Hidden Spoor, Ruan Xiaoxu, And His Treatise On Reclusion, Alan Berkowitz

In early medieval China great attention was paid to compiling accounts of men in reclusion, yet the prefaces to these compilations often contain only vague or stale reasoning concerning the nature of reclusion itself. A preface by Shen Yue (441-513) is a notable exception: Shen differentiated between "disengagement" and "reclusion." A slightly later contemporary of Shen, Ruan Xiaoxu (479-536), took issue with him in a unique and tightly constructed disquisition on what Ruan saw as a basic dichotomy in the Way of man: "the root" and "overt traces." Ruan's overlooked treatise is examined here, as are some relevant facets of …

Scaling Behavior Of Atomic Trajectories In Confined Fluids, Amy Lisa Graves, B. J. Berne

We study the dependence of D, a quantity that has previously been associated with the fractal dimension of an atomic trajectory, on the scale on which it is measured. Single-particle and relative trajectories are generated by molecular-dynamics simulations of Lennard-Jones atoms permanently trapped in a spherical pore. Transient trapping is studied with a generalized Langevin model of dynamics. Confinement of trajectories allows D to exceed 2; in the case of permanent trapping, D diverges.

Reaction of copper(II) with water soluble porphyrins (H₂porph) in the presence of ethylenediamine shows an unusual and so far unreported kinetic phenomenon that can be explained in terms of supramolecular assembly formation apparently involving all solute species as confirmed via light scattering and conductivity measurements.

Nonadiabatic Electronic Interactions In The Ion-Pair States Of Nelcl, Thomas Alex Stephenson, Y. Hong, M. I. Lester
Nonadiabatic Electronic Interactions In The Ion-Pair States Of Nelcl, Thomas Alex Stephenson, Y. Hong, M. I. Lester
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
Nonadiabatic interactions in the NeIC1 van der Waals complex have been explored in the lowest energy triad of IC1 ion-pair states (approximately 39 000 cm-1). Dispersed fluorescence measurements reveal emission characteristic of multiple ion-pair electronic states, with the relative contributions from the E(O+ ), beta(1), and D'(2) states changing with the initial IC1 vibrational excitation (v(IC1)). Emission directly from NeIC1 (v(IC1) = O) complexes indicates that the initially prepared NeIC1 levels have mixed electronic character and that the IC1 electronic parentage changes with the initial van der Waals vibrational level selected. NeIC1 complexes prepared with 1-4 quanta of IC1 stretch …
Advice For Undergraduates On Special Aspects Of Writing Mathematics, Stephen B. Maurer
Advice For Undergraduates On Special Aspects Of Writing Mathematics, Stephen B. Maurer
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
There are several guides to good mathematical writing for professionals, but few for undergraduates. Yet undergraduates who write mathematics papers need special guidance. For instance, professionals may need help writing clear definitions, but at least they know why explicit definitions are needed and know the basic format. In general, mathematics has many special formats that are not mere technical conventions but instead serve important purposes. Often students are not conscious of these conventions, and they rarely know their purposes. This paper contains a guide for students written in light of these observations.

The Population Factor: China's Family Planning Policy In The 1990s, Tyrene White
Political Science Faculty Works
Realizing the extent of runaway population growth in China and the associated threat to the realization of overall domestic economic development, China's leadership of 1980 set the goal of holding the country's population within 1.2 billion by the year 2000. With few exceptions, the government called for all couples to have only 1 child. By 1990, different localities and regions had implemented their own policies. The state still held all urban couples with a single female child could have a 2nd child after a 5 year hiatus; a 3rd child was forbidden regardless of the sex of the 2nd child. …
