Determination Of Esterase Enzyme Polymorphism In House Fly (Musca Domestica L.) Populations In Turkey, Vatan Taşkin, Belgi̇n Göçmen Taşkin, Köksal Küçükakyüz, Meral Kence Jan 2011

Determination Of Esterase Enzyme Polymorphism In House Fly (Musca Domestica L.) Populations In Turkey, Vatan Taşkin, Belgi̇n Göçmen Taşkin, Köksal Küçükakyüz, Meral Kence

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The objective of this study was to determine esterase enzyme polymorphism in 16 natural Musca domestica L. populations from the Aegean and Mediterranean regions of Turkey by using the native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) technique. The high level of genetic variation among populations and species make esterase enzymes an important tool for analyzing genetic differentiation and evolutionary relationships in insects. In the present study, 22 \alpha-esterase bands were detected by using \alpha-naphthylacetate as a substrate. The frequencies of these bands were variable within and among populations. Neither regional nor population specific esterase bands were detected. The origin of speciation of …

Assessment Of Heavy Metal Concentrations In Water, Plankton, And Fish Of Lake Manzala, Egypt, Mohamed Bahnasawy, Abdel Aziz Khidr, Nadia Dheina Jan 2011

Assessment Of Heavy Metal Concentrations In Water, Plankton, And Fish Of Lake Manzala, Egypt, Mohamed Bahnasawy, Abdel Aziz Khidr, Nadia Dheina

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The levels of some heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) were determined in water, plankton, and fish (Liza aurata) collected from 5 sites in Lake Manzala. Metals in the water and fish exhibited a significant seasonal and regional variation, in which all metals attained their maximum value during summer, while the lowest levels were found during winter. The concentration of different metals in water, plankton, and fish tissues followed the same order: Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd. The mean concentrations of metals in the water were as follow: Cu, 0.055; Zn, 0.311; Cd, 0.020; and Pb, 0.022 mg/L. The Cd …

Helminth Parasites Of The Balkan Green Lizard, Lacerta Trilineata Bedriaga 1886, From Bursa, Turkey, Hi̇kmet Sami̇ Yildirimhan, Charles Robert Bursey, Fayik Naci̇ Altunel Jan 2011

Helminth Parasites Of The Balkan Green Lizard, Lacerta Trilineata Bedriaga 1886, From Bursa, Turkey, Hi̇kmet Sami̇ Yildirimhan, Charles Robert Bursey, Fayik Naci̇ Altunel

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Thirty-eight Balkan green lizards, Lacerta trilineata, from Turkey were examined for helminths. Three species of Digenea, Plagiorchis elegans, Pleurogenoides medians, Brachylaemus sp. (metacercaria); 2 species of Cestoda, Oochoristica tuberculata and Mesocestoides sp. (tetrathyridium); and 6 species of Nematoda, Abbreviata abbreviata, Ascarops strongylina (larva in cysts), Falcaustra armenica, Oswaldocruzia filiformis, Skrjabinelazia hoffmanni, Skrjabinodon medinae, were found. Lacerta trilineata represents a new host record for each of the parasite species; Plagiorchis elegans, Brachylaemus sp., Oochoristica tuberculata, Mesocestoides sp., Abbreviata abbreviata, Ascarops strongylina (larva), Falcaustra armenica Skrjabinelazia hoffmanni, and Skrjabinodon medinae are reported from Turkey for the first time.

Detection Of Prokaryotic Microbial Communities Of Çamaltı Saltern, Turkey, By Fluorescein In Situ Hybridization And Real-Time Pcr, Mehmet Burçi̇n Mutlu, Kiymet Güven Jan 2011

Detection Of Prokaryotic Microbial Communities Of Çamaltı Saltern, Turkey, By Fluorescein In Situ Hybridization And Real-Time Pcr, Mehmet Burçi̇n Mutlu, Kiymet Güven

Turkish Journal of Biology

Knowledge of the functions, interactions, and diversity of extremely halophilic microorganisms mostly comes from the results of studies performed in different salterns throughout the world. As model habitats, salterns allow the comparison of different techniques used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of halophilic communities in these hypersaline environments. Çamaltı Saltern is the biggest coastal solar saltern located on the Aegean coast of Turkey, and it produces most of the salt consumed in the country. In the present study, detection of prokaryotic communities of the Çamaltı Saltern was performed using 2 culture-independent methods. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and fluorescein in …

A Comparative Assessment Of Fruit Formation In Some Orchid Species From The Southern Caucasus Region, Houshang Nosrati, Roghieh Hajiboland, Ahmad Razban-Haghighi, Maryam Nikniazi Jan 2011

A Comparative Assessment Of Fruit Formation In Some Orchid Species From The Southern Caucasus Region, Houshang Nosrati, Roghieh Hajiboland, Ahmad Razban-Haghighi, Maryam Nikniazi

Turkish Journal of Botany

The distribution and population size of 5 orchid species (Cephalanthera longifolia, Orchis simia, Platanthera bifolia, Dactylorhiza romana, and Ophrys scolopax) were studied in the southern Caucasus based on the individual numbers in a given area. The fruit set was recorded for the latter 3 species and compared in natural and control groups (pollinators prevented) for D. romana and O. scolopax. We compared the obtained fruit set values with those reported from other regions. The distributions of the 5 species were completely fragmented and the population sizes were extremely small. This is the first report of O. scolopax from the region, …

Significance Of Absorption Spectra For The Chemotaxonomic Characterization Of Pigmented Bacteria, Nuretti̇n Şahi̇n Jan 2011

Significance Of Absorption Spectra For The Chemotaxonomic Characterization Of Pigmented Bacteria, Nuretti̇n Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Biology

A method for characterizing pigmented bacteria based on the numerical analysis of their carotenoid absorption spectra was examined. To achieve this, some non-phototrophic pigmented bacteria that were isolated from various environments and closely related types of species were used. Bacterial carotenoid pigments were extracted with an acetone:methanol (7:2) mixture and the absorption spectra were determined. Data were normalized, and their first derivatives were analyzed using Ward clustering algorithms. Based on the spectral data, isolates were separated into 7 groups. Characterization based on derivative pigment spectral data showed good agreement statistically with biochemical characterization results. The Mantel test indicated that the …
