdere inlets, respectively. More than 50% of the phytoplankton belonging to the classes Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cryptophyceae and Dinophyceae were removed in the clarifiers. The treatment efficiency of phytoplankton ranged from 89 to 100% after the last chlorination. The mean values of zooplankton abundance were 93±23 and 59±18 ind/l in the Kurtboğazı and Çamlıdere inlets, respectively. The treatment efficiency of zooplankton varied between 97% and 100% …

Phytoplankton Species' Succession And Nutrients In The Southern Black Sea (Bay Of Sinop), Muhammet Türkoğlu, Tufan Koray

The succession, annual cycle and diversity of phytoplankton species and seasonal changes in nutrients in the southern Black Sea (around Sinop peninsula) were investigated between August 1995 and July 1996. One species of Cyanophyceae, 83 taxa of Dinophyceae, 1 species of Prymnesiophyceae, 5 taxa of Dictyochophyceae, 88 taxa of Bacillariophyceae and 1 species of Euglenophyceae were identified. A list of phytoplankton species together with annual variations was prepared. Changes in community structure, density and diversity are discussed in relation to the physico-chemical features of the water column.
