Ploidy Stability Of Oryza Sativa. L Cv Ir64 Transformed With The Moth Bean P5cs Gene With Significant Tolerance Against Drought And Salinity, Arumugam Mohana Priya, Subramanian Radhesh Krishnan, Manikandan Ramesh

Turkish Journal of Biology

Rice is one of the world's most important crops. Thus, it is necessary to improve it by genetic transformation. IR64 is a high-yielding and disease-resistant variety, but it is sensitive to abiotic stresses, mainly salinity and drought. Therefore, an efficient transformation system is a prerequisite for transforming this indica rice with a stress-tolerant gene, the potent osmolyte proline-coding P5CS gene of Vigna aconitifolia. Successful transgene integration was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern blot analysis. A Mendelian pattern of transgene inheritance was also observed in the progeny plants. The individual transformants expressed significant tolerance over wild-type control plants, …

Evaluation Of Drought Tolerance Of Winter Bread Wheat Genotypes Underdrip Irrigation And Rain-Fed Conditions, Jamala Mursalova, Zeynal Akparov, Javid Ojaghi, Mahammad Eldarov, Savaş Belen, Nurberdi Gummadov, Alexey Morgounov Jan 2015

Evaluation Of Drought Tolerance Of Winter Bread Wheat Genotypes Underdrip Irrigation And Rain-Fed Conditions, Jamala Mursalova, Zeynal Akparov, Javid Ojaghi, Mahammad Eldarov, Savaş Belen, Nurberdi Gummadov, Alexey Morgounov

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

To evaluate the genetic diversity in 48 winter bread wheat genotypes originating from different countries, an experiment based on randomized complete block design with 4 replications was carried out in drip irrigation and rain-fed conditions at the field station of the Transitional Zone Agricultural Research Institute, Eskişehir, Turkey in 2011 and 2012. Based on grain yield under rain-fed and irrigated conditions, drought tolerance indices, i.e. stress susceptibility index (SSI), stress tolerance index (STI), tolerance index (TOL), mean productivity (MP), and geometric mean productivity (GMP), were calculated to identify genotypes with better yield and drought tolerance. Analysis of variance indicated that …

Aquaporins As Targets For Stress Tolerance In Plants: Genomic Complexity And Perspectives, Wonkeun John Park, Benjamin Todd Campbell Jan 2015

Aquaporins As Targets For Stress Tolerance In Plants: Genomic Complexity And Perspectives, Wonkeun John Park, Benjamin Todd Campbell

Turkish Journal of Botany

As a multigene family, plant aquaporins function not only in water transport but also in transport of small elements that are important for vegetative and reproductive growth of plants. Increasing evidence exhibits the relevance of aquaporins to tolerance against abiotic and biotic stresses such as drought, nutrient deficiency, and herbivore attack. With the accumulation of crop genome sequencing, it is suggested that several aquaporin genes are conserved in subchromosomal locations as tandem duplicated members. In this review, we will discuss the compelling nature of aquaporins as multifunctional transport channels that are often encoded in clustered regions of genomes and relevant …

Field Assessment Of Camsrb2 Transgenic Lines In A Drought Stress Environment, Zamin Shaheed Siddiqui, Jung Il Cho, Dan-Be Park, Gang-Seob Lee, Tae-Hun Ryu, Huda Shahid, Muhammad Umar, Soo-Chul Park Jan 2015

Field Assessment Of Camsrb2 Transgenic Lines In A Drought Stress Environment, Zamin Shaheed Siddiqui, Jung Il Cho, Dan-Be Park, Gang-Seob Lee, Tae-Hun Ryu, Huda Shahid, Muhammad Umar, Soo-Chul Park

Turkish Journal of Botany

Two drought-tolerant transgenic rice lines, L-8 (single copy) and L-23 (two copy), expressing the Capsicum annuum methionine sulfoxide reductase B2 (CaMsrB2) gene were selected for stress tolerance phenotyping under drought stress conditions. The two transgenic lines were selected on the basis of laboratory experiments and for performing well against drought. Field assessment of CaMsrB2 transgenic lines L-23 and L-8 in a drought stress environment was conducted. For the assessments, small plots were prepared at the Department of Botany of the University of Karachi to test the physiological response of transgenic lines. Relative water content, quantum yield (Fv/Fm ratio), photochemical quenching …

Genetic Improvement Of Rice For Biotic And Abiotic Stress Tolerance, Mahmood Ur Rahman Ansari, Tayyaba Shaheen, Shazai Bukhari, Tayyab Husnain Jan 2015

Genetic Improvement Of Rice For Biotic And Abiotic Stress Tolerance, Mahmood Ur Rahman Ansari, Tayyaba Shaheen, Shazai Bukhari, Tayyab Husnain

Turkish Journal of Botany

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is among the most important food crops that provide a staple food for nearly half of the world's population. Rice crops are prone to various types of stresses, both biotic and abiotic. Biotic stresses include insect pests, fungus, bacteria, viruses, and herbicide toxicity. Among abiotic stresses, drought, cold, and salinity are also well studied in rice. Various genes have been identified, cloned, and characterized to combat these stresses and protect rice crops. The identified genes are successfully transformed into rice plants to produce transgenic plants. These transgenic rice plants are being evaluated under field conditions in …

Sustainable potato production practices are crucial for food security and social sustainability in the future since potato is a highly nutritious food and it is considered as one of the most promising crops to reduce human hunger and poverty in the world due to its high yield potential. However, being a temperate crop, potato is exposed to various environmental stresses, including extended periods of drought and heat. The majority of potato genomics, transcriptomics, and transgenics studies concentrate on the characterization of molecular mechanisms governing cold hardiness of tubers and response and tolerance mechanisms against diseases. Likewise, potato breeding studies focus …

Seed Priming With Cacl2 And Ridge Planting For Improved Drought Resistance In Maize, Muhammad Bismillah Khan, Mubshar Hussain, Abid Raza, Shahid Farooq, Khawar Jabran Jan 2015

Seed Priming With Cacl2 And Ridge Planting For Improved Drought Resistance In Maize, Muhammad Bismillah Khan, Mubshar Hussain, Abid Raza, Shahid Farooq, Khawar Jabran

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Drought-induced losses in crop output have forced the scientific community to develop efficient management strategies to cope with the adversities of drought stress. This field trial was done to assess the role of seed priming techniques and planting methods for improving drought resistance in Pakistani hybrid maize in 2011. Maize seeds were soaked in an aerated solution of CaCl2 (osmopriming; $\Psi$s -1.25 MPa) and distilled water (hydropriming), while untreated dry seeds were taken as controls. Primed and untreated seeds were sown on either ridges or a flat seedbed and were subjected to drought at vegetative and tasseling stages. Drought was …
